Oculus Air Link Not Working? Here’s How to Fix Meta Quest PC VR

A symptom-first guide to fixing Oculus Air Link (now Meta Quest Link): use Ethernet and 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, reset pairing, check firewall and runtime service, then test cable Link.

The fastest reliable fix is to make the connection predictable: connect the Windows PC to the router by Ethernet, connect the Quest to the router’s 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, use a normal private (not guest) network, turn Air Link off, restart the router, PC and headset, then pair again in the Meta Quest Link app. If that fails, the symptom tells you whether to investigate discovery, pairing, the VR runtime, Windows security or Wi‑Fi performance.

“Oculus Air Link” is the older name. Current headsets and software may label the feature Meta Quest Link or Air Link; menu names vary by Quest model and Horizon OS version.

Identify the failure before changing anything

What you see Most likely area
PC does not appear in Air Link Network isolation, different SSIDs or subnets, mesh/extender routing, firewall, VPN or the PC app
PC appears but pairing code fails Stale pairing, account/app state, headset software or a desktop-app glitch
PC appears but Start or Launch is gray Incomplete Link session, desktop runtime, app state or compatibility
Connection starts, then returns to Quest Home Runtime crash, GPU driver, firewall, unstable Wi‑Fi or an overloaded PC
Connection works but is blurry or stutters Wi‑Fi congestion, distance, mesh backhaul, bitrate or GPU/CPU load
Air Link works but SteamVR does not SteamVR, OpenXR or a game-specific configuration
Cable Link also fails Meta Quest Link app, runtime, USB, GPU, drivers or PC compatibility

Air Link is a local headset-to-PC connection, not cloud streaming. Internet access can work normally while the Quest cannot reach the PC on the local network. Meta discusses this distinction in its support forum: Air Link uses local connectivity.

The 60-second recovery sequence

  1. Connect the PC directly to the router or access point with Ethernet.
  2. Connect the Quest to that router’s 5 GHz network. Meta recommends 5 GHz 802.11ac or 802.11ax as the starting configuration, not as an absolute requirement for every setup.
  3. In the headset’s Link or Air Link controls, turn Air Link off.
  4. Fully quit the Meta Quest Link app from the Windows notification area; closing its window may leave its processes running.
  5. Restart the router or access point, then the PC, then the headset. This router → PC → headset order is the hard-reboot sequence Meta support commonly recommends.
  6. Open the Meta Quest Link app and leave it running.
  7. Re-enable Air Link in the headset, select the PC and enter the verification code if requested.
  8. If the PC is visible but will not launch, restart the Oculus/Meta VR runtime service in Windows Services.

Meta’s troubleshooting guidance recommends disabling Air Link, restarting the devices and pairing again: support instructions.

If Air Link cannot find your PC

Prove that both devices are on the same reachable LAN

  • Use the same home router, not merely the same internet account.
  • Avoid guest Wi‑Fi, which commonly blocks wireless clients from reaching wired devices.
  • Check that the PC is not attached to a second router with its own subnet.
  • Pause VPN software and disconnect from corporate, school, apartment-managed or captive-portal networks while testing.
  • If the router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name, temporarily create separate names and put the Quest on 5 GHz.

A matching Wi‑Fi name does not guarantee a reachable LAN. Guest isolation, VLAN rules, double NAT, mesh roaming and wireless extenders can keep the Quest and PC apart while web browsing still works.

Remove mesh and extender variables

For diagnosis, connect both devices to the main router or a single nearby access point. Meta support recommends a non-mesh starting configuration; some mesh systems work, but roaming and wireless backhaul add extra failure points. Do not buy a new router until you have tested this simpler topology.

Check the Windows app and firewall

  • Confirm the Meta Quest Link app is installed, signed in to the intended Meta account and open during pairing.
  • In Windows Firewall, allow Meta Quest Link/Oculus software on Private networks.
  • Set a trusted home connection to the Windows Private network profile rather than Public.
  • Temporarily pause third-party antivirus or endpoint security only as a controlled test, then turn it back on immediately.
  • Do not permanently disable Windows Firewall or forward random ports.

Meta community support has specifically identified antivirus and firewall rules as causes of failed discovery: firewall and detection guidance.

If the PC appears but pairing or Launch fails

Clear stale app and pairing state

Repeat the recovery sequence rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app. Turn Air Link off, quit the desktop app from the tray, restart the router, PC and headset, then pair from a freshly opened app. Verify that the headset and desktop app are signed into the expected account.

Restart the Windows VR runtime

  1. Open Windows Services.
  2. Find Oculus VR Runtime Service or the current Meta/Oculus VR runtime entry.
  3. Restart it, then reopen the Meta Quest Link app.
  4. If it repeatedly stops, check its startup setting; Meta support has suggested Automatic (Delayed Start) in persistent cases.

