No. Minecraft Realms is optional: it is one way to keep a private world online, but players can also join a friend-hosted game, use a multiplayer server, or—on supported Bedrock devices—play over a local network. Invited guests do not need to buy their own Realms subscription. Console online play may, however, require a separate subscription from the console platform.
Do guests need to pay for a Realm?
No. The Realm owner pays for the Realms subscription; invited friends can join without purchasing their own. The host controls who is invited. Minecraft describes invited friends as able to play in the active world at any time. Minecraft’s Realms page explains the service and its plans, and its Java Realm joining instructions cover how invited players connect.

A guest still needs the compatible Minecraft edition and account permissions for multiplayer. An invitation to one edition’s Realm does not grant access from the other edition.
How can you play without owning a Realm?
Join a friend’s hosted world
Bedrock players can join a friend’s online world while that friend is playing. If the host closes the world or goes offline, others cannot join it until the host is back. See Minecraft’s instructions for joining a Bedrock friend’s online world.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs

- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Use a Java multiplayer server
Java players can join a server without a Realms subscription. Minecraft’s Java server instructions describe selecting a server, entering its address, or adding that address to the server list. If it is a friend-run server, the host generally needs to keep it running for others to play.
Play over a local network
Bedrock players on supported devices can play together over the same local network without a Realm. Minecraft says players need supported devices and current game versions; the Bedrock LAN guide has the setup details.

Which option fits your group?
| Option | Edition | Must the host be online? | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Realm | Java or Bedrock, in separate Realms | No; the Realm stays online | Private, invitation-based play managed by the owner. Guests do not need their own Realms subscription. |
| Friend-hosted world | Bedrock | Yes | Friends can join while the host’s world is open; closing it ends access until the host returns. |
| Multiplayer server | Java | Yes for a friend-run server | Join using the server address. A Realms subscription is not required. |
| Local network (LAN) | Bedrock on supported devices | Yes, the host must be playing | Players need supported devices, current versions, and the same local network. |
Realms is the convenient choice when a group wants a private world available while its owner is away. Friend-hosted play and LAN suit groups who play together while the host is present. A Java server is another route, though joining requires its address and server setup may take more effort.
What do Realms plans cost?
Minecraft’s Realms page listed the following US monthly prices and simultaneous-player limits when accessed in 2026. The limits count the owner plus the stated number of other players; the page also says invited-friend totals are different from simultaneous-player capacity. Prices and plan details can change, so check the current Realms page before subscribing.

Do Java and Bedrock players share a Realm?
No. Java and Bedrock multiplayer are separate: Java players join Java servers or Realms, while Bedrock players join Bedrock worlds, servers, Realms, or supported LAN games. A Java player cannot join a Bedrock Realm, and a Bedrock player cannot join a Java Realm. Cross-device play is available within Bedrock; Minecraft lists Java cross-play among Windows, Linux, and macOS. See Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements and its Realms information.
Could a console subscription still be required?
Yes. Realms is separate from a console platform’s online-play membership. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements list Xbox Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus for the relevant console online play, and Nintendo Switch Online for Nintendo Switch online multiplayer. Check the current rules for your particular console and game version. This platform requirement does not mean every player needs Realms.

What else can prevent multiplayer?
- Edition or version mismatch: Players need compatible editions and up-to-date game versions.
- Account permissions: Multiplayer must be allowed in account settings; child accounts may need a parent or guardian to enable permissions.
- Account sign-in: Console and mobile players need to sign in with a Microsoft account or linked account as applicable.
- Connection or invitation: Online play needs a stable connection, and a Realm requires an invitation from its host.
If a Bedrock connection fails, Minecraft’s multiplayer connectivity troubleshooting guide covers common issues. For a broader overview of play methods, see Minecraft’s guide to playing with friends.
