Does Mojang Delete Inactive Accounts? Migration and Microsoft Rules

There is no official Minecraft statement in the sources cited here saying Mojang routinely deletes accounts simply because their owners stop using them. The main issue for an old, unmigrated Mojang account is that migration to a Microsoft account has ended. Microsoft has a separate inactivity policy for Microsoft accounts, and Minecraft describes account deletion as a process that begins when the user requests it.

What happened to unmigrated Mojang accounts?

Minecraft’s May 8, 2023 migration announcement said migration from Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts was complete and that unmigrated accounts could no longer be moved. Its update names September 19, 2023 as the cutoff for signing in to Minecraft.net or the Launcher to migrate.

A separate Minecraft Help article about Mojang accounts says the grace period ended December 18, 2023. That article is in Spanish and labeled as AI translated, so the official pages conflict on the exact date. The practical point is consistent: migration is closed, and the cited guidance does not offer a way to migrate an unmigrated account now.

That loss of migration eligibility is not the same as evidence that Mojang deleted the account for inactivity. Minecraft Help says a Java single-player world may still be stored locally, but cannot be played unless Java Edition is purchased using a Microsoft account. It also says legacy capes and skins cannot be recovered through a new account, and an old username may no longer be available.

Which account situation applies to you?

How Microsoft’s inactivity policy applies

Microsoft’s Microsoft account activity policy, updated November 6, 2020, says: “Except as provided below, you must sign in to your Microsoft account at least once in a two-year period to keep your account active.” This is a Microsoft-account rule, not a Mojang inactivity rule.

The policy lists exceptions, including qualifying purchases or access to a current Microsoft product or service, active subscriptions, Microsoft Store publishing, certifications, account balance, amounts owed, certain family-account circumstances, and legal or other Microsoft exceptions. Microsoft says account activity status can be checked through account management; recent activity may take up to 30 days to appear. Review the policy itself for the conditions and exceptions that fit your account.

What happens after a deletion request?

Minecraft’s privacy guidance describes deletion as a user-requested process. It says there is a 30-day grace period after the request. After that period, the guidance describes permanent loss of access to owned games, cancellation of Realms, and removal of associated game data. The route for submitting a request depends on when the game license was purchased, so use the instructions on the privacy page for your account history and region.
