You do not need PS Plus for solo play, and the PlayStation Store lists local play separately from online play. A Minecraft Realms subscription does not replace PS Plus for playing online from a PlayStation console.
When Minecraft requires PS Plus
You need an active PlayStation Plus subscription to join a friend’s online world or play Minecraft online from a PS4 or PS5. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements list PlayStation Plus as the required premium online subscription for console multiplayer, and the US PlayStation Store listing says, “PS Plus required for online play.”

This also applies when you play with people on other platforms: cross-play does not remove the PlayStation online-subscription requirement for the player using a PlayStation.
When you can play without PS Plus
Solo play
PS Plus is not required for single-player Minecraft.

#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Local play and split-screen
The Store listing distinguishes local play from online multiplayer and lists one to four local players. It does not state that PS Plus is needed for local play. Its online-play listing, by contrast, specifies up to eight players with PS Plus. These player counts are from the US PlayStation Store listing, accessed in 2026; details may differ by regional listing.
Does Minecraft Realms include the online requirement?
No. Realms is Minecraft’s hosted-world service, while PS Plus is the PlayStation subscription required for console online multiplayer. A Realm can provide the world you join, but it does not replace PS Plus when you connect from PS4 or PS5. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements also say you need an invitation to join a Realm.

Can another account’s PS Plus membership cover you?
Possibly, if PlayStation’s benefit-sharing conditions are met. PlayStation says selected benefits, including online multiplayer, can be shared with other players on one PS5 when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, and on one PS4 designated as the primary PS4. Account and parental-control restrictions may apply. Follow PlayStation’s instructions for sharing PlayStation Plus benefits to check the setup; sharing is conditional, not automatic across every account or console.
