Gears of War: E-Day supports cross-platform multiplayer between its supported Xbox and PC versions, including the Steam release. The Steam listing describes two- to four-player online co-op and competitive multiplayer for up to eight players across supported platforms.
Cross-progression depends on where you play and how your accounts are connected. Xbox Play Anywhere provides shared progression between Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Store PC version. Steam offers roaming saves through optional account linking, and an Xbox account is required on Steam when you want to send a cross-platform squad invite.

What cross-play supports in E-Day
Cross-play lets players using different supported platforms join the same multiplayer session. For Gears of War: E-Day, the confirmed platform group is Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC, and Steam. The official Steam listing labels the game “Cross-Platform Multiplayer” and describes online co-op for two to four players, plus competitive multiplayer for as many as eight players across supported platforms.
That means an Xbox Series X|S player can play with a PC player using either the Microsoft Store or Steam version, provided the players use the game’s supported cross-platform invitation and account features. Cross-play is not a blanket promise for every console ecosystem: the official platform information identifies Xbox Series X|S and PC versions, and does not document a PlayStation version for E-Day.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Yes, with supported PC versions | Uses the Xbox platform account environment | Shared progression with Microsoft Store PC through Xbox Play Anywhere | Included in Game Pass Ultimate at launch, according to the official Xbox product page |
| Microsoft Store PC | Yes, with Xbox Series X|S and supported PC versions | Uses the Microsoft account environment associated with the Xbox PC version | Shared progression with Xbox Series X|S through Xbox Play Anywhere | Included in PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate at launch, according to the official Xbox product page |
| Steam | Yes, with supported Xbox and PC versions | An Xbox/Microsoft account is not required merely to play on Steam; linking one is required to send a cross-platform squad invite | Optional account linking enables roaming saves; the official wording does not guarantee identical transfer behavior for every save type between every storefront | The cited Xbox product-page statement covers Xbox and Microsoft Store PC Game Pass availability; it does not establish a Steam subscription entitlement |
The table separates four issues that are often incorrectly treated as one: joining a session, signing in, carrying progress, and obtaining the game through a subscription. A version can support cross-play without offering the same entitlement or save behavior as another version.
Can an Xbox player play with someone on Steam?
Yes. Xbox Series X|S and Steam are both within the supported Xbox-and-PC platform group described for E-Day. The practical difference is who sends the invitation and whether that person has linked an Xbox account on Steam.
If the Steam player is sending the cross-platform invite
- Install and start the Steam version of E-Day.
- When the game offers account-linking options, connect the Steam play session to an Xbox account. The official FAQ says this link is needed to send a cross-platform squad invite.
- Use the game’s squad or friend-invitation tools to invite the Xbox player.
- Have the Xbox player accept the invitation and join the same online session.
Steam play itself does not require an Xbox or Microsoft account. The account link becomes important for cross-platform social functions: the official FAQ specifically calls out sending a cross-platform squad invite, while the Steam store description also associates optional linking with connecting with friends.
If the Xbox player is organizing the squad
The documented requirement is directed at the Steam player who wants to send the cross-platform invitation. The Steam player should still link an Xbox account if the game requests it for friend connections, invitations, or save roaming. Linking before trying to assemble the squad avoids confusing an account requirement with a multiplayer incompatibility.

How many people can play together?
The Steam listing describes online co-op for two to four players. That is the relevant limit for a co-op squad, regardless of whether the members are on Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC, or Steam, as long as each version is supported and the players can invite one another.
The same listing describes competitive multiplayer for up to eight players across supported platforms. Co-op and competitive capacity are different limits, so a four-player co-op group should not be interpreted as an eight-player campaign party, and the eight-player competitive figure should not be used to describe co-op.
What cross-progression means in E-Day
Cross-progression means that account-linked progress can appear when you move between supported versions. It is separate from cross-play: cross-play answers whether two people can join one session, while cross-progression answers whether your own progress follows you to another storefront or device.

Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC: Xbox Play Anywhere
The official Xbox product page states that Xbox Play Anywhere lets you play across Xbox Series X|S and PC with shared progression. For players using those two versions, this is the clearest documented progression guarantee: progress made on the Xbox console version can be shared with the Microsoft Store PC version, and progress made on the Microsoft Store PC version can be shared back to Xbox Series X|S.
Play Anywhere should not be generalized to every PC storefront. The statement names Xbox Series X|S and PC in the Xbox ecosystem; it does not say that a Steam installation automatically participates in the same Play Anywhere entitlement or save system.
Steam: roaming saves through optional linking
Steam’s store description says that optional account linking lets players carry progress with roaming saves, connect with friends, and send cross-platform invites. This establishes a way for linked progress to roam with the account, but it is more qualified than the explicit Xbox Play Anywhere statement.
Do not treat “roaming saves” as a promise that every campaign, profile, unlock, or mode-specific record will transfer identically between Steam and every Xbox storefront. The available wording confirms the feature and its account-linking basis, not a detailed save-by-save compatibility matrix.

