Best gaming PC in 2023: WePC’s Build, Prebuilts and What Still Holds Up

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WePC’s “best gaming PC” was a value-focused 2023 recommendation, not the fastest computer available. Its core combination was an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, supported by 16GB of DDR4 memory and a 1TB NVMe SSD, with a target system budget of about $1,500. That made sense for high-refresh 1080p and 1440p gaming at the time. In 2026, however, the page is best read as a historical build guide: the AM4 platform, 8GB graphics memory and several component choices need substantial qualification before you copy them.

What WePC actually recommended

WePC’s page was updated on March 16, 2023, although parts of it still call the machine the “Best Gaming PC in 2022.” The “best” label meant balanced price-to-performance around a $1,500 system budget, not maximum specifications or a universal recommendation for every resolution.

Component WePC selection Assessment
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Strong 2023 gaming processor; now an older AM4 platform.
CPU cooler Phanteks Glacier One 240MPH D-RGB Capable 240mm liquid cooler, but elaborate for a 65W-class CPU.
Motherboard ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi) Feature-rich with PCIe 4.0 and Wi-Fi, potentially excessive for this processor.
Memory Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB (2×8GB) DDR4-3600 Normal for 2023; 32GB is a more comfortable capacity for a new system now.
GPU MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8GB Good 1440p-class 2023 card, but its age and 8GB VRAM constrain newer games.
SSD Samsung 980 1TB NVMe Usable capacity and contemporary performance for the period.
Case Phanteks Eclipse P360A Mesh-front, airflow-oriented chassis.
Power supply EVGA 600 BQ Potentially adequate for the listed parts, but model age, quality tier and upgrade headroom matter.

WePC’s source for the list, budget target and stated testing process is its original build guide. The approximately $1,500 figure is a target for the computer, not a verified current checkout total or a complete setup including a monitor, Windows, peripherals, tax and shipping.

What performance was this build targeting?

In its 2023 context, the parts were aimed at high-refresh 1080p and mainstream 1440p gaming, including esports and demanding single-player games. There is no universal frame-rate guarantee: results vary with the game, graphics preset, ray tracing, upscaling, drivers and monitor resolution. Treat it as a balanced raster-gaming system rather than a 4K or uncompromising ray-tracing machine.

Component-by-component analysis

Ryzen 5 5600X

The six-core, 12-thread Ryzen 5 5600X has a 65W TDP and boost clock up to 4.6GHz. It was an effective gaming choice in 2023 and remains serviceable when obtained cheaply as part of an existing AM4 system. A new build should compare its total platform cost with newer CPU sockets and memory, especially for competitive high-refresh play or simulation games that benefit from stronger single-thread performance.

RTX 3060 Ti

The listed MSI card has 8GB of VRAM. WePC’s prose incorrectly refers to 12GB; that is a material specification error. The card was a strong 30-series value option for 1080p and 1440p, but it is now a previous-generation product. Eight gigabytes can force lower textures or other compromises in some newer, texture-heavy or ray-traced games. Buying one new at an inflated price would make little sense; used, clearance and refurbished value depends on the exact price, condition and warranty.

Cooler: capable, but not automatically good value

A 240mm liquid cooler can keep the 5600X quiet and leaves room for experimentation with Precision Boost Overdrive, but the chip does not require it. A quality tower air cooler is usually simpler and cheaper. Liquid cooling also adds a pump and radiator that can fail over long ownership, requires sensible radiator placement and may divert money that would matter more for the GPU, memory or storage.

Motherboard: X570 versus B550

The ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus Wi-Fi supplies PCIe 4.0, wireless networking and overclocking support. Those features are legitimate, but a B550 board can often provide what a gaming build needs for less money. X570 is easier to justify when you need additional PCIe connectivity or expansion rather than simply because it is the higher chipset.

Memory: 16GB then, 32GB now

Two 8GB DDR4-3600 modules used dual-channel operation and were a sensible 2023 recommendation. For a new computer, 32GB is the more comfortable baseline when you keep browsers and launchers open, stream, use mods or run productivity software. Check the board’s memory support and BIOS, and prefer a matched two-DIMM kit unless you have a reason to populate four slots.

SSD and case

A 1TB NVMe drive was practical for the period, but modern game installs can fill it quickly. The P360A’s mesh front is a sound airflow choice; fan layout and dust maintenance matter more than its RGB lighting.

Power supply

WePC described the semi-modular, Bronze-rated EVGA 600 BQ as sufficient for the listed RTX 3060 Ti system. Wattage is only one part of the decision. A healthy, genuine unit with the correct connectors may run this exact configuration, but a new build should choose a current, reputable PSU with appropriate transient headroom, warranty support and connectors for any planned GPU upgrade. Do not assume 600W remains suitable after installing a substantially more powerful card.

