No. HDR itself generally does not add noticeable input lag to a PS5. HDR is a video-output format, and testing from RTINGS found that HDR rarely changed monitor input-lag results. When controls feel slower after HDR is enabled, the more likely cause is a television or monitor switching to a different picture preset, enabling extra processing, or leaving its low-latency mode. HDR, game stutter and online network lag are separate problems, so diagnose them separately.

What the PS5 lag complaint can actually mean

“Lag” describes several different symptoms. Input lag is the delay between a controller action and the first visible change on screen. RTINGS defines monitor input lag as the time required for a display to receive a signal and show the image. Pixel response time is different: it is how long the individual pixels take to transition between colors. A slow response can create blur or ghosting even when the display starts showing the frame promptly.

Game stutter is uneven frame delivery from the game or console. Network lag is delay caused by an online connection. Neither is established by the HDR evidence discussed here. A game can stutter with HDR disabled, and an online match can feel delayed while the local display has excellent input latency.

  • Input lag: a controller action appears late on the screen.
  • Pixel response: moving objects leave trails or look smeared.
  • Game stutter: motion arrives in uneven jumps because frames are not delivered consistently.
  • Network lag: online actions are delayed by connection conditions or the game server.

Use the first symptom as your starting point. HDR troubleshooting can address display latency, but it cannot repair an unstable internet connection or a game that is failing to maintain its frame rate.

How HDR is configured on PS5

On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The HDR menu controls when the PS5 sends HDR output. Sony also provides Adjust HDR in the same Video Output area so you can calibrate the console’s HDR image for the connected screen.

PS5 HDR option What it does What it means for testing
Always On Converts even unsupported games and apps to HDR output. SDR and HDR comparisons are not equivalent if this option is enabled, because unsupported content is converted.
On When Supported Uses HDR when the game or app supports it and leaves unsupported content in SDR. Provides a cleaner comparison for supported and unsupported titles.
Adjust HDR Provides PS5 HDR adjustment screens for the connected display. Changing calibration alters brightness and tone mapping, not a guaranteed latency characteristic.

HDR image quality depends on the complete home-entertainment setup. The television or monitor, HDMI path and its current picture mode all matter. A PS5 setting alone cannot guarantee a particular latency result on every display.

Why HDR can feel slower even when HDR is not the cause

HDR can select a different picture preset

Many displays store separate SDR and HDR picture settings. Switching to HDR can therefore move the screen out of the low-latency configuration you use for SDR. The HDR preset might enable motion interpolation, noise reduction, sharpening, dynamic contrast or other processing. Each model handles these controls differently, so the same console can feel immediate in SDR and delayed in HDR without HDR encoding itself adding the delay.

Game Mode may not remain active

Game Mode, Game content type or another documented low-latency mode tells the display to reduce processing. Sony’s general HDR gaming guidance recommends the appropriate HDMI input and the television’s low-latency Game setting. The exact label and menu path depend on the display manufacturer. Activate the mode for the HDR picture preset, not only for SDR.

Pixel response can change the impression of speed

Input lag and pixel response are separate measurements, but a slow transition can make aiming or camera movement look less crisp. That visual smear is often interpreted as control delay. If the controller responds on time but moving objects trail, investigate response behavior and picture processing rather than assuming HDR is responsible.

What testing says about HDR and input lag

RTINGS reports that HDR and VRR rarely changed input lag in its monitor testing. That is useful evidence against the broad claim that HDR inherently adds delay. It is not a numeric, PS5-specific result, and monitors generally use less processing than televisions. The finding does not prove that every TV, game or HDR implementation behaves identically.

  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.

RTINGS also recommends the Game content type for the lowest input lag on its tested Sony BRAVIA 7 setup. It identifies an enhanced-format configuration on HDMI 3 or HDMI 4 for recent consoles. Treat that as a model example, not a universal instruction: another display may use different ports, labels or requirements.

Check what the PS5 and display are actually outputting

Before changing several settings at once, record the signal the console is sending. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, inspect the HDR selection and Adjust HDR. Then open the options for Current Video Output Signal and Information for the Connected HDMI Device. These screens help confirm the active resolution, refresh-rate capabilities and whether the connected device reports HDR, VRR and other supported features.

This check prevents a common misdiagnosis: a display may be receiving a different refresh rate or feature combination after HDR is enabled. If the signal changed, compare the complete configurations rather than attributing the difference to HDR alone.

