Does PSVR2 Support HDR? PS5 and PC Explained

PSVR2 supports HDR on PS5, but not through Sony’s official PC adapter. The TV does not need HDR for cinematic-mode video in the headset.

Yes—PSVR2 supports HDR when connected to a PS5, including in cinematic mode. HDR output is not supported through Sony’s official PSVR2 PC adapter, so the answer depends on which platform you use.

How HDR works on PSVR2

PSVR2 has two OLED displays, each with a resolution of 2,000 × 2,040 pixels. Sony describes the headset as delivering “4K HDR” visuals; that refers to the combined display format, not a 4K image in each eye. Sony’s specifications also list 90 Hz and 120 Hz refresh rates and an approximately 110-degree field of view.

The headset and PS5 can output HDR, but the content must support it too. A game or app that renders in SDR does not become HDR merely because it is running on an HDR-capable headset. HDR behavior can also differ between a game’s flat-screen and VR modes, so check the individual title’s information or display settings when available. Sony’s product page describes HDR as a supported visual feature, not a guarantee that every title uses it.

How to set HDR for PSVR2 cinematic mode

For non-VR PS5 games, video and other flat-screen content viewed on a virtual screen, Sony provides a specific HDR output setting:

  1. On PS5, open Settings.
  2. Select Accessories, then PlayStation VR2.
  3. Choose Cinematic mode.
  4. Open Video Output for Cinematic Mode.
  5. Set HDR output.

This is Sony’s documented menu path in its PSVR2 video input and output support guide. The setting controls cinematic-mode output; games and apps may handle HDR differently.

Does the TV need HDR for PSVR2?

No. Sony says the connected TV does not need HDR support for HDR video to appear in the PSVR2 headset in cinematic mode. The headset is the display you look through; the TV’s social-screen image is a separate output and may have different capabilities. Sony says the PS5 needs to be connected to a TV or monitor for initial setup, but a screen may not be needed for subsequent gameplay. Sony’s video guide explains the HDR requirement, and its technical specifications cover setup.

Does PSVR2 support HDR on PC?

No—not through Sony’s official adapter and Windows PC setup. Sony lists HDR output as unavailable on PC, alongside eye tracking, headset feedback and adaptive triggers. Full PSVR2 Sense controller haptics are also unavailable, although basic controller vibration remains. See Sony’s PS5-versus-PC feature comparison and PC support guide.

The official PC setup uses the adapter, Steam, SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 app. It also requires a DisplayPort 1.4 cable connected directly to a compatible PC DisplayPort output; Sony says DisplayPort over USB-C is not compatible with the adapter. These connection requirements do not change the HDR limitation. If PC access to SteamVR is the priority, the adapter can expand what the headset can run, but it does not provide the PS5 feature set or HDR output.

Why can PSVR2 look vivid without HDR?

OLED panels can show deep blacks and strong contrast even when the incoming image is SDR. That can make a scene look rich or “HDR-like,” but appearance alone does not confirm that an HDR signal or HDR rendering pipeline is active. HDR requires support throughout the platform and content path; OLED describes the display technology, not the signal format. Sony’s position for its official PC setup remains that HDR output is unsupported.

What to check if PSVR2 HDR is not working

  1. Confirm the platform. HDR output is supported on PS5, not through Sony’s official PC adapter.
  2. Check the content. Verify that the particular game or video app supports HDR. Support in a game’s flat-screen mode does not establish identical support in its VR mode.
  3. Recheck cinematic-mode output. On PS5, go to Settings → Accessories → PlayStation VR2 → Cinematic mode → Video Output for Cinematic Mode → HDR output.
  4. Update and reconnect. Install available PS5 system and headset software updates, then restart the PS5 and headset and reconnect the headset cable. Sony recommends keeping PSVR2 and the PS5 up to date in its PSVR2 product and support information.
  5. Test another HDR-capable title or app. If HDR is still unavailable or the image looks wrong, check the title’s own guidance and PS5 video-output settings. There is no single appearance or calibration result that proves every app is outputting HDR.
