Original PS5 and PS5 Slim consoles support Wi‑Fi 6, not Wi‑Fi 6E’s 6 GHz band. They will work with a Wi‑Fi 6E router through its 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network. PS5 Pro supports Wi‑Fi 7 according to Sony, but Sony does not describe it simply as a Wi‑Fi 6E console. Your exact model and router configuration therefore matter more than the router’s badge.
The answer depends on which PS5 you own
| Console | Wi‑Fi 6 | Wi‑Fi 6E / 6 GHz | Wi‑Fi 7 | What to use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original PS5 (launch models) | Yes | No 6 GHz capability is listed in its certification | No | 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or Ethernet |
| PS5 Slim (CFI‑2000 family) | Yes | Treat as unsupported unless Sony publishes model-specific contrary documentation | No | 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or Ethernet |
| PS5 Pro (CFI‑7000 family) | Yes | Do not label it merely “Wi‑Fi 6E”; Sony advertises Wi‑Fi 7 | Yes | Compatible Wi‑Fi 7, Wi‑Fi 6, Wi‑Fi 5, or Ethernet |
Sony lists the original PS5’s wireless standard as IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, which corresponds to Wi‑Fi 6 capability: Sony’s PS5 FAQ. The Wi‑Fi Alliance certificate for the 2020 console lists 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz operation and Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED 6, with no 6 GHz capability: Wi‑Fi Alliance certificate.
For PS5 Pro, Sony’s current specification says the console supports Wi‑Fi 7 and is also compatible with Wi‑Fi 6 and Wi‑Fi 5 routers: PS5 Pro specifications. Sony also cautions that actual wireless performance depends on the router and network environment.
Wi‑Fi 6, Wi‑Fi 6E, and Wi‑Fi 7 are not the same thing
Wi‑Fi 6
Wi‑Fi 6 is the 802.11ax generation used primarily on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The original PS5 and PS5 Slim can use Wi‑Fi 6 networks, normally over 5 GHz when the signal is strong.

Wi‑Fi 6E
Wi‑Fi 6E extends Wi‑Fi 6 technology into the 6 GHz band. A Wi‑Fi 6E router can still serve older Wi‑Fi 5 and Wi‑Fi 6 clients on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, but a device needs compatible 6 GHz hardware to join the 6 GHz network. Google explains this distinction for Nest Wifi Pro: Google’s Wi‑Fi 6E documentation.
Wi‑Fi 7
Wi‑Fi 7 is a newer generation. PS5 Pro is officially marketed as Wi‑Fi 7 compatible; that does not mean every Wi‑Fi 7 feature behaves identically with every router, firmware version, security mode, or region.
Why a regular PS5 is not a 6 GHz client
The conclusion comes from hardware certification rather than the absence of a marketing logo. The 2020 PS5 certificate identifies 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz spectrum capabilities and does not list 6 GHz or Wi‑Fi CERTIFIED 6E. Base PS5 models should therefore be treated as Wi‑Fi 6 devices, not Wi‑Fi 6E devices. A Wi‑Fi 6E router cannot add a 6 GHz radio to the console.

If your PS5 cannot see the network
- Confirm that 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz is enabled; do not offer only a 6 GHz SSID.
- Separate the router’s bands into distinct SSIDs and try the 5 GHz name directly.
- If WPA3-only mode fails, try WPA2-Personal or a router’s mixed WPA2/WPA3 mode.
- Update router firmware and PS5 system software.
- Move the console nearer to the router or mesh access point.
- Test Ethernet to distinguish a wireless fault from an ISP or PlayStation Network problem.
- Keep IPv4 enabled. Sony says PS5 supports IPv6 but does not support IPv6-only network connections: Sony support guidance.
Does Wi‑Fi 6E improve PS5 gaming?
Online latency
A base PS5 does not receive a direct 6 GHz connection from a Wi‑Fi 6E router. A 6E upgrade can still help indirectly when phones, laptops, VR headsets, and other compatible devices move off a congested 5 GHz network. Ping in online games is also shaped by ISP routing, bufferbloat, wireless interference, and distance to the game server, so a newer Wi‑Fi label is not a latency guarantee.
Game downloads
Download speed depends on the PlayStation Network, your ISP and its peering, signal quality, router performance, storage activity, and competing household traffic. A 6E router does not make a regular PS5 a 6 GHz client.
Remote Play and local streaming
These workloads can benefit from a cleaner local network, especially when compatible devices use 6 GHz and leave more 5 GHz capacity available. A wired PS5 connection remains the more predictable option when cabling is practical.
Best Value
- Tri-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz; latest WiFi 6E supports 8-streams on tri-band simultaneously, up to 6.6Gbps speed
- AI QoS; satisfies all users' needs by automatically prioritizing data packets

- Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products
- Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences
What PS5 Pro’s Wi‑Fi 7 support means
PS5 Pro can use Wi‑Fi 7 networking and remains compatible with Wi‑Fi 6 and Wi‑Fi 5 routers, according to Sony. Sony describes potential benefits such as greater usable bandwidth, faster transfers, lower latency, and improved stability with a compatible router, but those are dependent on the complete network environment.
Do not assume that every PS5 Pro and Wi‑Fi 7 router will use every advertised feature, including Multi-Link Operation (MLO). If connection problems occur, Sony’s support guidance recommends testing PS5 Pro with MLO enabled and disabled: PlayStation connectivity support. Also test a 5 GHz-only connection, a 6 GHz connection if the router exposes one, and Ethernet before blaming Wi‑Fi 7 itself.
Should you buy a Wi‑Fi 6E router for PS5?
Wi‑Fi 6E makes sense when
- Your home has several 6E-capable phones, laptops, VR headsets, or newer computers.
- The 5 GHz band is crowded and compatible devices can move to 6 GHz.
- You want a modern mesh system for the whole household.
- You expect to add more 6 GHz devices soon.
It is a poor upgrade when
- The regular PS5 is the only important client.
- The console is close enough for Ethernet.
- Your current 5 GHz connection is stable and your internet plan is slower than the existing network can deliver.
- You expect a base PS5 to join a 6 GHz-only network.
Choose Ethernet first when
- The router is near the console.
- Consistent latency and download reliability matter more than wireless convenience.
- The console connects to a mesh satellite with a weak wireless backhaul.

| Google Nest Wifi Pro | $199.99 displayed configuration when observed | Wi‑Fi 6E, Google Home management, Matter and Thread; up to 2,200 square feet per router according to Google | Google smart-home users; it is not a modem and cannot mix with older Nest Wifi or Google Wifi points |
| TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro | Announced MSRP $399.99 for two-pack and $599.99 for three-pack | AXE5400 tri-band Wi‑Fi 6E, 6 GHz backhaul, 2.5G WAN/LAN; claimed coverage up to 5,500 square feet for two-pack | Larger homes and multi-gigabit networks; unnecessary for a single regular PS5 on basic broadband |
Practical fixes before replacing the router
- Use Ethernet if a cable route is practical.
- Otherwise connect the console to a strong 5 GHz SSID.
- Improve router or mesh-node placement and avoid enclosing the equipment.
- Separate SSIDs while diagnosing band-steering problems.
- Update router firmware and PS5 system software.
- Keep IPv4 enabled and avoid IPv6-only router configurations.
- For mesh, prefer wired backhaul where possible; a wireless satellite adds backhaul overhead.
Bottom line
A Wi‑Fi 6E router can serve every PS5 model, but that does not mean every PS5 can use 6 GHz. Original PS5 and PS5 Slim consoles are Wi‑Fi 6 clients that should use 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or Ethernet. PS5 Pro adds officially advertised Wi‑Fi 7 support, with results dependent on the specific router and setup. Buy 6E for a broader household upgrade, not to unlock a hidden 6 GHz mode on a regular PS5.