Step-by-step fix when HDR feels laggy

  1. Enable the display’s low-latency mode. On the TV or monitor, choose Game Mode, Game content type or the manufacturer’s documented low-latency setting. Confirm that the HDR picture preset has the mode enabled; HDR and SDR often save settings separately.
  2. Use the correct HDMI input. Select the port specified for console gaming or enhanced format by your display documentation. A port intended for high-bandwidth features may be required for 4K/120Hz, VRR or HDR.
  3. Review PS5 HDR settings. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Note whether HDR is set to Always On or On When Supported, and open Adjust HDR if calibration is needed.
  4. Read the output and device information. Check Current Video Output Signal and Information for the Connected HDMI Device. Verify that the resolution and refresh rate match your intended test and that the display reports the HDR, VRR and other capabilities you expect.
  5. Check 120Hz, VRR and ALLM separately. Enable only features supported by both the PS5 game and the display. Sony explains that ALLM can switch a compatible TV into low-latency mode while gaming. Sony also notes that VRR output can trigger low-latency mode even when ALLM is set to Off.
  6. Compare one identical scene in SDR and HDR. Keep the game, resolution, refresh rate, display mode and other variables unchanged. Switch only the HDR condition. If the feeling changes, inspect the HDR preset’s processing controls before concluding that HDR output is the cause.
  7. Remove intermediate equipment temporarily. Connect the PS5 directly to the display to rule out an AV receiver, switch or other intermediary. Restore the normal chain only after the direct connection behaves correctly.
  8. Check the cable, port and firmware. For unstable high-resolution or 4K/120Hz output, Sony lists the HDMI cable, supported TV input and current TV firmware among the checks. Replace or update one item at a time so you know which change fixed the problem.

How 120Hz, VRR and ALLM relate to HDR

These features are related to gaming display behavior but are not interchangeable explanations for delay.

Feature Purpose Latency diagnostic
HDR Expands the supported brightness and color signal delivered to the display. Check whether HDR activates a different picture preset or processing chain.
VRR Coordinates display refresh timing with compatible game output. Results vary by TV and game; verify support and the reported output.
ALLM Automatically switches a compatible TV to a low-latency mode while gaming. Confirm the TV changes to its Game or low-latency mode as expected.
120Hz output Allows supported games and displays to use a higher refresh rate. Requires a compatible game, display input and HDMI path; signal problems can look like performance issues.

A display can support HDR but not 4K/120Hz, or support VRR without handling it the same way in every picture mode. Sony warns that VRR results vary by TV and provides separate troubleshooting for 4K/120Hz signal issues. Confirm each capability instead of using HDR support as a proxy for low latency.

When the problem is probably not HDR

The delay appears in every picture mode

If the same controller delay remains with HDR disabled, in Game Mode and in a direct HDMI connection, HDR is unlikely to be the underlying trigger. Continue by isolating the game, console output mode and display hardware.

Only online actions are delayed

If menus and offline play respond normally but an online match reacts late, investigate network conditions and the game service. HDR changes the local video signal; it does not explain internet latency.

Motion looks uneven rather than late

Stutter points toward frame delivery or game performance. Compare the game’s performance modes and refresh-rate settings while keeping HDR constant. A display setting cannot make a network packet arrive sooner, and HDR alone is not evidence of a frame-rate problem.

Choosing a display when low latency matters

If you are evaluating a TV or monitor for PS5, do not treat an HDR badge as a latency specification. Compare measured input lag at the resolution and refresh rate you will actually use. Also check whether Game Mode remains available in HDR, whether the screen supports the PS5 features you need, and which HDMI ports and cables are required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Measured input lag at your target resolution and refresh rate.
  • HDR performance while the display remains in its low-latency mode.
  • 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM support where your games and setup require them.
  • The exact HDMI port and cable requirements for those features.

Measurements from one model cannot be generalized to every display. A monitor that shows little HDR-related change in testing may use less processing than a television, while two TVs with similar HDR specifications may have different Game-mode behavior.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving HDR on Always On during a comparison. Unsupported apps and games are converted, so you are not comparing native SDR with native HDR.
  • Changing refresh rate at the same time as HDR. A 60Hz-to-120Hz or VRR change introduces another variable.
  • Checking only the SDR Game preset. The HDR preset may have its own processing and latency behavior.
  • Assuming ALLM and VRR are the same feature. They affect mode switching and refresh timing in different ways.
  • Blaming HDR for cable or handshake problems. An unstable 4K/120Hz signal can involve the cable, HDMI port, receiver or firmware.
  • Using pixel response as an input-lag measurement. Blur and ghosting describe pixel transitions, not the time before the display begins showing the received frame.

The practical verdict

HDR does not generally cause PS5 input lag. The strongest available testing indicates that HDR rarely changes measured input lag on monitors, while Sony’s guidance emphasizes the connected display, its HDMI input and its low-latency Game setting. If HDR appears to introduce delay, compare identical output conditions, verify the PS5 signal information, and inspect the display’s HDR-specific picture mode before disabling HDR. The result can vary by television, monitor, game and HDMI setup, so the correct fix is usually a display-setting or signal-path adjustment rather than abandoning HDR.