Does Steam require an Xbox or Microsoft account?
No, not simply to play E-Day on Steam. The official Gears of War FAQ says an Xbox/Microsoft account is not required for Steam play. It then adds an important exception: if you want to send a cross-platform squad invite, you need to link an Xbox account.
That creates three sensible choices for a Steam player:
- Steam-only play: You can start the game without an Xbox account under the FAQ’s stated rule.
- Cross-platform invitations: Link an Xbox account before trying to send a squad invite to an Xbox or other supported PC player.
- Roaming saves and friend connections: Use the optional account link described by Steam when you want those account-based features.
The link is about identity and connected features, not a replacement for owning or accessing the Steam version. Keep the same linked account when returning to the game so the service can associate your roaming progress and friends with the intended profile.

Cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-buy are different
These terms describe separate capabilities:
- Cross-play: Different supported platforms can join the same multiplayer match or squad.
- Cross-progression: Your progress or saves can follow an account between supported versions.
- Cross-buy: One purchase grants access to more than one storefront or platform version.
E-Day’s official information confirms cross-play across supported Xbox and PC platforms. It explicitly confirms shared progression between Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC through Xbox Play Anywhere, and it describes Steam roaming saves with optional linking. Those statements should not be expanded into a general cross-buy promise. The available platform descriptions do not establish that a Steam purchase grants the Xbox version, that an Xbox purchase grants Steam, or that every edition shares one entitlement.

Game Pass and buying decisions
The official Xbox product page says E-Day is included in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at launch. That gives Xbox Series X|S and PC Game Pass subscribers a way to access the game through the listed Xbox services when the launch entitlement applies.
Game Pass access and cross-play are separate questions. A player’s ability to join a friend depends on using a supported version and the applicable multiplayer and account systems; the fact that one player uses a subscription does not by itself change the cross-play rules. Likewise, the cited Game Pass statement does not establish a Steam subscription entitlement or remove the need for Steam account linking when a Steam player sends a cross-platform invitation.
What to check before starting a cross-platform session
- Platform: Confirm that each player is using Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC, or Steam. The confirmed platform list does not include PlayStation.
- Game version: Make sure everyone has E-Day installed through a supported storefront rather than assuming that any PC copy uses the same account service.
- Steam account link: If the Steam player will send the cross-platform squad invitation, link an Xbox account first.
- Friend connection: Use the game’s own friend and squad tools, since the Steam description ties account linking to connecting with friends and sending invitations.
- Progression expectation: For the strongest documented shared-progression path, use Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC under Xbox Play Anywhere. Treat Steam saves as account-linked roaming saves rather than assuming universal storefront transfer.
- Subscription entitlement: If using Game Pass, verify that the account is covered by Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass as applicable to the platform.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Steam player cannot send an invite
Check the Xbox-account link first. Steam play does not require that account, but the official FAQ makes the link a condition for sending a cross-platform squad invite. After linking, restart the social or squad flow and confirm that the intended account remains connected.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The game works, but a friend cannot be found
Verify that both players are using one of the three documented platform families and are searching through the game’s cross-platform friend or squad tools. Account linking is described as the mechanism for connecting with friends on Steam, so an unlinked Steam profile may not expose the required cross-platform options.
Progress is missing after changing versions
First identify the storefront transition. Xbox Series X|S to Microsoft Store PC, or the reverse, is the path explicitly covered by Xbox Play Anywhere shared progression. A Steam transition depends on the optional account link and roaming-save feature. Check that the same account is linked before treating the save as incompatible, and do not assume that a Steam save and a Microsoft Store save are interchangeable merely because both are PC versions.
A player expects PlayStation cross-play
The official platform information names Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC, and Steam. It does not document PlayStation support for E-Day, so a PlayStation cross-play assumption is not supported by the current platform listing.
Bottom line for each common question
- Does E-Day have cross-play? Yes, across the supported Xbox and PC versions: Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC, and Steam.
- Can Xbox play with Steam? Yes. The Steam player should link an Xbox account when sending a cross-platform squad invitation.
- Does E-Day have cross-progression? Yes, with the clearest guarantee between Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC through Xbox Play Anywhere. Steam supports roaming saves through optional account linking, with more limited wording about cross-store save behavior.
- Is an Xbox account required on Steam? No for Steam play itself; yes when the Steam player wants to send a cross-platform squad invite.
