The PS5 must be online and either switched on or in Rest Mode. Portal can also stream some games without a PS5 through a separate feature, Cloud Streaming, which has its own subscription and eligibility requirements.
How PlayStation Portal Remote Play works
Portal is a screen and controller for your PS5 during Remote Play, not a standalone console. The PS5 runs the game, and the picture and sound stream over Wi-Fi to Portal while your inputs travel back to the console. You can use Portal on your home Wi-Fi or elsewhere with broadband Wi-Fi; the PS5 still needs to be online.

Sony’s current guidance calls for broadband Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. Those figures do not guarantee smooth play: Wi-Fi quality, network congestion and latency also affect how responsive the stream feels. Sony’s Portal requirements
How to set up Remote Play
- Connect the PS5 to the internet, update its system software, and sign in with the same PlayStation account you use on Portal.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you want to connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Connect Portal to Wi-Fi and use the same PlayStation account to pair it with the PS5. Start Remote Play from Portal.
The PS5 must remain switched on or in Rest Mode for Remote Play; a fully powered-off console cannot supply the game stream. Sony’s PS5 Remote Play setup instructions

Can you use Portal without your PS5?
Yes, in some circumstances, through Cloud Streaming—but that is different from Remote Play. Instead of streaming a game running on your own console, Portal streams an eligible game from Sony’s cloud service. Sony says the PS5 can be off or in use by another account during Cloud Streaming.
Cloud Streaming on Portal requires PlayStation Plus Premium, a supported region, broadband and an eligible game. Sony’s current guidance lists 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Game availability can change over time and by region, and the feature is not available for child accounts. Check Sony’s Cloud Streaming requirements and current availability for your region.

Portal Remote Play works with PS5 consoles, not PS4. Some games are incompatible, including games that require PS VR or PS VR2, or additional peripherals beyond the controllers Sony supports. Sony also excludes from Remote Play compatibility games that must be streamed on PS5 with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership. What to check if Remote Play will not connect
- Confirm the console is available: it must be online and powered on or in Rest Mode, not fully powered off.
- Check the account: Portal and PS5 need to use the same PlayStation account.
- Review the console settings: Remote Play must be enabled. For Rest Mode connections, both network and remote wake options must be enabled in the Rest Mode settings.
- Check the connection: Sony’s minimum is 5 Mbps for Portal Remote Play, but weak or congested Wi-Fi and high latency can still disrupt play.
- Verify the game: PS VR/PS VR2 titles and games requiring unsupported peripherals are not compatible, and Portal Remote Play does not connect to a PS4.
