Yes—at least in the iOS 14 situation Niantic documents, Pokémon GO needs Precise Location enabled to function correctly. Niantic’s instructions say to set Pokémon GO’s location access to While Using the App and turn on Precise Location. That is a platform- and version-specific support statement, not proof that every current iPhone and Android release presents identical requirements.
On both iOS and Android, GPS and Location Services are foundational. You normally need to grant Pokémon GO location permission for ordinary play, but you do not generally need to grant Always access just to play while the app is open. Always access is tied to the optional Adventure Sync feature, which records fitness progress while Pokémon GO is closed.

What “precise location” means in Pokémon GO
Location-based games use your device’s position to place your avatar on the in-game map, identify nearby PokéStops and Gyms, and determine whether movement and other map events can be registered. A phone can provide an approximate area or a more exact GPS position. The operating system’s “Precise Location” control determines whether the app can receive the more exact result.
Niantic’s clearest statement appears in its support article for an iOS 14 problem: “Since Pokémon GO is a location-based game, the app will not function correctly unless this setting is toggled on.” In that article, “this setting” is Precise Location. The wording is explicit for the iOS 14 case, but it should not be expanded into a guaranteed rule for every later iOS version or every Android phone.

Niantic’s broader supported-device guidance lists GPS and Location Services for both iOS and Android. Its permissions guidance recommends enabling Location to experience the full gameplay. Those pages establish that location access is a basic requirement, even though menu names and the exact precision controls depend on the operating system and its version.
Do you need location access all the time?
No, not for ordinary active play. When you open Pokémon GO and play on screen, choose the permission option that allows location while the app is in use. On iPhone, Niantic’s documented iOS 14 path uses While Using the App. Granting background access is a separate decision.
Always access matters for Adventure Sync. Niantic describes Adventure Sync as optional: it can track fitness progress while Pokémon GO is closed, and its background tracking requires location access set to Always. That requirement does not demonstrate that every player must give Pokémon GO background access for map play, catching, raids, or other foreground activity.
| Use case | Location choice to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing with Pokémon GO open | While Using the App (iOS wording) or the equivalent foreground permission | Provides location while you are actively playing without continuous background access. |
| Adventure Sync while the app is closed | Always, if you choose to use the feature | Niantic says background fitness tracking needs this permission. |
| Location denied or set to approximate when precise positioning is needed | Revisit the app’s Location permission and precision setting | The map may fail to update correctly or may not support the full gameplay experience. |
How to turn on precise location
iPhone and iPad
Labels can differ slightly by iOS release, but the controls are normally in the device’s Location Services list.

- Works with Nintendo Switch 2. C button not available
- Wireless controller with Bluetooth 5.0 technology
- Rechargeable lithium-ion battery: Up to 30 hours per charge
- Two mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons
- Embedded anti-friction rings for smooth thumbstick control
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security, then Location Services. Older iOS versions may label this area simply Privacy.
- Select Pokémon GO.
- Set location access to While Using the App.
- Turn on Precise Location.
- Return to Pokémon GO and restart the app if the map does not refresh immediately.
This is the sequence Niantic gives for the iOS 14 location-accuracy case. A current iOS release may place the controls differently, so use the Pokémon GO entry under Location Services rather than assuming every menu has the same wording.
Android phones and tablets
Niantic’s generic permissions path is to open device Settings, find Pokémon GO under Apps, open Permissions, and change the desired permission. Android manufacturers rename or rearrange these pages, so you may instead see App info, Permission manager, or a Location page reached from a privacy menu.
- Open Settings and choose Apps (or the equivalent app-management screen).
- Select Pokémon GO.
- Open Permissions, then Location.
- Allow location while the app is in use for normal foreground play.
- If your Android version presents an approximate-versus-precise choice, select the precise option when you want the most accurate map position.
- Check the phone’s Location Accuracy or equivalent system setting, described below, if the position still wanders.
The exact Android permission behavior is not established uniformly by Niantic’s iOS-specific article. Treat the permission screen on your own phone as authoritative, and consult the current support documentation for your Android version if a setting is missing.

Why Pokémon GO can show the wrong position
Weak GPS or network conditions
GPS reception can degrade indoors, between tall buildings, underground, or in places with heavy obstruction. Niantic’s GPS troubleshooting guidance also asks players to verify a strong internet connection and supported hardware. Switching between Wi‑Fi and cellular data can reveal whether one connection produces a more stable position.

