To caption a prerecorded sermon in a continuous YouTube live stream, send synchronized captions while the video is streaming. YouTube supports two live routes: embed EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the outgoing video, or send captions through a supported HTTP caption feed. Uploading an SRT or other caption file to a regular YouTube video does not caption a separate live broadcast.
Choose how captions will reach the live stream
YouTube’s live caption instructions describe two ways to deliver captions: embedded caption data in the video signal, or a separate caption feed sent to YouTube. The encoder or caption software must be able to play your sermon’s timed captions in sync with its audio. YouTube’s general instructions do not guarantee that a particular encoder or service can import and synchronize every sidecar file format.
| Route | Use it when | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 | Your encoder can read the sermon’s caption source and embed captions in its outgoing video. | Set the stream’s caption option to Embedded 608/708 in Live Control Room and configure the encoder to output EIA-608 or CEA-708. YouTube says file-based caption handling depends on the setup, and its live-caption page says it currently supports one embedded caption track. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements |
| HTTP caption feed | Compatible caption software can send a timed feed separately from the video encoder. | Enable captions in stream setup, copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL, and configure supported software to send the feed. YouTube’s event instructions call for a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay and allow only one caption feed per stream entry point. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements |
The YouTube Live Streaming API names these caption modes closedCaptionsEmbedded and closedCaptionsHttpPost. It also states that ultra-low latency does not support closed captions, so do not select that latency mode for a captioned stream. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveBroadcasts
Set up embedded captions
- Check the caption source against the encoder. Confirm with the encoder’s documentation or vendor that it can read your caption format and embed timed EIA-608/CEA-708 data during playout. Do not assume that an SRT or VTT sidecar will work just because the encoder accepts video files.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. In the stream settings, choose Embedded 608/708 for captions. YouTube’s instructions describe the stream settings and encoder configuration as a coordinated setup; the exact encoder controls depend on the product. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Use the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room, and configure the encoder’s outgoing video and embedded caption output. YouTube’s encoder guide explains connecting an encoder through Live Control Room. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Check the caption track and playback. YouTube’s live-caption guidance says it currently supports one 608/708 caption track. Confirm the encoder is sending the intended language and track, then check that captions appear at the right moments in the live preview.
Set up an HTTP caption feed
- Enable live captions in stream setup. In Live Control Room, turn captions on and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL. Treat that URL as a stream credential and give it only to the caption software and people responsible for configuring it.
- Configure compatible caption software. Set it to send a synchronized caption feed to the signed URL. YouTube documents the transport, but the software must handle the sermon’s existing caption timeline and time base; ask its vendor specifically about timed-file import, playout restart, and synchronization for prerecorded content.
- Set the broadcast delay. YouTube’s event instructions call for a 30- or 60-second delay with HTTP caption delivery. Choose and configure the delay as part of the stream setup so captions and video are aligned.
- Use one feed for the stream entry point. YouTube allows only one caption feed per stream entry point. Plan language and caption routing accordingly rather than expecting to attach multiple independent feeds there.
Keep the sermon and caption timeline together
For either route, captions must remain synchronized with the sermon audio while the prerecorded file plays. Verify that the encoder or caption service starts the caption timeline at the correct point, preserves timing through the entire sermon, and handles the way your continuous stream transitions or restarts content. YouTube’s documentation establishes the delivery methods, but it does not prescribe one universal method for playing every prerecorded sidecar file through every encoder or caption application.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a 24/7 feed, test a sermon start, a transition to the next item, and a loop or playlist restart. A caption file whose timecodes begin at zero may need the supporting software to restart or remap its timeline when the video restarts; establish that behavior with the product vendor before relying on it in a public schedule.
Why uploading an SRT to a video is not enough
YouTube supports caption-file formats such as SubRip (.srt) and SubViewer (.sbv/.sub) for caption tracks on videos. Those files contain text and display timecodes, but uploading one to a regular video creates that video’s caption track; it does not send caption data to a separate continuous live broadcast. Use a live caption route during playout. YouTube Help: Supported subtitle and closed caption files

Test before scheduling the public stream
- Run an unlisted test. Test the complete path—video source, encoder, caption software if applicable, and YouTube—before deploying the public schedule.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the video and audio are present and that captions appear, use the expected language, and track the spoken words rather than arriving early or late.
- Check the whole timeline. Watch the start, a middle section, a sermon transition, and any loop or playlist restart. Confirm that captions do not disappear, duplicate, or continue over the wrong sermon.
- Monitor the live output. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality. Keep monitoring during operation so a dropped feed or synchronization problem is noticed. YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips
Tools and equipment to verify
YouTube’s live-caption page lists Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or greater), Case CATalyst (BCS version 14.52 or greater), CaptionMaker (version 5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net as options associated with live caption delivery. Those listings do not establish that each product imports and synchronizes a prerecorded sermon’s particular caption file. Confirm that exact workflow with the vendor before choosing a tool. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
If your current encoder cannot emit embedded captions, a hardware encoder with EIA-608/CEA-708 support may be relevant, but check its supported caption-file formats and live output behavior first. A purchase is not automatically necessary: YouTube says streamers do not need expensive equipment and can use what they have. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

How continuous feeds relate to broadcasts
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a broadcast—the event or watchable video—from a stream, the audiovisual feed sent to YouTube. A stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts, and Google describes a 24/7 feed that continues while a separate broadcast is started for part of that feed. That architecture can help with continuous-channel planning, but it does not change the caption requirement: captions still need to arrive through the selected live caption route. YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams
Troubleshooting caption problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No captions on the live stream | A caption file was uploaded only to a regular video, or live caption delivery is not enabled or connected. | Confirm that captions are being sent during the live broadcast through embedded 608/708 output or the signed HTTP ingestion URL, rather than relying on a video’s uploaded caption track. |
| Embedded captions do not appear | The encoder may not read the sidecar format or may not be outputting EIA-608/CEA-708. | Check the encoder’s documented format support and output settings, plus Embedded 608/708 in YouTube stream settings. |
| Captions arrive early or late | The caption and video timelines are not aligned, or the HTTP route’s configured broadcast delay does not match the setup. | Verify the file time base and start point with the encoder or caption-software vendor; for HTTP delivery, check the configured 30- or 60-second delay and repeat an unlisted test. |
| Captions fail after a sermon change or loop | The caption application may not restart or remap the timed file when the video changes or loops. | Ask the vendor how its file playout handles transitions, restart, and synchronization, then test those exact events in an unlisted stream. |
| HTTP captions cannot connect | The software may not support YouTube’s caption-ingestion method, the signed URL may be wrong or stale, or more than one feed may be attached to the entry point. | Recheck the current signed Captions Ingestion URL, supported software configuration, and the one-feed-per-entry-point limit. |
| Captions are unavailable in ultra-low latency mode | YouTube’s Live Streaming API says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. | Use a latency mode that supports the caption workflow instead of ultra-low latency. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos running as a continuous YouTube stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and caption delivery still needs to be configured through a supported YouTube live-caption route; verify how your caption workflow works with the playout setup.
