No. Hexproof does not stop an opponent from countering your spell. Counterspell targets the spell on the stack—not you as its caster or a creature the spell might affect.
Why Hexproof does not stop Counterspell
Hexproof protects the specific permanent or player that has it from being targeted by spells or abilities controlled by opponents. The Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules define permanent Hexproof in rule 702.11b: “This permanent can’t be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control.” Rule 702.11c applies the same kind of protection to a player.
Counterspell targets a different game object: the spell on the stack. The rules allow spells on the stack to be targets, and rule 115.10a explains that an object is a target when a spell or ability identifies it with the word “target” or a keyword rule does so. Hexproof on you or on one of your creatures does not change what Counterspell targets.
What happens when a spell is countered
When you cast a spell, it goes onto the stack. An opponent can cast Counterspell targeting that spell. If Counterspell resolves, the spell is removed from the stack without resolving; a countered spell goes to its owner’s graveyard. Rule 701.6a describes countering as canceling a spell or ability, removing it from the stack so it does not resolve and none of its effects occur.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
This remains true even if your spell would affect a Hexproof creature. The creature is not the target of Counterspell; your spell is. Hexproof does not make spells you cast uncounterable or protect other objects by association.
When Hexproof does matter
Hexproof matters when an opponent’s spell or ability tries to target the permanent or player that has Hexproof. It does not protect a spell on the stack simply because that spell was cast by a Hexproof player or would affect a Hexproof permanent.
