If you mean lowering its HP, yes. Weakening a wild Pokémon makes it easier to catch. Lowering its Attack, Defense, or Speed is a different matter: the cited official guidance does not identify those changes as improving catch odds. The exact mechanics vary by game, so the detailed advice below is scoped to the titles named.
Which stats matter for catching?
HP is the key distinction. In its Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl guide, Pokémon recommends weakening a target until its HP is very low, ideally in the red zone, while avoiding a knockout. The same guide names sleep and paralysis as conditions that can make a Pokémon easier to catch. Pokémon’s catching guide
Attack and Defense affect damage dealt or received, while Speed affects which Pokémon acts first. The guide’s capture advice focuses instead on low HP and status conditions; it does not say that reducing those other battle stats improves catch odds.
How to weaken a Pokémon without knocking it out
- Use an attack that can lower the target’s HP safely. If it is already close to fainting, choose a weaker move or stop attacking.
- Where available, use False Swipe: Pokémon’s guide notes that it can reduce HP without accidentally causing the target to faint.
- Once the target is at very low HP, throw a suitable Poké Ball. Sleep or paralysis can help if you can apply either condition without defeating it.
A weakened or status-affected Pokémon can still escape an ordinary Poké Ball, so treat these as ways to improve your chances, not as guarantees.

Choose a ball for the encounter
In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Pokémon lists situation-specific examples: a Dusk Ball at night or in caves, a Net Ball for Water- or Bug-type Pokémon, and a Quick Ball on the first turn. What changes outside a standard battle?
Pokémon Legends: Arceus also supports catching Pokémon without first weakening them in a conventional battle. Nintendo recommends adapting to a Pokémon’s behavior, sneaking up, and using a back strike, which it says gives a higher chance of success. Why there is no universal catch-rate number
Capture rules are not identical across every Pokémon game. Smogon’s technical analysis describes a formula in its stated scope that takes current HP, the Poké Ball modifier, the species’ catch rate, and a status modifier into account.