This is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed cure. The relevant support response is Meta’s runtime and wired-Link guidance.

Use administrator mode only as a diagnostic

After a normal launch fails, right-click the Meta Quest Link app and try Run as administrator. If that changes the result, permissions or security software deserve investigation; it is not a reason to run every VR application elevated permanently.

Do not start SteamVR first. Establish a working Meta Quest Link session, then diagnose SteamVR or OpenXR separately. A gray Launch button can mean the PC is discovered but the Link session or runtime is not ready.

If Air Link connects and then disconnects

  • Move the router or access point into the same room as the headset, ideally with a clear path.
  • Keep the PC on Ethernet; a laptop’s Wi‑Fi connection adds another wireless hop and is less predictable.
  • Test beside the access point with other high-bandwidth traffic stopped.
  • Check for mesh roaming or a wireless backhaul and test a single access point.
  • Update the Quest software, Meta desktop app, Windows and GPU driver, but record versions first if the failure began immediately after an update.
  • Try a simple PC VR application before judging a demanding simulator or modded game.

A PC can meet nominal VR requirements and still fail because of a driver, thermal limit, encoder problem, hybrid-graphics selection or unusual multi-GPU/display arrangement. Meta support has advised simplifying multi-GPU or multi-display configurations when detection persists.

If the image is blurry, stutters or has high latency

Match the symptom to the cause

  • Blurry or heavily compressed: insufficient throughput, distance, interference or an aggressive streaming-quality setting.
  • Freezes while audio continues: a momentary network interruption.
  • Low frame rate with a stable image: GPU or CPU rendering load.
  • Severe delay: wireless path, routing, competing traffic or an overloaded PC.

Reduce variables in this order

  1. Test with the headset near the 5 GHz access point.
  2. Stop downloads, cloud synchronization and other bandwidth-heavy applications.
  3. Reduce Air Link bitrate or streaming-quality settings instead of assuming a fixed value works for every router.
  4. Lower in-game graphics settings to separate rendering load from network trouble.
  5. Compare results on a simple VR title.

Wi‑Fi 6 or 6E is not a guarantee of good Air Link. A nearby, well-configured Wi‑Fi 5 access point can outperform a distant or poorly configured Wi‑Fi 6 mesh system.

Test wired Quest Link to isolate the fault

  1. Turn Air Link off in the headset.
  2. Connect the Quest directly to a USB 3 port on the PC. Avoid hubs, extension adapters and questionable front-panel ports for this test.
  3. When asked about USB data access, choose Deny if your goal is Quest Link rather than file transfer.
  4. Accept the prompt to enable Meta Quest Link.

If cable Link works, the PC app, runtime, GPU and headset can probably establish PC VR; focus on the wireless network. If both cable and Air Link fail, investigate the app, runtime, drivers, firewall and compatibility instead. Meta’s USB procedure is documented in its support response: USB 3 and wired-Link steps.

Updates, compatibility and hardware edge cases

Check for updates to the headset, Meta Quest Link app, Windows, GPU driver and router firmware, but do not assume “latest” means “fixed.” A newly released headset or desktop-app update can introduce a regression. If the problem started after an update, note the date and versions before changing several variables.

Use Meta’s current compatibility documentation for your exact headset and PC rather than relying on old GPU or CPU lists. Compatibility, menu labels and supported features can differ by model and software release; no single universal 2026 Air Link bug or version-specific cure is established here.

Alternatives when Air Link remains unreliable

Option Best use Limit
Meta Quest Link cable Stable latency, congested or managed Wi‑Fi, and a diagnostic control case Restricts movement and cannot fix a broken app, runtime or GPU
Steam Link Primarily SteamVR libraries; free Valve alternative Targets SteamVR content and still needs a strong local network
Virtual Desktop Another wireless workflow when the LAN is strong but Air Link is the failing component Paid Quest app and separate PC streamer; not a guaranteed fix
ALVR Technically confident users wanting an open-source option More manual setup and variable compatibility

Buy a cable or access point only after testing the existing network. A new router cannot repair guest isolation, a blocked firewall or a stopped VR runtime.

When to contact Meta Support

Escalate after testing both Air Link and cable Link. Include:

  • Quest model and headset software version
  • Windows version, GPU model and driver version
  • Whether the PC uses Ethernet, the router model, Wi‑Fi band and mesh status
  • The exact symptom, error text and date it began
  • Results from Air Link and cable Link
  • Screenshots of a missing PC, pairing error or gray Launch button

For persistent discovery failures, collect the Meta/Oculus PC diagnostic logs using Meta’s support workflow and attach the generated ZIP archive to the ticket. A support thread describing that process is available here.
