Yes. A Linode Compute instance sending a continuous stream to YouTube generates outbound transfer, which counts against the applicable monthly transfer allowance. If your account exceeds that allowance, Linode can bill for the excess; the allowance is not necessarily a cutoff that stops the stream.
What Linode counts as outbound transfer
For a stream pushed from a Linode server to YouTube, the relevant traffic is data leaving the instance. Linode’s Network Transfer Usage and Costs documentation describes metered transfer as outbound traffic from Compute Instances and NodeBalancers to destinations outside the origin data center, over IPv4 and IPv6.
This is a quantity-of-data billing question, not a question about the instance’s advertised network speed. A higher sustained stream bitrate sends more data over the month. Traffic coming into the server is a different direction from the outbound stream push.

These are calculations from a constant bitrate, not measured Linode or YouTube usage. Real totals can differ because of bitrate variation, protocol overhead, reconnects, and other outbound traffic. Use the stream’s sustained average bitrate rather than its peak or the server’s network-speed rating.

What overage rates apply?
The Linode Network Transfer Usage and Costs policy surfaced in 2026 lists overage rates of $0.005 per GB in most listed data centers, $0.007 per GB in São Paulo, and $0.015 per GB in Jakarta. These are policy-reported rates, not a guaranteed quote for every account. Rates, covered data centers, and plan allowances can change; check the current policy and your account before estimating a bill.
Your exact included transfer amount depends on the applicable plan and account. Linode staff explanations describe monthly transfer allowances as pooled across services, so another active service may use part of the same headroom. Check the transfer usage view in Cloud Manager for your account’s allowance and consumption rather than assuming the instance’s standalone allowance is the whole pool.

How to estimate whether your stream will exceed the pool
- Find the stream’s sustained average bitrate in Mbps. Use a representative value for the stream as it actually runs.
- Multiply that bitrate by 324 to estimate decimal GB for 30 days. For example, 4 Mbps is about 1,296 GB before overhead and other traffic.
- Check the current monthly transfer pool and consumption in Linode Cloud Manager. Account for transfer used by other services.
- Compare the estimate with the remaining allowance. Leave headroom for bitrate changes, reconnects, and other outbound use.
- If the estimate exceeds the available pool, confirm your plan’s current overage rate for its region and budget for possible charges.
What happens when the allowance is exceeded?
Linode staff guidance says excess transfer is billed and the allowance is not a hard limit that automatically cuts off outbound traffic. That means a running stream may continue while additional usage accrues charges. Monitor Cloud Manager rather than relying on an automatic stop to control costs.
