An optional third-party mod uses DXVK to translate the game’s Direct3D calls to Vulkan. It may improve performance or reduce stuttering on some systems, but it can also make performance worse.
What the God of War Vulkan mod does
The God of War-specific mod is a DXVK wrapper: DXVK translates Direct3D 8–11 calls into Vulkan rather than adding an official native Vulkan mode. The game’s DirectX 11 identification is supported by Intel driver notes, while the DXVK project describes its general translation function in its documentation. The DirectX 11 identification is based on Intel release notes hosted as a third-party PDF mirror, so treat that attribution with moderate confidence: Intel driver notes.
Should you install it?
Only if you want to experiment with an alternative graphics translation path and are prepared to compare it with the game’s normal rendering. The mod author says DXVK may help performance or reduce stuttering on some hardware, but also warns that performance can drop and does not guarantee a benefit for every configuration. The author characterizes it as usually more helpful on AMD GPUs than Nvidia GPUs; that is the author’s assessment, not a controlled benchmark.
No named, attributable God of War-specific benchmark establishes a typical frame-rate gain. Compare the two paths on your own system using frame rate, frame-time consistency, stability, stutter once shader compilation is complete, and how easily you can restore the original files.

What to expect after installation
- First launch: The mod listing warns that shader compilation can cause stutter at first, which may subside afterward.
- Variable results: Performance can improve, remain similar, or worsen depending on the hardware and configuration.
- Third-party status: This is a community mod, not an official PC feature documented or endorsed on Santa Monica Studio’s PC-versus-PS4 page.
Installation and version notes
The mod listing describes manual installation by placing two DLL files and one configuration file beside the root game executable, GoW.exe. It also describes an installation wizard for Vortex. Follow the current instructions on the mod listing rather than relying on an old guide, and keep a way to restore the original game files: the wrapper intercepts graphics DLL behavior.
The listing reports version 0.1.2, last updated August 31, 2025, with DXVK 2.7 using the dxvk-gplasync library. Those are details reported by the listing on that date, not a guarantee that the files will work with every current driver or game build. Check the listing’s current version and instructions before installing.
