In its official retrospective on the pair, SEGA traces Amy’s feelings to their first meeting and describes them growing into reliable partners—while leaving the romantic question open.
What SEGA says about Amy’s feelings
SEGA’s “Sonic & Amy” story, published February 22, 2021, says Amy fell in love with Sonic at their first meeting. It recounts Sonic rescuing her from Metal Sonic and says she continued following him afterward. Her romantic feelings are explicit in this account.
The story’s heading reads “一目ぼれから始まって、頼れるパートナー！ そして……？”—a close English rendering is “It began with love at first sight, and they became reliable partners! And then…?” The final question mark matters: the heading presents what comes next as unresolved, not as a declaration that they become a couple.
Does Sonic love Amy back?
The retrospective does not confirm that Sonic reciprocates Amy’s romantic feelings. It describes the trust built through their adventures and presents Amy as a reliable partner, but leaves their romantic status uncertain. That supports friendship and partnership, not proof of mutual romance.

Their dialogue in the story captures their familiar teasing: Amy complains that Sonic made her wait an hour, and Sonic replies that she arrived an hour early while he arrived on time. It is character banter, not an official statement that they are dating.

Not according to the cited official material. SEGA’s Sonic Superstars character page describes Amy as cheerful and energetic, with a strong sense of justice and a kind heart; it does not identify her as Sonic’s girlfriend. The 2021 retrospective likewise stops short of confirming a relationship.

SEGA Shop describes its Sonic and Amy shirt as celebrating their friendship and shared love of fun. That is consistent with the friendship framing, but merchandise wording is not a canon announcement about whether either character is romantically in love.

The clearest way to read their relationship