Errors and ambiguities in the original page

  • VRAM: the narrative says 12GB, while the listed RTX 3060 Ti is an 8GB model.
  • Samsung 980 speeds: passages report conflicting read/write figures and ordering. Verify the exact drive model and manufacturer specification instead of repeating those numbers.
  • Versioning: a March 2023 update retains a “Best Gaming PC in 2022” heading.
  • Total price: the page gives an approximately $1,500 target, not a reliable archived full-build total.
  • Benchmarks: WePC says it builds, checks compatibility, benchmarks games and workloads, and tests overclocking in-house, but the searchable page does not provide a comprehensive game-by-game table with settings, averages and 1% lows. Those are WePC’s claims, not independent verification.

Build it yourself or buy a prebuilt?

Self-build Prebuilt
Usually better component-level value and full control over the PSU, board, cooler, case and storage. Assembly, Windows installation and initial troubleshooting are handled for you.
Easier to select standard parts and upgrade them later. One vendor owns the initial support and warranty process.
You handle compatibility checks, assembly and diagnosis. OEM boards, power supplies or cases may limit upgrades, so inspect the exact specification.

WePC generally favors self-building for value while acknowledging that testing, software setup and convenience can justify a prebuilt. The right choice depends on whether your time and support requirements are worth the assembly premium.

The prebuilt alternatives WePC listed

Corsair Vengeance a7200

The historical Corsair configuration is unusually transparent: Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3060 Ti, 16GB DDR4-3200, 1TB NVMe storage, an MSI B550 motherboard, 240mm Corsair liquid cooler, 750W 80 Plus Gold PSU, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, Windows 10 Home and a two-year warranty. See the manufacturer product page. It is a legacy model; availability, condition and warranty must be confirmed, and a displayed $24.99 signal on the page is associated with accessories rather than a verified complete-PC price.

ASUS ROG Strix G35CZ and CyberPowerPC Gamer Xtreme

These were historical alternatives, not evergreen model recommendations. Exact graphics cards, motherboards, power supplies, operating systems, prices and stock change by region and date. Do not buy a listing based only on its family name.

How to adapt the idea for a 2026 purchase

  1. Set the display target: choose 1080p, 1440p or 4K, then match the GPU to the monitor’s refresh rate.
  2. Prioritize the GPU: consider current raster performance, ray tracing, upscaling support and VRAM rather than the product name alone.
  3. Choose the platform: AM4/DDR4 can be a bargain when buying used or reusing parts; a current socket and DDR5 generally offer more upgrade runway for a new system.
  4. Start at 32GB memory: reduce capacity only when the budget is exceptionally constrained.
  5. Budget storage realistically: 1TB works as an entry point, but leave room for a second drive or a larger primary SSD.
  6. Specify the PSU: verify the exact model, warranty, connectors and future-GPU headroom.
  7. Price the complete system: include Windows, monitor, peripherals, tax, shipping, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth hardware and any extra fans.
  8. Check current evidence: use reproducible tests listing game, resolution, preset, ray tracing, upscaling, average FPS, 1% lows, driver and test date. Do not treat the old WePC list as a current parts list.

Prebuilt buyer checklist

  • Exact desktop CPU and GPU model, including VRAM.
  • Whether the graphics card is a standard retail design or proprietary OEM part.
  • RAM capacity, speed and one- versus two-channel configuration.
  • SSD model or at least capacity, plus a vacant M.2 or SATA slot.
  • Motherboard form factor and whether replacement parts are standard.
  • PSU brand, model, wattage, efficiency certification, connectors and warranty.
  • Cooler type, intake/exhaust layout and expected fan noise.
  • Windows activation, return policy, shipping-damage procedure and warranty length.
  • Current stock and delivery estimate for your country.

Current purchasing routes

For a contemporary prebuilt, CyberPowerPC’s gaming-PC catalog and its deals and customization page show newer CPU, GPU and DDR5 configurations. Prices, components and shipping dates are volatile, so compare the exact configuration at checkout. Inspect the motherboard, PSU, cooler and case rather than relying on the vendor name alone.

Verdict

WePC’s Ryzen 5 5600X/RTX 3060 Ti machine was a reasonable value-oriented 2023 gaming build, particularly for 1080p high refresh and 1440p play. Its lasting value is as a clearly documented historical reference. In 2026, copy the decision framework—not the exact shopping list: favor a current platform, 32GB of memory, a modern GPU with suitable VRAM, a reputable current PSU and a verified total price.
