Yes—but the viral shorthand is misleading. Roblox began rolling out a worldwide age-check requirement for its communication features on January 7, 2026, wherever chat is available. Users must complete an age check before using features such as Experience chat, Voice chat, Friends-related communication, Direct chat, and Party chat.
Roblox does not categorically require every user to submit a selfie or ID merely to open Roblox or play every available game. Users who decline an age check may still receive access to some games, although chat remains unavailable and content access may be more limited. The practical rule is: you need an age check to communicate, not necessarily to play.
Current as of June 2026: Roblox’s age-check rollout began as a chat-access policy and is now also being used as part of the company’s newer Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, and broader age-based account structure. Exact availability can vary by region, age group, parental controls, and the individual Roblox experience.

So, saying Roblox now requires age checks globally for chat is broadly accurate. Saying that every Roblox user everywhere must verify their age to play Roblox is not.
What does an age check unlock?
Roblox’s current support documentation says that users must successfully complete an age check before using several communication features. These include:
- Experience chat, the text-chat system used within games;
- Voice chat, where available and where the user is old enough;
- Friends and related communication features;
- Direct chat and Party chat, subject to age, parental, and regional controls;
- Trusted Friends communication;
- communication with fewer ordinary text filters or enhanced communication with trusted friends.
Roblox’s creator-facing announcement says that users who have not completed an age check cannot use Experience, Party, Direct, or Voice chat. The exact experience-level behavior can differ: some games may rely heavily on chat, while others may use preset messages, menus, or game-specific systems instead. Roblox’s creator announcement provides the platform-level rule.
Phone verification is no longer a valid way to obtain Voice Chat access under the new system. Completing a phone check will not substitute for the required age check. Roblox’s current chat instructions explain the available requirements.
Can you still play Roblox without an age check?
Often, yes—but without chat. Roblox describes age checks as optional if a user does not want features that require them. In most regions, an account that has not completed an age check may receive transition access to games, but the user cannot communicate through Roblox chat.
That distinction matters because chat is not merely decorative in every experience. A cooperative game may depend on players coordinating through text or voice. In that situation, an unverified player may be able to enter the game but lose a central part of how it is designed to be played. The result depends on the individual experience, so it would be too broad to say that every game becomes unplayable.
From May and June 2026 onward, Roblox also began using age-check outcomes for broader account categories and content access. A user who declines an age check may therefore face more than a chat restriction, depending on the region and account transition rules. Roblox’s age-estimation information and its documentation for Roblox Kids and Roblox Select describe the current framework.
What is Roblox actually checking?
The term age verification is common, but it describes two different processes. Roblox primarily calls the selfie route Facial Age Estimation. It estimates an age range or age group from a selfie-style video; it does not necessarily confirm a precise birthday.
Users aged 13 and older can instead choose government-ID verification. That is a different process because it compares a government-issued identity document with a selfie and can involve additional identity and fraud-prevention processing.
Option 1: Facial Age Estimation
To complete the selfie-based check:
- Log in to Roblox.
- Open Settings.
- On desktop, select the gear icon in the upper-right corner. On mobile, select More (…) in the lower-right corner and then choose Settings.
- Open Account Info.
- Under Age Group, select Continue with selfie.
- Allow camera access and follow the on-screen instructions.
The device needs a working camera. The system analyzes facial images and video to estimate an age band. It is not a conventional identity check and does not establish that the person is the account holder simply because the camera produced an age estimate. Option 2: Government-ID verification
ID verification is available to users aged 13 and older. The general process is:

- Under the birthday field, select Continue beside Use an ID to verify your birthday.
- Allow camera access.
- Scan a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or residency card.
- Complete the selfie check so the person can be compared with the document.
- Return to Roblox and wait for the result, which may take several minutes.
Roblox says customer support cannot manually verify an ID or remove an existing verification. If the result is unsuccessful, use the correction or alternative process offered in the account rather than repeatedly submitting documents or another person’s face. The age-check support page contains the relevant limitations.

What should parents do?
A parent who wants to manage a child’s account should first create and link a parent account. When completing Facial Age Estimation for the child’s account, the child should be in front of the camera. The parent should not perform the selfie check on the child’s behalf using the parent’s own face.
A linked parent can correct a child’s birthday through Settings → Parental Controls, but Roblox says this correction can generally be made only once. Parents should therefore check which account is open and review the resulting age group before enabling communication. How Roblox groups users for communication
Roblox uses two related but different systems: narrower chat age bands and broader account categories. They should not be treated as interchangeable.
Chat age bands
Roblox’s chat materials describe age groups including:
- under 9;
- 9–12;
- 13–15;
- 16–17;
- 18–20;
- 21 and older.
The exact bands and how they operate can vary by product and region. In general, Roblox is trying to let users communicate with people in their own or similar age groups rather than placing every child, teenager, and adult in one chat pool.
Roblox says the system is designed to restrict communication between adults and children younger than 16, subject to the platform’s specific rules and Trusted Friends exceptions. Users under 9 have Experience chat turned off by default and need parental consent to enable it. Users under 16 require parental consent for Direct chat under Roblox’s current support documentation. Voice Chat is limited to age-checked users aged 13 or older in supported regions.
These are age-based controls, not a guarantee that every account is being used by the person who completed the check. Roblox also uses behavioral signals and may request another check if account activity appears inconsistent with the recorded age. The ages and rollout details may vary by region. Roblox says accounts without an age check may receive transition access to games, but they cannot use Roblox chat. The account categories are therefore an additional layer on top of the chat age bands, not a replacement for them.
What are Trusted Friends?
Trusted Friends are not the same as ordinary Roblox friends. A normal friend request does not automatically override age-based communication limits. Trusted Friends require a separate, mutual opt-in process, and eligibility depends on age and region.

