How much does Protection IV help against lava?
Protection reduces most damage types, including lava damage, by 4% per level, according to Minecraft Help. The Minecraft Wiki’s mechanics reference describes this reduction per armor piece and gives a full set of Protection IV armor as 64% overall general damage reduction: Protection mechanics.
That is damage reduction, not immunity. Armor and enchantment calculations also affect the damage you ultimately take, so the percentage alone does not establish how long you can survive in lava. An exact survival-time estimate would depend on edition, version, armor, health, and other effects.
Is Fire Protection better for lava?
Fire Protection is the targeted option. Microsoft’s Bedrock creator documentation describes it as reducing fire damage and burning time: Introduction to Enchantments. The Minecraft Wiki’s mechanics reference includes lava among the damage it covers and reports a 32% reduction for Fire Protection IV on one enchanted piece: Fire Protection mechanics. Treat that percentage as a mechanics-reference figure, not a universal promise across every edition and version.

Do Protection and Fire Protection cancel each other out?
No. They cannot normally be applied to the same armor piece, but that incompatibility does not mean enchantments on separate pieces cancel each other. You can choose broad Protection coverage for most pieces and use a Fire Protection piece when you want additional specialization, subject to the game’s mechanics for your edition and version.

If you want one broadly useful set, Protection is the general-purpose choice. If fire and lava are the specific hazards you expect, Fire Protection is the focused alternative. Neither enchantment makes lava safe to swim in, so do not rely on either as a guarantee against dying.
Microsoft’s player-facing enchantment reference describes Protection as reducing most damage by 4% per level and lists level IV as its maximum: All Enchantments in Minecraft. Exact lava calculations can differ by edition and version; the official references cited here do not provide a complete current Java-versus-Bedrock calculation.
