Leave it enabled if your games remain stable and testing shows equal or better frame pacing, latency, or frame-generation behavior. Disable it if it causes crashes, driver timeouts, stutter, video-playback issues, VR problems, or worse 1% lows.
What HAGS changes
Normally, Windows and the CPU-side graphics stack handle much of the work involved in scheduling GPU tasks. HAGS moves more of that scheduling responsibility to a hardware-based GPU scheduler.

Microsoft designed HAGS to reduce submission overhead and potentially shorten the path between an application’s work and the GPU. That is an architectural goal, not a promise that every game will run faster. HAGS does not add shader cores, increase memory bandwidth, raise GPU clocks, or make the Radeon itself more powerful.

Does HAGS work with AMD Radeon?
Yes, compatible AMD Radeon systems can support HAGS. The feature is part of Windows’ graphics stack, not an NVIDIA-only technology. Support depends on the Radeon generation, Windows version and build, AMD driver, and the WDDM support exposed by that driver.
AMD’s Adrenalin 24.1.1 release notes, for example, documented expanded HAGS support for Radeon RX 7600-series GPUs on Windows 11 version 22H2 and newer. That dated example should not be treated as a universal compatibility list: RX 6000, RX 7000, RX 9000, integrated Radeon graphics, laptop GPUs, and OEM driver packages can behave differently. Check the requirements for your exact system.
If the option is missing, do not force it through the registry as a first step. Check your Windows version, confirm that Windows is using the intended Radeon GPU, update or reinstall the AMD driver, and consider whether a laptop manufacturer’s driver is required. Microsoft says HAGS requires compatible hardware and a WDDM 2.7-or-newer driver exposing support. AMD also notes that Adrenalin screens and controls vary by system configuration, and laptop users may need an OEM-provided driver.
Can HAGS increase FPS on AMD?
Sometimes, but there is no dependable universal gain. HAGS has more opportunity to matter in a CPU-limited game, particularly at high refresh rates, because scheduling overhead may be more relevant. In a heavily GPU-bound game, moving scheduling work is unlikely to create a large rendering-performance increase.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
Possible outcomes include:
- No measurable FPS change.
- A small increase or decrease in average FPS.
- Better or worse 1% and 0.1% lows.
- Different frame-time behavior without a significant average-FPS change.
- Lower or higher input latency.
- New stutter, driver timeouts, or crashes.
Average FPS alone is not enough. Compare frame-time graphs, 1% lows, GPU utilization, CPU limitation, and latency when possible. A setting that produces one extra frame per second but introduces uneven frame delivery is not necessarily the better setting.
Is HAGS necessary for AMD AFMF or FSR frame generation?
No universal HAGS requirement is established by AMD’s published requirements. AMD’s current AFMF documentation lists Windows 10 or Windows 11, supported Radeon hardware, Adrenalin 25.3.1 or newer, supported APIs, and VSync disabled in both the game and driver. It does not list HAGS as a general prerequisite.
AMD’s AFMF requirements also distinguish hardware and display modes: RX 7000-series and newer cards support borderless full-screen use, while RX 6000-series support is described for exclusive full-screen mode. AMD recommends a FreeSync display. These are AFMF conditions, not HAGS conditions.

