Disney and Epic’s Fortnite partnership is a metaverse move in the sense that it aims to connect games, entertainment, fan creation and, now, a theme-park attraction—not because Disney has already launched one complete virtual world. Announced in 2024, the multiyear project is being built out through distinct Fortnite experiences and creator tools. Its clearest physical-to-digital example arrived in 2026, linking a Fortnite island to the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.
What Disney and Epic announced
On February 7, 2024, The Walt Disney Company and Epic Games announced a multiyear collaboration to build an “open, persistent and social” games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. The proposed experience would let people play, watch, shop, engage with Disney stories and characters, and create and share their own experiences. Disney named Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar alongside its own properties, and said Unreal Engine would power the project.
Disney also announced a $1.5 billion investment in Epic for an equity stake, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. The announcement does not establish the investment’s eventual closing status or Disney’s ownership percentage, and it does not specify a final launch date, complete feature set or commercial model. Disney described future products and services as forward-looking statements.
Disney CEO Robert A. Iger called it “Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games” and pointed to opportunities for growth and expansion. Epic CEO and founder Tim Sweeney described the goal as a “persistent, open and interoperable ecosystem” bringing Disney and Fortnite communities together. Those phrases describe an ambition, not proof that a unified world with all the announced features is already available.

What the partnership has delivered so far
By October 2026, the clearest evidence is a growing set of individual Fortnite experiences and tools for approved fan-made content. These are meaningful steps toward a connected entertainment ecosystem, but they should not be mistaken for the finished 2024 vision.
Star Wars experiences and creator tools
In a May 19, 2026 update, Disney described a live Mandalorian and Grogu watch-party island, including a film preview and community interaction, and announced an official Star Wars toolkit for Fortnite creators. Disney said players could collaborate or compete across PC, console and mobile. A June 2026 Disney update reported that custom Star Wars islands had drawn nearly 8 million players in their first 72 hours following the official toolkit’s launch. That is a company-reported result for those islands, not a current Fortnite audience total.
The Simpsons joins the creator program
On June 17, 2026, Disney announced that The Simpsons was joining Fortnite’s IP Partner Program. The announcement said an official Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) toolkit was planned for later in 2026, giving developers a way to use approved franchise characters, locations and assets in Fortnite experiences. The announcement’s timing was prospective; it does not establish whether that Simpsons toolkit subsequently launched.
Disney also reported that more than 80 million players spent 780 million hours in the Fortnite Simpsons season in fall 2025. Those are Disney’s reported figures for that season, not independently verified measurements or a count of current players.

A broader history of Disney inside Fortnite
Disney’s 2024 announcement cited the Fortnite Marvel Nexus War with Galactus, which it said attracted more than 15.3 million concurrent players. The figure is Disney’s report about that event, not a present-day measure of Fortnite activity. The same announcement cited more than 3 billion video-game players worldwide; that, too, is a figure Disney published in 2024 rather than a current player count.
How Smugglers Gambit connects the park and the game
The strongest example of the partnership crossing from a digital Fortnite experience into a physical Disney one is Smugglers Gambit. Disney announced on August 15, 2026, that the Fortnite island would connect with the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, launching August 16.
In the attraction, guests collect crates that can unlock Fortnite rewards. Eligible guests can link their MyDisney and Epic accounts to receive post-ride rewards; guests who cannot link accounts can redeem a code in Fortnite instead. Valid park admission is required to ride the attraction. Disney’s announcement says Fortnite is free to download on PC, console and mobile, but a free game download does not remove the park-admission requirement for the ride-linked part of the experience.
Disney’s official Fortnite hub also promotes Smugglers Gambit and other Star Wars games. As of the information available for this article, it advertises a free Carbonite Fishstick Backbling for eligible linked accounts through October 31, 2026. That promotion is time-limited, so check the hub for current eligibility and availability before relying on it.

How much of the metaverse vision is real?
“Metaverse” is a useful interpretive label for Disney and Epic’s ambition, not the formal name they gave the project. The companies’ own language emphasizes persistence, openness and interoperability. The distinction matters: the announcements show the direction of travel, while the live islands, creator tools and park connection show specific pieces of it in practice.

The comparison is a better test of the “metaverse” claim than scale figures alone. A large event or season can show that fans engaged with a particular Fortnite experience; it cannot, by itself, establish that Disney and Epic have built an open, persistent and interoperable ecosystem.
What players and creators should take from it
- If you want to play: Fortnite offers Disney-related islands and experiences, including Star Wars content. Availability and features depend on the particular island or promotion.
- If you want to make an experience: Disney’s Star Wars creator toolkit and the Simpsons’ planned UEFN toolkit indicate a route for developers to work with approved franchise material. The Simpsons toolkit’s launch status is not established by the cited June announcement.
- If you want the park connection: Smugglers Gambit links a Smugglers Run visit to Fortnite rewards. The attraction requires valid park admission, and account linking or a redeemable code determines how eligible guests receive rewards.
The project also has a strategic logic beyond putting familiar characters into a game. Disney brings globally recognized stories and physical destinations; Epic brings Fortnite’s player community, creator ecosystem and Unreal Engine. Disney’s games executive Sean Shoptaw put the audience rationale plainly in May 2026: “Gaming is where new generations of fans are discovering Disney.” Whether the partnership reaches its larger ambition depends on how these separate touchpoints develop into something genuinely connected and lasting.
