Not conclusively, according to Nintendo’s published support pages. Nintendo explains that a full amiibo reset erases data stored on the figure, but its support guidance does not say whether Spirits already collected in a game’s own save data are deleted or preserved. If you are trying to clear only the figure’s game data, use Delete Game Data rather than Reset amiibo. A full reset erases all data on the figure—including game, user, and nickname data—and Nintendo warns that the deletion cannot be undone.
What “resetting an amiibo” can mean
The phrase reset amiibo covers two different kinds of operation:

- A system-level reset in console settings, which clears data stored on the physical figure.
- A game-specific reset performed inside a particular game, which may affect only that game’s amiibo-related state.
Nintendo documents these operations separately. On Nintendo Switch 2, the amiibo settings offer Delete Game Data and Reset amiibo. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, an in-game reset returns an amiibo fighter to its pre-training state but leaves some identifying settings intact. The results should not be treated as interchangeable across consoles or games.

Does a reset remove Spirits?
Nintendo’s official support material reviewed for this question does not mention Spirits specifically. It does not directly confirm whether a Spirit collection in a game’s own save file is erased, retained, or otherwise changed when you reset the figure.
That means the accurate answer is an evidence-based limitation: Nintendo confirms that a figure reset deletes amiibo data, but does not publish a Spirit-specific result. Do not assume that a full figure reset definitely deletes your Spirits, and do not assume that it definitely protects them. The documents describe what happens to the amiibo, not the complete save-data behavior of every compatible game.
The distinction matters because an amiibo can carry game data while a game can also maintain its own progression and collection records. A scan may unlock or use content without writing the same information to the figure. Without a game-specific statement from Nintendo, the effect on Spirits cannot be stated more broadly than the documentation allows.

What each reset option erases

For the Switch 2 options, Nintendo’s wording is about data on the figure. The support page does not describe a command to erase the console’s game save or a Spirit collection. That is why a definitive yes-or-no claim about Spirits would go beyond the published evidence.
How to reset an amiibo on Nintendo Switch 2
Use these steps when the figure itself must be changed. Check Nintendo’s current instructions for your exact console before starting, because the NFC touchpoint is located differently on different hardware. Nintendo’s Switch 2 amiibo reset instructions
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select amiibo.
- Choose Delete Game Data if you want to remove only the game data saved to the figure. Choose Reset amiibo if you intend to erase all data stored on it.
- Hold the amiibo figure against the controller’s NFC touchpoint when the system prompts you. Keep it in place until the console reads it.
- Review the deletion notice carefully. Confirm only after checking that you selected the intended operation.
Nintendo states that once the data has been deleted, it cannot be restored. If you are uncertain whether you need a game-data deletion or a complete reset, stop at the confirmation screen and verify the option rather than proceeding on the assumption that the two commands are equivalent.

When Delete Game Data is the safer choice
Select Delete Game Data when your goal is to remove the game-specific information written to the figure—for example, before using that figure with another read/write-compatible game—while avoiding the broader deletion of user and nickname information. Nintendo’s instructions still do not provide a Spirit-specific guarantee, but this option has the narrower stated scope.

When Reset amiibo is appropriate
Use Reset amiibo only when you deliberately want the figure returned to an entirely empty data state. It removes all data Nintendo identifies on the page: game data, user data, and nickname data. Because the operation is irreversible, record any nickname or setup details you may want to recreate before confirming.
Why one amiibo cannot hold unlimited game saves
Nintendo’s amiibo FAQ says that a single amiibo can save data for only one game at a time. Before using it with another game that can read and write amiibo data, you must erase the existing game data from the figure. This limitation is about the storage on the amiibo, not a published statement about deleting a game’s complete save file or Spirit inventory.

Other games may use amiibo differently. Nintendo describes Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as saving data to the amiibo, while some games provide bonus content merely by scanning one. Consequently, the same physical reset can have different practical consequences depending on the game that last wrote to the figure.

This is a narrower, game-specific behavior. It is not evidence that every system-level reset preserves those fields, nor does it answer what happens to Spirits in another game or on another console. Use it only for the Wii U operation Nintendo describes.

A practical decision guide before you confirm
- You want to use the figure with another writable game: identify the existing game data and choose the narrowest deletion option available on your console.
- You want a completely blank figure: choose the full reset, but expect all stored game, user, and nickname data to be erased permanently.
- You are worried about a Spirit collection: do not rely on a guess. Nintendo’s cited pages do not specify the Spirit outcome, so avoid resetting until you have checked the game’s own support information or are prepared for an unconfirmed result.
- You are resetting an amiibo inside a game: follow that game’s instructions and read exactly which attributes it says will change. A game-specific reset is not automatically the same as the console’s system-settings reset.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing figure data with console save data
The words “amiibo data” can sound like they include every item associated with the character. Nintendo’s documentation instead describes data stored on the physical figure and separately describes game features triggered by scanning. Treat those as different storage locations unless the game’s own documentation says otherwise.
Choosing Reset amiibo when only game data needs clearing
On Switch 2, the two commands are presented as separate choices for a reason. If the objective is limited to one game’s data on the figure, Delete Game Data is the less destructive choice described by Nintendo. A full reset also removes user and nickname data.
Assuming a Wii U result applies everywhere
The Wii U guide’s promise that nickname, owner Mii, and character color remain applies to the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U in-game reset. It does not establish the behavior of Switch 2’s system-level reset or another game’s reset command.

Nintendo explicitly warns that deleted amiibo data cannot be restored. Keep the figure on the NFC touchpoint only as instructed, read the final confirmation, and cancel if the selected operation is broader than intended.
Where to verify platform-specific behavior
For general compatibility, storage, and one-game-at-a-time rules, consult Nintendo’s Answers to Top amiibo Questions. The most defensible conclusion remains limited but useful: a full reset definitely clears the figure’s stored data; a game-data deletion is narrower; and Nintendo’s published instructions do not establish whether Spirits in a game save are removed. Choose the operation based on what you intend to erase, and do not treat “reset amiibo” as a confirmed Spirit-deletion command.
