Yes, but usually only at the margins. A higher keyboard polling rate shortens the time between USB reports, but it does not make the whole keyboard or game respond proportionally faster. Moving from 1,000 Hz to 8,000 Hz reduces the theoretical maximum wait for the next report by 0.875 milliseconds. For most typing and gaming, 1,000 Hz is a sensible default; try a higher rate only if your keyboard supports it, your connection stays stable, and you have a reason to pursue that small timing gain.
What keyboard polling rate means
Polling rate, report rate and USB report rate usually describe how often a keyboard sends its input state to the computer. The rate is measured in hertz (Hz): 1,000 Hz means a nominal report interval of one millisecond. A shorter interval can reduce the wait between a key event becoming available to the keyboard and the next USB report.
That interval is only one part of input latency. It is not the same as how quickly the keyboard scans switches, how far a key must travel to actuate, or how long its firmware filters switch chatter. QMK, for example, documents USB polling interval and debounce as separate settings in its configuration documentation.
- USB polling/report rate: How frequently the keyboard reports its state to the computer.
- Scan rate: How frequently the keyboard’s controller checks its switch matrix.
- Actuation point: How far a key must be pressed before the keyboard registers it.
- Debounce: Filtering used to avoid registering electrical switch chatter as multiple presses.
- Input latency: The complete time from physical key movement to the game or application reacting.
A high advertised report rate is not, by itself, a complete latency specification. A slower scan, debounce, firmware path or game-side input process can limit the effect.

Polling rate to report interval
The interval is the reciprocal of the rate: divide 1,000 milliseconds by the polling rate in hertz. The final column is the theoretical maximum wait for the next report, not a promise about end-to-end response time.
| Polling rate | Report interval | Theoretical maximum wait |
|---|---|---|
| 125 Hz | 8 ms | 8 ms |
| 250 Hz | 4 ms | 4 ms |
| 500 Hz | 2 ms | 2 ms |
| 1,000 Hz | 1 ms | 1 ms |
| 2,000 Hz | 0.5 ms | 0.5 ms |
| 4,000 Hz | 0.25 ms | 0.25 ms |
| 8,000 Hz | 0.125 ms | 0.125 ms |
How much faster is 8,000 Hz than 1,000 Hz?
For the USB report interval alone, the maximum possible reduction is 0.875 ms: 1 ms at 1,000 Hz minus 0.125 ms at 8,000 Hz. That is not an 8 ms improvement, nor does the keyboard make every part of its response eight times faster. The average wait within a reporting interval is generally below its maximum, and the key event must first be detected and processed before a useful report can be sent.
The practical effect is therefore a reduction in one source of timing uncertainty, not a transformation of total input latency. Corsair characterizes higher polling as potentially improving consistency, rather than changing ordinary use dramatically, in its polling-rate explanation. Razer’s Huntsman V3 TKL 8K manual likewise describes higher polling as more frequent delivery of keyboard status information.
When a higher polling rate may matter
Competitive games and repeated inputs
Players who make rapid, repeated or alternating inputs may value a shorter reporting interval, particularly when they are already using a low-latency setup and a high-refresh display. Corsair names Counter-Strike 2, Valorant and Apex Legends as examples where consistency and fast transitions may make higher polling more relevant. That is manufacturer guidance, not proof that every player or game will benefit.

Rapid-trigger and analog keyboards
On a rapid-trigger keyboard, adjustable actuation and release detection may be more consequential than USB polling rate alone. An analog keyboard can report changing key positions rather than only a simple pressed/released state, making update frequency potentially more relevant, but the actual benefit depends on the keyboard’s scanning, firmware and the game. A high USB rate cannot compensate for weak implementation elsewhere.
Typing, productivity and less timing-sensitive games
For ordinary typing, office work, turn-based games and most general gaming, the difference between 1,000 and 8,000 Hz is unlikely to be reliably noticeable. Do not assume that a subjective improvement comes from polling alone: a different switch, actuation point, debounce setting, rapid-trigger behavior or firmware may explain it.
What can matter more than the polling number
When comparing keyboards for responsiveness, consider the whole input path rather than treating the highest Hz figure as a verdict. Switch and scan behavior, actuation consistency, debounce, firmware quality, rollover, connection reliability and the game’s input handling all play a role. For a player considering a Hall-effect or rapid-trigger model, those features may be the reason to choose it; 8,000 Hz should not be treated as a substitute for them.
How to change a keyboard’s polling rate
There is usually no universal Windows setting for a USB keyboard’s hardware report rate. Windows Keyboard Properties options such as repeat delay and repeat rate change key-repeat behavior, not the USB polling rate; Razer distinguishes those Windows properties from its separate wired polling-rate control in the Huntsman V3 TKL 8K manual. The control is normally in the manufacturer’s utility, on the keyboard itself, or in firmware.

