No—if you play Overwatch 2 on Windows PC, plugging in a controller does not give you console-style aim assist. The documented distinction is the platform and matchmaking lobby, not simply whether you use a controller. Console players grouped into some non-Competitive crossplay matches are a separate case.
What happens when you use a controller on PC?
For PC-native play, treat aim assist as unavailable, whether you use an Xbox, PlayStation, or other controller. YourSixGaming reported in an October 7, 2022 video that aim assist was absent in PC lobbies, including PC crossplay lobbies. A 2025 community feature request likewise describes the perceived lack of controller aim-assist support on PC, though it is not an official Blizzard statement.
In practical terms, connecting a controller changes your input device; it does not change the lobby’s platform rules. If you are looking for controller aim assist specifically, using a controller on PC should not be expected to provide it.
Does a console player keep aim assist when grouped with a PC friend?
That is different from a PC player choosing a controller. A March 2026 community report reproduces Blizzard’s crossplay wording: “If you play in a Crossplay game now, Aim Assist is enabled in all matches except Competitive.” On that wording, a console player may have aim assist in eligible non-Competitive crossplay games, including when playing with a PC friend.

The exception is explicit: Competitive matches are excluded. The quoted rule is about console players in crossplay, not a general promise of aim assist for controllers connected to PCs.
How the setups differ
| Setup | What the cited evidence says |
|---|---|
| Windows PC player using a controller | Aim assist is treated as unavailable. YourSixGaming, October 7, 2022; a community feature request, 2025. |
| Console player in crossplay, non-Competitive | Aim assist is enabled under Blizzard wording reproduced by a community report in March 2026; eligibility may depend on the crossplay match. |
| Console player in crossplay, Competitive | The reproduced Blizzard wording excludes Competitive. |
| Console player matched within the console pool | A 2022 community discussion describes a historical console pool with aim assist, but does not establish every current matchmaking case. |
What “PC lobby” and “console pool” mean
Older sources describe matchmaking as separate PC and console pools. In that terminology, a “PC lobby” is a match using the PC matchmaking group; a console player joining a PC friend may therefore be treated differently from a player matched within the console pool. A 2022 tournament rules document stated: “Aim Assist will automatically be disabled if the match is hosted in a PC Lobby.” These older labels help explain the distinction, but they should not be treated as a guarantee that current menus use the same wording.

Why controller aim assist may be absent on PC
The evidence ties the rule to platform and matchmaking rather than the controller itself. So if you plug a controller into a Windows PC and find no aim assist, changing controller brand or connection type is not established as a fix. The available evidence supports treating the limitation as a PC-lobby rule, not a setting you can enable just by selecting controller input.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How certain is the current rule?
The evidence spans different dates and types: an October 2022 video about PC lobbies, a 2022 community discussion and tournament rules document, a 2025 community feature request, and a March 2026 community report quoting Blizzard’s crossplay wording. No current first-party Blizzard support page was located that covers every combination of PC controller, console crossplay, and Competitive mode. For a match-specific answer, check Blizzard’s current patch notes and official crossplay guidance, especially if the wording or matchmaking rules change.
