Playing them in that order gives you the series’ release-era context, but the official product information does not establish that order is required to understand the games. If you are choosing editions, use Dark Souls Remastered for the first game, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin for the second, and Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades Edition for the third.
What order should you play the Dark Souls games?
- Dark Souls — or Dark Souls Remastered, its remastered edition.
- Dark Souls II — Scholar of the First Sin is the edition that bundles the game with its three DLCs.
- Dark Souls III — The Fire Fades Edition includes the base game and both DLC chapters.
This is release order for the three numbered games. FromSoftware’s company history places Dark Souls in 2011, Dark Souls II in 2014, and Dark Souls III in 2016; it lists Dark Souls Remastered separately in 2018. FromSoftware’s company history treats Remastered as a later version of the first game, not a fourth numbered entry.
Is playing in order necessary to understand the story?
Not according to the official information available: the publisher and developer pages establish the series and the games’ release and product details, but do not say that prior entries are required for basic comprehension. Release order is therefore a practical recommendation, not a confirmed rule about story chronology. Those pages also do not establish a definitive in-world timeline or explain every narrative connection, so a precise lore sequence should not be inferred from release dates alone.
Bandai Namco calls Dark Souls III “the final journey in the series” on its Dark Souls Trilogy product page. That is publisher product copy, not a detailed claim about how every event fits into the series’ lore.
