Where the “fatal flaw” claim came from
Fortress of Solitude published “PS5 Gamers Sound the Alarm: This Fatal Design Flaw Could Destroy Your Console” on November 2, 2024. The article reproduced a statement from South African repair business Console Service Centre that was originally dated January 2, 2023.
“New year’s resolution for your PS5 in 2023, and what we learnt after doing more than 50 PS5 repairs in 2022. Don’t stand your PS5 upright on its stand. Let it lay flat. When it’s upright and gets hot, the liquid metal runs down to the bottom of the main processor. And the PS5 eventually starts overheating, a big design flaw for the PS5 consoles.”
The liquid-metal explanation and recommendation belong to the repair centre. The 2024 report does not supply independent testing or a Sony confirmation that upright use creates a general defect. The report also says the PS5 is built for either orientation, which conflicts with treating the repair centre’s advice as universal manufacturer guidance. Fortress of Solitude’s report documents the claim; it does not establish that the claim is true.

Is it bad to stand a PS5 upright?
The available evidence does not establish that upright placement by itself is harmful. It also does not prove that horizontal placement prevents liquid-metal movement or overheating. The most accurate conclusion is that the warning has not been verified as a general PS5 failure mechanism in the cited material.
Console Service Centre said it had completed more than 50 PS5 repairs in 2022. That is a business-reported repair count quoted in the 2024 article—not a count of confirmed orientation-related failures, a failure rate, or evidence about all PS5 consoles. The report gives no denominator or independently described method for connecting those repairs to console orientation.

Does PS5 liquid metal leak when vertical?
The quoted statement says hot liquid metal “runs down” when the console is upright, but the report does not provide test results or establish that this happens in ordinary use. It also does not resolve whether the claim applies to a particular PS5 model, repair condition, or failure mode. There is no Sony position on this specific claim in the cited material, so it should not be presented as a confirmed design flaw.

If you choose vertical or horizontal placement, use the stand intended for your console and keep the console stable, with its cooling openings unobstructed. Avoid cramped placement that blocks airflow. These are practical placement precautions, not evidence that horizontal orientation cures the alleged liquid-metal issue.

If the console develops an overheating warning or shuts down, do not assume orientation is the cause. Check for obstructed ventilation and consult PlayStation support or a qualified repair service rather than relying on the old repair-centre quote as a diagnosis.
