There is no reliable evidence that Overwatch 2 runs universally better on Steam or Battle.net. The available side-by-side results are individual player reports from different PCs, and they point in opposite directions. If you are trying to solve an FPS or stutter problem, compare both launchers on your own system using the same settings and repeatable game sequence. Steam still requires a Battle.net account.
What the available comparisons show
Two player-posted comparisons illustrate why neither launcher can be declared the general winner. They use different hardware and test methods, so their results cannot be combined into a representative benchmark.
| Report | System and method | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Overwatch Forums, March 26, 2026 | Windows 11; Ryzen 9 7900X; Radeon 9070 XT; 32 GB DDR5; 1440p, low settings; AMD Adrenalin performance tracker. | Battle.net: about 281 average FPS and 202 FPS 1% lows. Steam: about 264 average FPS and 184 FPS 1% lows. The poster also observed higher CPU use on Steam, but that is their interpretation, not a verified cause. |
| Overwatch Forums, April 25, 2025 | Ryzen 7 5800X3D; RTX 4090; the poster compared the same replay using CapFrameX. | Steam: 577 average FPS, 355 FPS at the 1st percentile, and 222 FPS at the 0.1st percentile. Battle.net: 493 average FPS, 283 FPS at the 1st percentile, and 203 FPS at the 0.1st percentile. |
These are results reported by individual players, not controlled independent tests across a representative range of PCs. They disagree, and neither establishes what you should expect on your own machine.
Does Steam have different system requirements?
Steam lists Overwatch as free-to-play and publishes minimum and recommended PC specifications. Those are store requirements, not an FPS benchmark or a promise that the two launchers perform identically.

Check the Steam Overwatch listing for the current requirements; they can change. Meeting them does not guarantee a particular frame rate.
What you need to play on Steam
Steam does not replace Battle.net account access. The Steam listing says “Requires 3rd-Party Account: Battle.net Account.” Blizzard’s 2022 launch checklist also said a Battle.net account was required on every platform; for Steam specifically, the current listing is the more direct reference.

How to compare the launchers on your PC
A useful comparison controls the conditions that can change performance. Use a repeatable replay or the same game mode and route, and avoid changing settings between runs.
- Keep resolution, graphics settings, frame cap, driver version, background applications, and overlay state the same for each launcher.
- Use the same replay or repeatable gameplay sequence, and run each launcher under comparable conditions.
- Record average FPS as well as 1% and, if available, 0.1% lows. Note visible stutter or uneven frame pacing; a higher average alone does not describe every part of the experience.
- For context, record your CPU, GPU, resolution, settings, and measurement method. If results vary between runs, repeat the sequence before deciding that one launcher is consistently faster.
This is a practical way to assess your own PC, not evidence that either launcher is known to be faster. The conflicting player reports make matched conditions especially important.
