Neverwinter Nights 2 is designed around a mix of companion AI and direct character control. Its manual documents both options; player forum posts describe confusing or inconsistent orders, but they are anecdotes, not evidence that every party behaves badly.
How NWN2 expects you to manage a party
The Neverwinter Nights 2 manual describes a party of up to four characters: your player character and as many as three companions. You can switch to a companion by selecting that character’s portrait or using a keyboard shortcut, then access their character sheet and inventory.

The game also lets you configure companion AI in the Character Screen’s Behavior tab. The manual says this applies to the player character too when that character is not active. As it puts it: “If you don’t wish to directly control your companions, you can give them AI behaviours to fit your strategy and play style.” These instructions describe the documented original PC interface; menu labels and key bindings may differ by version or control setup.
Why party control can feel awkward
Players have reported frustration with party AI and coordinating commands. A GOG forum thread titled “poor Party AI” includes complaints about companions following orders inconsistently and reports of pausing and repeating commands. An Obsidian forum discussion describes command priority and Stand Ground behavior as confusing or unreliable.

Those posts are individual player accounts, not controlled tests or official confirmation of a general defect. They do, however, help explain why the system can feel frustrating: the game offers autonomous behavior, but expects you to take direct control when you need precise actions. If you expect continuous tactical control over every companion, the AI-driven parts may feel like they are getting in the way. Treating direct control as an occasional correction may be more manageable. That is a practical interpretation of the documented controls and player reports, not a measured comparison.
What to try when companions do not do what you expect
- Review each companion’s behavior settings. Open the character’s Character Screen and check the Behavior tab, where the manual says AI behavior can be configured. The available options may depend on your game version.
- Take control for actions that need precision. Select the companion’s portrait or use the relevant keyboard shortcut in your setup. You can then act as that character and access their character sheet and inventory.
- Pause and issue orders deliberately. Some players in the GOG discussion report pausing and repeating orders as a workaround. It is community advice, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check the patch notes if the problem is specifically the camera. Aspyr’s Enhanced Edition Patch 3 notes list a fix for camera position after changing areas while controlling a companion in Exploration Mode. This addresses that camera issue, not every complaint about AI or orders.
So, is it the game or you?
Some other players have found the party AI and command coordination frustrating, so the feeling is not unique. But the available evidence does not show how common the problem is or establish that the entire control system is defective. NWN2 gives you both configurable AI and direct companion control; checking behavior settings and switching characters when precision matters are the most grounded first steps.
