Yes—level matters in Elden Ring because each level lets you raise an attribute that can improve survivability, equipment options, damage, or spellcasting. But levels are not a direct power score: the benefit of a point depends on your build, weapon or casting tool, and how close the relevant stat is to a softcap.
What your character level actually changes
Think of leveling as assigning attribute points, not collecting power automatically. Vigor can improve how much punishment you survive; Endurance affects equip load and thus your roll category; and Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, or Arcane can matter when your chosen weapon or casting tool benefits from them. Points can also unlock equipment or spells by meeting their attribute requirements.
Those benefits are not interchangeable. A damage stat is of limited use if your weapon does not scale well with it, while meeting a weapon requirement lets you use it as intended. The practical question is whether the next point improves something your character needs.
Why the benefit of each level changes
Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s official advanced-stats guide, published July 19, 2023, notes that stats do not increase linearly. Its Vigor examples show why: 40 Vigor corresponds to 1,450 HP, 60 to 1,900 HP, and 99 to 2,100 HP. The guide also illustrates the changing returns between adjacent points: going from 39 to 40 Vigor adds 48 HP, while going from 40 to 41 adds 26 HP.

The guide identifies 40 and 60 as Vigor softcaps. A softcap is a point where returns diminish, not a hard limit that prevents further investment. These figures are guide examples, not a universal instruction to stop at a particular level: your needs depend on your build and what you want to survive.
When a level improves weapon damage
Meet requirements before chasing scaling
Weapon requirements and scaling serve different purposes. Requirements determine whether you can use the weapon effectively; according to the official guide, damage is significantly reduced if you do not meet them. Once you meet the requirements, raising an attribute can increase damage when the weapon scales with that stat.

Account for weapon upgrades
A weapon’s damage combines base damage and attribute scaling, and its scaling improves as the weapon itself is upgraded. As the guide puts it, “The scaling of weapons will also increase with the weapons’ own level.” That means another character point is not automatically a better investment than upgrading your weapon. The guide establishes that both matter, but it does not provide a universal point-for-upgrade exchange rate; compare the options for your actual weapon.
Two-handing can reduce the Strength you need to invest
In the guide’s described use cases, two-handing applies a 1.5× Strength modifier. This can let you satisfy a Strength requirement with fewer points invested in Strength. It does not provide the same bonus to Dexterity.

When a level improves spellcasting
For sorceries and incantations, damage comes from the sorcery or incantation scaling of the casting tool. Meeting a spell’s attribute requirement makes it usable, but does not by itself maximize the catalyst’s scaling. Before investing another point, check whether the spell’s requirement is met and whether your casting tool actually benefits from the stat you plan to raise.
What to level first—and when to stop
There is no single best character level or attribute target for every build. The official guide gives example thresholds for different attributes, including around 20, 55, and 80 for Strength and Dexterity, but weapon and spell scaling have their own described breakpoints. Treat these as guidance about diminishing returns, not mandatory targets or hard caps.

- If you are dying before you can act: consider whether Vigor would help you survive mistakes before investing in damage.
- If you cannot use intended equipment: raise the attribute required for your weapon or spell before adding points just to chase bonus damage.
- If requirements are met: invest in damage attributes that match your weapon or casting tool’s scaling.
- Compare a stat point with a weapon upgrade: because upgrading can improve both weapon performance and scaling, check the weapon you actually use rather than assuming character levels always give the larger return.
- Reassess as returns diminish: a softcap is a prompt to compare alternatives, not an instruction that further points are wasted.
Does level work differently in PvP?
Some damage balance does differ. Bandai Namco Europe’s version 1.07 notes, dated October 13, 2022, introduced separate PvP damage scaling for weapons, skills, spells, and incantations. The notes say those PvP-exclusive adjustments do not affect single-player or co-op, so a damage change for fights against other players should not be assumed to apply to PvE.
Level correction and multiplayer matching are related but distinct questions. The version 1.09 notes record a fix for a specific bug involving an invader’s level correction when using the Phantom Bloody Finger. That does not establish the complete matchmaking formula or exact level and weapon-upgrade ranges, so there is no supported universal bracket to give here.
Current official update information
As of August 27, 2026, Bandai Namco Entertainment America lists version 1.17 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam, with App Ver. 1.17 and Regulation Ver. 1.17. The publisher says the update is required for online play and lists balance changes, including a change to Intelligence scaling for the Carian Sorcery Sword. Because updates can supersede one another, check the version shown on your title screen for the current status.
