But region can affect DLC, eShop cards, download codes, accessories, support, and warranty coverage. If you are buying an imported game or console, check its supported region and the relevant Nintendo Account country before you pay.
Will a physical Nintendo Switch game from another region work?
Nintendo says Switch game cards are not region locked, except for consoles and game cards distributed in the Chinese region. So a game card bought in one region will generally run on a Switch from another.
There is an important qualification: Nintendo says it has not tested all overseas software and cannot guarantee full service and support for it. A game running is not a promise that every related Nintendo service or support option will be available.
China-region products are a specific exception
Nintendo says consoles and games distributed in the Chinese region are not compatible with consoles and games distributed in the Americas. That statement is specific to the regions Nintendo names; do not assume it establishes compatibility or incompatibility for every possible China-region pairing.

Check the supported region before buying
Nintendo recommends checking the game packaging or, on the console, opening the game menu and selecting Software Information > Support Information. This gives you the supported-region information to compare against related content, particularly DLC.
Will DLC work with an imported game?
Only when the DLC and game are released for the same region, according to Nintendo. A physical game card can run on your console and still fail to work with DLC bought for a different regional release.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Before buying DLC, check the game’s supported regions using its packaging or Software Information > Support Information, then compare them with the region associated with the account used to obtain the DLC. If DLC you already bought is missing, Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that same match.
Can you use an eShop card or download code from another country?
Your Nintendo Account’s country setting determines which country’s eShop you use on the Switch. Nintendo says an eShop card is compatible only with the country or region for which it was intended. A download code must be redeemed in an eShop set to the same region as the game.

- eShop card: Match the card’s intended country or region to the eShop you use. Nintendo says cards intended for another region are not exchangeable or refundable through Nintendo.
- Download code: Redeem it through an eShop set to the same region as the game.
- DLC: Confirm that the DLC and the game release are for the same region.
These are separate checks: changing or matching an account’s eShop country does not make an incompatible DLC release or eShop card region-matched.

A console may work outside its purchase country, but Nintendo identifies voltage, wireless communication requirements, and warranty coverage as considerations. It recommends using the console in the country where it was purchased. Overseas accessory compatibility is not guaranteed, and warranty coverage is limited to the country or region where the console was intended to be sold.

What to check before buying across regions
- Buying a physical game: Check the packaging or the game’s Software Information > Support Information for supported regions. Treat Nintendo’s general region-lock statement as applying subject to its China-region exception and support caveat.
- Buying DLC: Confirm that the DLC release and your game release are for the same region.
- Buying an eShop card: Match its intended country or region to your Nintendo Account’s eShop country.
- Using a download code: Confirm that the eShop region matches the game region for which the code is intended.
- Importing a console: Check voltage and wireless requirements, accessory compatibility, and where the console’s warranty applies.