- Users under 13 need parental approval for each Trusted Friend.
- Teens aged 13–17 may use real-life connection methods such as contact importing, live QR-code scanning, or invitation links, depending on availability.
- Adults can add other adults through mutual opt-in.
- An adult adding a teen is limited to methods intended to establish a real-world connection.
Roblox says Trusted Friends conversations remain subject to safety monitoring, including monitoring for critical harms such as grooming. Enhanced or lower-filter communication is therefore not private, unrestricted communication.

No. Roblox’s enhanced communication features may reduce ordinary text filtering in certain trusted-friend contexts, but unfiltered does not mean unmoderated.
Roblox says links and rule-breaking content remain blocked, its Community Standards continue to apply, and conversations remain monitored for safety. Roblox also says chat is monitored rather than end-to-end encrypted, image and video sharing are prohibited, and text and voice filtering remain part of the safety system. The platform’s explanation of voice chat and enhanced text communication describes these limits.
What if Roblox assigns the wrong age?
Age estimation is not infallible. Roblox provides different correction paths depending on the error and the account’s age:
- Estimated under 13 when the user is actually 13 or older: the user can generally use ID verification to establish the appropriate age information.
- Child placed in the wrong group: a linked parent can use the Parental Controls correction route, generally once.
- User incorrectly placed in the 18+ group: Roblox provides an age-change process that can undo the age-checked status in applicable cases.
- Self-reported over-13 user estimated under 13: Roblox provides a 48-hour grace period before the new age group is officially applied. The user can also accept the new result immediately.
- Facial Age Estimation cannot determine an age: Roblox says the user will need to complete ID verification. That fallback is unavailable to users under 13.
- Unexpected re-check: Roblox may ask for another check when behavioral signals suggest that the account’s recorded age does not match observed activity.
Do not try to correct an error by putting a parent, sibling, or friend in front of the camera. That can assign the account to the wrong age group and create additional problems. Start with the correction route shown in the account and consult Roblox’s age-check troubleshooting information.

The wrong person completed the selfie check
If a parent completed the check on a child’s account, the result may reflect the parent’s age rather than the child’s. Stop submitting additional faces and use the linked-parent correction process or the applicable age-change process. Roblox specifically instructs parents to keep the child in front of the camera during the child’s check.
The camera will not produce an estimate
Check that Roblox or the browser has camera permission, that the lens is unobstructed, and that the device can provide a clear image under the on-screen conditions. If the system still cannot determine an age, Roblox’s documented fallback is ID verification. Because ID verification is for users aged 13 and older, a younger child may need a linked parent to use the available account-correction route instead.
Voice Chat still does not appear after the age check
An age check alone does not guarantee that every communication feature will appear. Check:
- the account’s assigned age group;
- whether the user is at least 13 for Voice Chat;
- parental-consent settings, especially for younger users;
- whether Voice Chat is available in the user’s region;
- whether the particular experience supports Voice Chat;
- whether Roblox has requested a new age check or applied an account restriction.
Also remember that phone verification no longer unlocks Voice Chat under the current rules.
Friends are in different age groups
Ordinary friendship does not override Roblox’s age-based communication limits. The users may need to communicate within their permitted age groups, or—if eligible—use Trusted Friends. Trusted Friends can require parental approval, a real-world connection method, and mutual consent.

Can a VPN bypass Roblox’s age check?
Roblox told the U.K. communications regulator Ofcom that the rollout is global and that a VPN cannot be used to switch territories to evade the age check. This is Roblox’s stated position, not an independently tested guarantee for every network configuration. A VPN is not a legitimate substitute for the required age check. What happens to the selfie, ID, and biometric data?
This is one of the most important distinctions in the policy. Roblox and Persona describe different handling for selfie-only age estimation and ID-based identity verification.
Roblox’s position on Facial Age Estimation
Roblox says Facial Age Estimation uses a selfie-style video to estimate an age range, that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data from this facial age-estimation process, and that the images and video are deleted after processing. Roblox also says it does not sell users’ image data. These are statements from Roblox’s published documentation, not an independent audit of every operational data flow.
Persona’s role and the ID process
Persona’s Roblox-specific privacy policy says it processes age-assurance data on Roblox’s behalf. Persona’s general processor policy distinguishes between two broad situations:
- Selfie-only age estimation: Persona says Age Estimation Scan Data is deleted once an outcome has been determined.
- ID plus selfie identity verification: Identity Scan Data may be retained longer when needed to detect, investigate, or prevent fraud, subject to the customer’s instructions and applicable disclosures.
Persona says it does not sell the data or use it for marketing or model training. Roblox’s facial-media notice separately says Persona may delete biometric data within 30 days after collection for identity verification unless the law requires longer retention.
The safest summary is not that all face data is deleted instantly. A more precise reading is:
Roblox says selfie-only age-estimation images and video are deleted after processing. ID verification involves separate document and biometric-data rules, with possible retention for fraud prevention or legal reasons.

