Yes, but KDA is not a universal ranked score. In League of Legends and VALORANT, match outcome is central to ranked progression; Wild Rift also uses broader performance evaluations for recognition and Ranked Energy. In every case, KDA is most useful as a way to review combat—not as a substitute for winning, objectives, teamwork, or role-specific play.
What KDA can—and cannot—tell you
KDA summarizes kills, deaths, and assists. It can help you spot patterns in fights: whether you are dying out of position, converting opportunities into kills, or contributing through assists. But it leaves out why those events happened and what they accomplished. A death might enable a teammate to escape, secure a trade, or win an objective; a high ratio can also come from avoiding useful fights. Neither outcome is automatically good or bad without match context.
Ranked systems are game-specific. Keep four things distinct: the match result, the rating or rank points that change, any visible performance score, and recognition or rewards such as MVP. A score shown after a match is not necessarily an input to your ranked rating.
Does KDA affect ranked progression in each game?
| Game | What the cited official explanation says affects progression or evaluation | What KDA means in that context |
|---|---|---|
| League of Legends | MMR rises with wins and falls with losses; LP is awarded for wins and deducted for defeats. Riot describes team results as central to ladder movement. | A review statistic, not a disclosed replacement for match outcome or a formula players can use to calculate hidden MMR. |
| VALORANT | Riot says wins and losses have the biggest effect on rank. Outside the highest rank, individual performance can have a small effect on how quickly rank increases or decreases. | KDA should not be pursued at the expense of winning. The separate Performance Score is not used to determine RR gains or losses. |
| Wild Rift | Patch 7.3 describes broader S/A and MVP evaluations, with recognition and Ranked Energy rewards tied to performance ratings. | Kills and KDA are indicators, but evaluation also considers contributions that the ratio does not capture. The cited update does not establish that these awards determine underlying matchmaking rating. |
League of Legends: match results and team contribution
Riot says Matchmaking Rating (MMR) is used to place players and match them with players of similar skill. Wins raise MMR and losses lower it; LP rewards victories and is deducted after defeats. Riot’s current support description says players generally need 100 LP to advance a division, subject to other progression rules. That LP threshold is not a KDA rule. Riot’s MMR and matchmaking explanation and Ranked Overview describe these systems; neither lets a player infer an exact hidden MMR change from a scoreboard.

Riot’s developer explanation for not replacing team results with a KDA-style performance rating is that players might optimize a flattering scoreline rather than help the team win. Its examples include a support sacrificing themselves to save an ADC, a tank zoning several opponents, and an assassin diving a carry. Vision score can also reflect useful contribution that KDA misses. Riot’s matchmaking discussion explains that rationale.
VALORANT: rank points versus the post-match score
Riot’s ranked explanation says winning or losing has the biggest effect on rank. Outside the highest rank, individual performance may count to a small degree in how quickly rank rises or falls. The practical warning is explicit: optimizing KDA at the cost of wins can make rank trend downward. The explanation is from Riot’s competitive-team discussion of ranked progression, not a complete disclosure of every current RR rule. Read Riot’s ranked explanation.

Riot’s Performance Score support page, dated September 25, 2026, describes a separate post-match measure displayed on a 0–500 scale. It uses eight categories: damage, adjusted kills, adjusted deaths, trades, assists, agent-normalized utility, spike plants, and spike defuses. Riot says the score can determine match MVP and replaces ACS in several modes, but does not influence RR gains or losses. So a Performance Score may give more context than KDA for reviewing a match, but it is not a ranked-points meter. Riot’s Performance Score explanation lists the current details.
Wild Rift: broader performance recognition
In its September 14, 2026 Patch 7.3 announcement, Riot says updated S/A and MVP evaluation accounts for lane, champion, and role. Kills and KDA remain indicators, but the evaluation also considers vision impact, crowd control, objective participation such as dragon control, pushing, coordinated play, frontline damage absorption, and support that creates opportunities for teammates. Riot connects performance ratings to recognition and Ranked Energy rewards. The announcement does not establish that those awards change underlying matchmaking rating. How to review KDA without playing for the scoreboard
- Review deaths for decisions, not blame. Ask whether positioning, timing, or missing information made the death avoidable. Also check whether it enabled a worthwhile trade, save, objective, or team fight; self-sacrifice is not automatically correct just because a teammate benefited.
- Follow kills to their consequence. Did the kill create an opportunity to take an objective, gain map control, or protect a teammate? If not, consider whether the fight was useful or simply improved the line on the scoreboard.
- Inspect assists and role-specific work. In a MOBA, look at vision, objective participation, crowd control, frontline space, and support. In VALORANT, consider trades, agent utility, and spike plants or defuses as well as kills and deaths.
- Judge the match by the goal of ranked play. Prefer the decision that improves your team’s chance to win, even if it makes your personal KDA less impressive. Riot’s published explanations do not disclose enough to calculate an individual’s hidden MMR or exact RR change from KDA.