HAGS may affect the behavior of a particular frame-generation implementation, especially because generated frames change queueing and presentation behavior. But the correct conclusion is: follow the game or AMD documentation, and test HAGS independently.
HAGS compared with other graphics settings
| Setting | What it does | How it relates to HAGS |
|---|---|---|
| HAGS | Moves more GPU scheduling work to a hardware scheduler. | Windows-level scheduling option. |
| Radeon Anti-Lag | Attempts to reduce the delay between CPU work and rendered frames. | AMD latency feature; it does not replace HAGS. |
| AFMF | AMD driver-level frame generation. | Separate feature with its own hardware, driver, API, display-mode, and VSync requirements. |
| FSR frame generation | Game-integrated frame generation from AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution. | Requirements vary by game implementation; HAGS is not a blanket requirement. |
| Optimizations for windowed games | Changes presentation for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 windowed or borderless games in Windows 11. | Separate from HAGS and can independently affect latency or frame pacing. |
| VSync and VRR | Control synchronization between rendered frames and the display. | Display-presentation settings, not GPU scheduling. |
AMD describes Radeon Anti-Lag as a supported driver and game latency feature that can be enabled through profiles or HYPR-RX. Microsoft documents Optimizations for windowed games separately. Do not change these settings at the same time when diagnosing a problem.
When AMD users should test HAGS on
- You have a supported Radeon GPU, current Windows installation, and compatible driver.
- Your important games are CPU-limited or run at high refresh rates.
- You are investigating frame pacing or latency in a specific game.
- A game or frame-generation developer specifically recommends it.
- You have a stable system suitable for controlled A/B testing.
For a stable gaming PC with satisfactory performance, there is no urgent reason to change HAGS simply because it is available. Treat it as a configuration variable, not an automatic upgrade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen to test HAGS off
Disable or compare HAGS off when problems begin after enabling it or after a Windows or driver update. Symptoms worth testing include driver timeouts, game crashes, black screens, display resets, microstutter, worse frame-time consistency, video playback stutter across multiple displays, or VR instability.

AMD has documented disabling HAGS as a temporary workaround for certain driver-timeout and application-crash cases in its Adrenalin 24.20.11.01 release notes. That workaround is specific to the documented situations and does not prove that HAGS is generally broken on AMD. Driver version and game context matter; review the release notes for your exact driver. AMD’s later release notes continue to list game-specific crashes, timeouts, corruption, and frame-generation issues across Radeon products.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to change and test HAGS safely
Change the setting
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Graphics.
- Open Default graphics settings.
- Toggle Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
- Restart Windows before judging the result.
Labels and availability can vary by Windows build, edition, OEM configuration, and driver. If the control is absent, investigate compatibility rather than immediately forcing it.
Run a controlled A/B test
- Record the current HAGS state.
- Keep the same Windows build, Radeon driver, game version, resolution, graphics settings, frame cap, display mode, and background applications.
- Use the same repeatable benchmark or game section and run it at least three times.
- Discard the first run if it includes one-time shader compilation or asset caching.
- Record average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time graphs, GPU utilization, and latency where possible.
- Change only HAGS, restart, and repeat the runs with the opposite setting.
- Keep the state that offers the best combination of stability, smooth frame delivery, and responsiveness.
Subjective smoothness matters, but it should be checked against repeatable frame-time data. Test native rendering and frame generation separately; a result from AFMF or FSR frame generation should not automatically be generalized to ordinary rendering.
Troubleshooting crashes, stutter, or changed frame generation
- Return to Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Default graphics settings.
- Disable HAGS and restart Windows.
- Retest the same game with Anti-Lag, AFMF, VSync, frame caps, overlays, and windowed-game optimization unchanged.
- Check AMD’s release notes for the installed driver and the affected game.
- If the issue persists, perform a clean AMD driver installation. On a laptop, try the manufacturer’s supported driver.
- Remove unstable GPU overclocks or undervolts and check temperatures, power behavior, and utilization.
If disabling HAGS changes or breaks frame generation, verify the GPU generation, AMD Software version, API, full-screen mode, VSync state, and whether the game uses AFMF or integrated FSR. Do not infer from that result that HAGS is universally required; it may indicate a game-, driver-, or presentation-specific interaction.
Higher-impact checks before changing HAGS
HAGS is rarely the first performance fix to try. Confirm the correct AMD or OEM driver, update the game, allow shader compilation to finish, use an appropriate frame cap, configure FreeSync or other VRR correctly, check thermal throttling and GPU utilization, remove unstable tuning, and compare borderless with exclusive full-screen where supported. Test Radeon Anti-Lag separately, and use AFMF only when the base frame rate and the game’s requirements are appropriate.