Users who want to chat must weigh that data-processing burden against the benefit of communication access. Relevant documents include Roblox’s facial-media capture notice, privacy policy, and Persona’s Roblox-specific policy and processor policy.
How accurate is Roblox’s age estimation?
Roblox says its models achieved a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18, based on testing by the U.K. Age Check Certification Scheme and other third-party laboratory testing.
That figure needs careful interpretation:
- It is an average absolute error, not a promise that every user will be placed within 1.4 years of their actual age.
- It does not mean the system identifies a precise birthday.
- It does not by itself demonstrate equal performance across skin tones, genders, lighting conditions, disabilities, camera quality, or every geographic population.
- The public materials reviewed for this article do not provide the complete test dataset, demographic breakdown, threshold settings, or full independent methodology.
In practice, lighting, camera quality, facial presentation, and the boundary between age groups may affect the result. Roblox’s correction options are therefore an important part of the system, particularly for children who are incorrectly placed into a different group.

- placing users into more age-appropriate chat groups;
- providing age-appropriate content catalogs and parental controls;
- supporting age-based account experiences such as Roblox Kids and Roblox Select;
- building future age-based collaboration and communication tools.
The company also says its chat systems are monitored, that communication is not encrypted end to end, and that age checks are only one part of a larger safety system. Roblox has acknowledged that no age-assurance system is foolproof. An age band does not prove identity, guarantee that the account is being used by the person who completed the check, prevent account sharing, or eliminate grooming and other harmful behavior.
The rollout also sits within broader regulatory and legal pressure surrounding child safety online. For example, a proposed Nevada consent judgment reviewed in connection with Roblox would require age-assurance procedures beyond self-reported age for users accessing chat, behavioral monitoring, age-based controls, and limits on adult-to-under-16 communication except in specified Trusted Friends situations. However, the public record does not establish that one law or lawsuit alone caused the global January rollout. Roblox presented the change as a company-wide safety initiative operating within a wider regulatory environment.

What has been the effect on Roblox users and the business?
The immediate trade-off is clear: users who do not complete an age check lose communication access, while users who do complete one may find that fewer friends are available to chat until those friends also complete the process.
Roblox reported that 45% of its 144 million global daily active users had completed an age check by January 31, 2026. By the end of the first quarter, the company reported that the figure had reached 51% of global daily active users, and said that non-age-checked users could not communicate. These are company-reported adoption figures, not an independent audit of every account or user.
Roblox also acknowledged that the transition reduced the proportion of users able to communicate, diluted communication for users who had completed checks because fewer people were available to chat, slowed user acquisition, and created short-term engagement and bookings headwinds. The company discussed those effects in its Q1 2026 earnings transcript and shareholder letter.
What the headline gets wrong
- Not every Roblox activity requires an age check: the requirement is tied primarily to communication, although age-check results now also influence newer content and account systems.
- It is not simply facial recognition: the main route is Facial Age Estimation, while ID verification is an alternative for users aged 13 and older.
- A selfie does not necessarily verify identity: selfie-only processing estimates an age range; it does not confirm a precise birthday or prove account ownership.
- The change is broader than in-game text chat: Experience, Voice, Friends-related, Direct, Party, Trusted Friends, and enhanced communication features can be affected.
- Age-checked users cannot automatically talk to anyone: communication is organized around same or similar age groups, with additional safeguards and exceptions.
- The age bands are more detailed than under 13, teen, and adult: Roblox describes narrower chat bands and separate Kids, Select, and general Roblox account experiences.
- Roblox does not promise instant deletion of every kind of biometric data: its statements about deletion apply specifically to selfie-only age-estimation processing, while ID verification has separate retention rules.
- A VPN is not a documented workaround: Roblox told Ofcom that the global rollout prevents users from changing territories to evade the requirement.
- Parents cannot always change a child’s age freely: Roblox says linked-parent corrections are generally limited to one use, with other options depending on the age and verification method.
What should players and parents do?
If you want to use Roblox chat:
- Open the correct Roblox account and go to Settings → Account Info.
- Choose Continue with selfie under Age Group, or use ID verification if the user is 13 or older.
- Make sure the account holder—not a parent or sibling—is in front of the camera.
- Review the resulting age group, parental controls, and regional feature availability.
- If chat is still missing, check whether the experience supports that chat type and whether the account needs a re-check.
If you do not want to submit a selfie or ID: you may still be able to play some Roblox games, but you should expect chat and other age-checked communication features to remain unavailable. Content access may also be more limited under the newer account structure.
If you are a parent: link a parent account before making corrections or changing controls. Complete the check on the child’s account with the child in front of the camera, and avoid using the one-time correction casually.