Before changing it
- Identify the exact keyboard model and check that its documentation says the desired rate is supported in your current connection mode.
- For a wired keyboard, connect it directly to the computer while changing the setting. A hub, dock, KVM or adapter can affect high-rate compatibility.
- Open the keyboard’s manufacturer utility and look for Polling Rate, Report Rate, USB Report Rate or Wired Polling Rate.
- Select the desired rate, apply or save the profile, and reconnect or restart the keyboard if the software requests it.
- Test key behavior and stability in your normal workload. A browser-based polling tester can offer an indication, but it may not perfectly measure the keyboard’s hardware behavior.
Do not assume that a keyboard ships at its advertised maximum. Corsair says some supported 8,000-Hz keyboards default to 1,000 Hz for compatibility; its support article lists the K65 RGB Mini, K70 RGB TKL and K100 among its supported models.
Logitech G316: G HUB or a shortcut
- Open G HUB and select the G316.
- Open the Performance tab, then click the Performance icon.
- Under REPORT RATE, choose the desired level.
Logitech also documents a model-specific shortcut: hold Fn and press F2 to switch directly to the 8-kHz report rate. A dedicated keyboard LED indicates the setting. These instructions apply to the G316, not automatically to every Logitech keyboard. See Logitech’s G316 instructions.
Wooting 80HE and 60HE V2: Wootility
- Open Wootility, available as a web version and downloadable software for Windows, macOS and Linux.
- Select Settings, then Keyboard settings.
- Find Polling rate, choose 1,000 Hz or another available option, and save or apply the profile if prompted.
Wooting’s guidance is specific to the 80HE and 60HE V2: if an 8,000-Hz keyboard is not detected at startup, needs reconnecting or has USB High-Speed compatibility problems, lower its rate to 1,000 Hz. Wooting says this changes the connection from USB High-Speed to USB Full-Speed. Follow its startup-detection troubleshooting steps.
Razer: Synapse
Open the keyboard in Razer Synapse and look for Wired Polling Rate. The Huntsman V3 TKL 8K manual documents that control, but the exact menu labels can vary by model and software version, so do not assume one click path applies to every Razer keyboard.

Corsair: model-dependent controls
Use the Corsair configuration software or a hardware control if the exact keyboard model provides one; check that model’s manual for the correct path. Corsair documents 8,000-Hz support on certain keyboards and notes in its product FAQ that some models use a BIOS switch to adjust polling rate and disable advanced features for legacy-motherboard compatibility. The control is not universal across the brand.
QMK firmware: change the USB interval cautiously
QMK exposes the USB interval through USB_POLLING_INTERVAL_MS. For a nominal 1-ms interval (1,000 Hz), the configuration is:
#define USB_POLLING_INTERVAL_MS 1
QMK documents this setting for the keyboard, mouse and shared NKRO/media-key interfaces. Do not infer that any board can safely run at 8,000 Hz or that an arbitrary interval will work: the controller, USB support and firmware architecture impose limits. A QMK edit also requires compiling and flashing firmware for the exact keyboard and board revision.
- Back up your keymap and current firmware.
- Open the keyboard’s
config.hand add or changeUSB_POLLING_INTERVAL_MS. - Compile the firmware for the correct board, enter bootloader mode and flash it.
- Test keys, NKRO, media keys, sleep/wake and BIOS compatibility. If the keyboard becomes unstable, reflash the previous firmware.
Consult the QMK configuration documentation before changing firmware.

Choosing a sensible starting rate
These are practical starting points, not manufacturer-certified requirements. Use a rate your specific keyboard supports and judge it on your own system.
| Use case | Starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Office work and general typing | 125–1,000 Hz | Higher rates are unlikely to change ordinary typing in a reliable, meaningful way. |
| General gaming | 1,000 Hz | A short 1-ms report interval without chasing marginal gains. |
| Competitive gaming | 1,000–4,000 Hz | Try a higher supported rate and keep it only if the system remains stable and you find a useful difference. |
| Enthusiast setup with compatible hardware | 4,000–8,000 Hz | For users pursuing the smallest report interval who accept compatibility and diminishing-return trade-offs. |
| Unstable USB setup or system | 1,000 Hz | A conservative setting to favor compatibility and troubleshoot problems. |
Higher rates can increase host-side processing, though Corsair characterizes the keyboard CPU impact as generally minimal and more noticeable on older systems. Its advice to use a modern system and a direct motherboard USB connection for 2,000–8,000 Hz is vendor guidance, not a universal hardware minimum. If you want to find your own useful setting, compare CPU usage, frame-time consistency, input behavior and stability as you increase the rate; keep it higher only when the result is measurable or personally meaningful. See Corsair’s higher-polling-rate guidance.
For wireless keyboards, check the model’s documentation rather than assuming its wired maximum applies: the wireless mode, receiver, firmware and power constraints can change available rates. Built-in laptop keyboards generally do not expose a user-adjustable USB polling-rate control.
Fixing problems after enabling 4,000 or 8,000 Hz
If the keyboard disappears after reboot, disconnects, causes unusual frame-time spikes or behaves erratically, use this troubleshooting order:
- Lower the rate to 1,000 Hz. This is the simplest compatibility test and, for the documented Wooting models, the vendor’s fallback for startup detection problems.
- Connect directly to the computer. Remove hubs, docks, KVMs and adapters from the path, then retry. Corsair recommends a direct motherboard connection; Logitech’s 8-kHz guidance also covers direct connection and suitable USB adapters.
- Try another USB port. If direct connection fixes the issue, the intermediary or port path may not be stable at the selected rate.
- Check firmware and configuration software. Confirm the correct model and active profile, then follow the manufacturer’s instructions for updates or recovery.
- Compare frame times as well as average FPS. If CPU usage or frame-time consistency worsens at a higher rate, step back to 2,000 or 1,000 Hz and retest under the same workload.
A rate that appears high in a specification may be only the selectable maximum, not the active setting. Check the profile and connection mode before concluding the keyboard is operating at that rate. High polling can reduce report-window uncertainty; it will not fix switch chatter, firmware bugs, a bad connection or game-side input handling.
Verdict
For most people, leave the keyboard at 1,000 Hz. A higher rate is a reasonable experiment for a supported, stable setup—especially when competitive play makes small timing differences worth testing—but 8,000 Hz buys at most 0.875 ms over 1,000 Hz in the theoretical report interval. Choose a keyboard for its overall switches, actuation, firmware, layout and reliability, not the polling-rate headline alone.
