Doom in a PDF: What More Do You Need to Hear?

A playable Doom port runs inside a PDF viewer using JavaScript—but text-field controls, a monochrome display and modest performance make it a technical curiosity, not a practical way to play.

Yes, Doom is playable inside a PDF—not as a video, but as a constrained port that uses JavaScript in a compatible PDF viewer. The demo’s reported working setup is a Chromium-based browser; it is a technical curiosity, not a practical replacement for playing Doom normally.

How can Doom run inside a PDF?

A PDF can do more than display fixed pages when opened in a viewer that supports its JavaScript features. This project uses that capability to run a streamlined version of Doom. The PDF Association’s January 2025 roundup points to both the demo and its source code.

According to Ars Technica’s 2025 report, the creator compiled a streamlined Doom codebase with an older version of Emscripten that outputs asm.js. The document takes keyboard input through a designated text field, then approximates the game display with ASCII characters spread across 200 text fields—one for each horizontal screen line.

That makes the answer to “Can it run Doom?” a real yes: the player supplies input and the game generates a changing display. The format is the stunt; the PDF viewer is doing the work.

What do you need to try it?

The PDF Association says the demo requires a Chromium-based browser. Ars Technica identifies Chromium’s built-in PDF engine, PDFium, as the relevant environment and reports that the file does not work in generic desktop Adobe Acrobat.

Open the demo through the project link on the PDF Association page and follow the file’s current instructions. Compatibility is not established for every browser version, device, PDF reader, or security configuration, so the reported setup should not be read as a universal compatibility guarantee.

What is the experience like?

The technical constraints are part of the joke—and the reason this is better understood as a demo than a convenient way to play.

  • Display: Ars Technica describes a six-color monochrome presentation made from text fields.
  • Speed: The report gives performance of about 13 frames per second, or roughly 80 milliseconds per frame. This is a reported figure for the port, not an independent benchmark.
  • Controls: Input goes through a text field rather than ordinary game controls, making simultaneous actions such as moving and shooting difficult.
  • Sound: Ars Technica reports that the demo has no sound.

In other words, “playable” is accurate, but it does not mean smooth, full-featured, or comfortable by conventional game standards.

Is the PDF itself a game, or a security risk?

It is a game demo running through JavaScript capabilities exposed by the PDF viewer, not simply a recording of Doom embedded on a page. That establishes what the project does; it does not, by itself, establish that this particular file is malicious or unsafe. The cited coverage does not provide a project-specific security assessment, so avoid treating either the format or the demo as a general safety guarantee.

A separate Register report covers an experiment involving Linux in a PDF. That is a different project and should not be confused with DoomPDF.

Is Doom the only game you can play in a PDF?

No. The PDF Association also points to Tetris and Undying Dusk as examples of games made playable in PDF files. They share the larger idea of using a document format as an unexpected runtime, rather than making PDFs a sensible platform for everyday gaming.

Why make this at all?

The appeal is the mismatch: Doom, a landmark first-person shooter, running in a format most people associate with forms and documents. As the PDF Association puts it, “Why? Why not! Try it!” The engineering challenge is in adapting the game’s input and display to what a JavaScript-capable PDF viewer can provide.

The demo and source are linked from the PDF Association roundup. Adafruit’s January 15, 2025 account identifies the creator as Allen, known as ading2210, and reports a GNU GPL v2 license; check the repository itself for the current license terms.
