You can mix the blocks, too.
What you can use in the beacon pyramid
Although players often call them “ore,” the pyramid is made from mineral blocks. Iron, gold, emerald, diamond, and netherite blocks all qualify. You can use one material throughout or mix them in the same valid pyramid; the choice does not affect its function. Minecraft Wiki’s beacon reference lists the accepted materials and explains that the material type is cosmetic.

So choose blocks you already have, or pick the look you prefer. There is no gameplay benefit to spending diamonds or netherite on the base instead of using iron or gold.
Does the payment item change the beacon?
The pyramid and the beacon’s payment slot have different jobs. The pyramid’s blocks form the structure. After the beacon is active, its interface accepts an iron ingot, gold ingot, emerald, diamond, or netherite ingot to select an available status effect. Paying with a rarer item does not upgrade the pyramid or make the effect stronger. The beacon reference lists these payment items separately from the base blocks.

Mojang’s Bedrock 1.16.0 Nether Update notes explicitly state that netherite blocks can be used as a beacon base and netherite ingots as beacon fuel. That note documents the Bedrock update’s addition of those uses; it is not, by itself, a complete account of current mechanics across every edition.

The pyramid’s size and valid structure—not the rarity of its blocks—determine its power tier. A full level-four pyramid has four layers measuring 9×9, 7×7, 5×5, and 3×3, for a total of 164 mineral blocks. The Minecraft Wiki advancement guide gives this full-pyramid quantity and allows any combination of the five accepted block materials.

- Use iron or gold if those blocks are easiest for you to gather.
- Use emerald, diamond, or netherite blocks if you prefer their appearance or already have them available.
- Mix materials if that suits your build; it will not weaken the beacon.
- Keep rare materials for other uses if you would rather not spend them. They provide no extra beacon range or effect strength.