Urban GPS drift
In dense city areas, reflected or blocked satellite signals can make the marker drift. Niantic specifically notes GPS drift near tall buildings. A drifting position in that environment is not, by itself, evidence that Pokémon GO has been given the wrong permission.
Android location-accuracy settings
For Android, Niantic recommends enabling Improve Location Accuracy. The label and location of this control vary by manufacturer and Android release. It generally combines available signals, such as GPS and nearby network information, to improve the phone’s estimate.
Mock-location tools
A “failed to detect location” error can be caused by mock-location settings. Niantic identifies mock locations as a possible reason the game cannot establish a usable position. If you have enabled a developer option or app that supplies simulated coordinates, disable it, return the device to its normal location mode, and restart Pokémon GO.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnsupported or malfunctioning hardware
Niantic’s supported-device guidance lists GPS and Location Services as requirements. A phone without the necessary hardware, with a disabled system sensor, or with a failing antenna may not provide a reliable position even when app permission is correct.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
Use these steps in order so you can separate a permission problem from a signal problem.
- Confirm Location Services are on. Check the device-wide Location Services switch, not only the Pokémon GO permission.
- Check Pokémon GO’s app permission. Set it to the foreground option equivalent to While Using the App and ensure precise access is enabled wherever the operating system offers that control.
- Test your connection. Switch between Wi‑Fi and cellular data. Keep the stronger, more stable connection and avoid testing in a location where the signal is intermittent.
- Move to an open area. Step away from tall buildings, enclosed structures, or underground spaces and wait for the GPS estimate to settle.
- Improve Android accuracy if applicable. Turn on Improve Location Accuracy and then reopen the game.
- Remove simulated-location settings. Disable mock-location tools or developer settings that feed the phone a fabricated position.
- Restart the app and device. Fully close Pokémon GO, reopen it, and restart the phone if the location remains unavailable.
- Verify support status. Check Niantic’s current supported-device information because operating-system and hardware requirements can change over time.
If the map is accurate outdoors but not indoors or beside tall buildings, the pattern points toward signal conditions rather than the precision toggle. If the game consistently fails to detect a location everywhere, review permissions, mock-location settings, device support, and connectivity before assuming a temporary GPS drift issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changes when precise location is disabled?
Niantic’s documented iOS 14 position is that Pokémon GO will not function correctly with Precise Location turned off. The support statement does not define one universal failure mode for every device. Depending on the phone and operating-system version, you might see a map that does not update, a position that is too coarse for nearby interactions, or an inability to establish a usable location.
Because current iOS and Android releases can expose different approximate-location controls, do not infer that a single symptom or menu is guaranteed across all phones. If the game behaves incorrectly, compare the Pokémon GO permission screen with the operating system’s current guidance and restore precise access for a controlled test.

Privacy and permission trade-offs
Location permission lets Pokémon GO use your device’s position for its location-based functions. Choosing While Using the App limits routine access to periods when you are actively playing. Choosing Always extends access to background use and is relevant when you deliberately enable Adventure Sync.
Niantic’s Safety FAQs say the company collects information to run and improve its products and says it does not sell adult or child user information to third parties. That statement is not a complete technical account of location retention, sharing, processing, or deletion. For those details, read the current privacy information and the permission disclosures shown on your device before selecting a broader access level.
A sensible privacy-first setup is to use precise location with foreground-only access for normal play, then enable Always only if the optional background tracking in Adventure Sync is worth that additional access to you. You can change the choice later in the device’s app-permission screen.

Which setting should you choose?
- You play with the app open: enable Location and choose the foreground option; on the iOS 14 configuration Niantic documents, also turn on Precise Location.
- You want Adventure Sync to count activity while Pokémon GO is closed: enable the feature and grant Always location access if your device requests it.
- You want the smallest practical permission: leave Adventure Sync off and use foreground-only access, while keeping precise positioning enabled where available.
- Your avatar is inaccurate: first check signal, connectivity, urban obstructions, Android’s location-accuracy setting, and mock-location controls.
- Your phone shows a different menu: follow the current permission screen for that operating-system version; Niantic’s iOS 14 instructions are not a universal map for every device.
The short answer is therefore conditional but practical: Pokémon GO needs usable location data, and Niantic explicitly requires Precise Location for the iOS 14 case it documents. Use precise foreground location for dependable active play, reserve Always for optional Adventure Sync, and troubleshoot signal and device settings before granting broader access.
