In Survival mode, build a small, sealed shelter before spending time on windows or decoration. Gather wood for planks and a crafting table, close the walls and roof with blocks you can get easily, then add a door and light. A bed and furnace are useful upgrades when you have the materials.
What you need for a first Minecraft house
There is no fixed shopping list: the amount of wall and roof material depends on your chosen footprint. Start with what is easy to gather, and prioritize a complete enclosure. Minecraft’s official beginner guide advises: “Build your shelter, making sure there’s no way for monsters to get in!” (Minecraft, “How to Minecraft”).
- Wood: Gather it from trees, then turn it into planks. One wood block makes four planks, and four planks make a crafting table (Minecraft, “How to craft,” 2023).
- Wall and roof blocks: Dirt or cobblestone can make a basic refuge; Minecraft’s first-night guide gives both as examples. Use enough to close the walls and roof rather than aiming for a particular count (Minecraft, “How to survive your first night in Minecraft,” 2023).
- Door: A wooden door gives you a convenient entrance you can close. Minecraft’s first-day instructions include crafting and placing one (Minecraft, “How to Survive your First Day,” 2017).
- Light: Torches can be crafted using wood or sticks and coal. Place light sources inside to reduce dark areas where hostile mobs can spawn (Minecraft, “How to survive your first night in Minecraft,” 2023).
- Optional bed: Craft it from three wool blocks of the same color and three planks of one wood type. Any wood type works. A bed lets you sleep and sets a respawn point (Minecraft, “Spawning and dying in Minecraft,” 2023).
- Optional furnace: Make one with eight cobblestone at a crafting table. It can smelt materials and prepare food (Minecraft, “How to survive your first night in Minecraft,” 2023).
Choose a layout that is easy to seal
A compact, ground-level rectangle is a practical first build: it is straightforward to enclose with common blocks and can fit an entrance, bed, crafting table, and furnace. This is a flexible layout suggestion, not an official blueprint or a required block count.
Pick reasonably level ground near resources you are already using. Leave room for an entrance, raise solid walls, and close the roof. For this first shelter, prioritize a sealed enclosure over windows or decorative shapes. Add openings and embellishments later, once the basic shelter is complete and lit.

Build the shelter in this order
- Gather wood. Collect enough to make planks and a crafting table. If night is approaching, do not delay shelter for decoration; use dirt or cobblestone to close off a simple refuge first.
- Make planks and a crafting table. One wood block yields four planks; use four planks to craft the table. The table gives access to the larger crafting grid (Minecraft, “How to craft,” 2023).
- Mark a modest footprint. Choose a small rectangle that leaves space for your entrance and survival furnishings. There is no universal dimension—the right size depends on the materials and room you want.
- Raise walls and close the roof. Use available solid blocks, leave an entrance, and make sure there is no gap for monsters to get in. A simple, fully enclosed shape is more useful for the first night than an elaborate design.
- Add a door and light. Place the door in the entrance when you can make one, then put light sources inside to reduce dark areas.
- Fit the essentials inside. Place the crafting table where you can reach it. Add a bed if you have the required wool and planks, and a furnace if you can spare eight cobblestone.
- Expand after the shelter works. Add windows, storage, extra rooms, or decorative features once the enclosure is complete and lit.
When to try a different starter-base design
Minecraft’s official starter-base examples include a mushroom house, jungle treehouse, and underwater glass house (Minecraft, “Tutorial: Easy Starter Bases for Survival Mode,” 2021). These are options for a suitable setting, not automatically safer first-night choices.
- Ground-level cabin: Works on ordinary terrain and is a practical choice when you want to enclose a small space with readily gathered blocks.
- Mushroom house: Depends on finding a suitable mushroom area; the official tutorial notes that this option is small.
- Jungle treehouse: Depends on jungle access and uses treetops and vines, so it is less convenient if you are building wherever you first spawn.
- Underwater glass house: Needs a water setting and glass; the official tutorial notes that expanding this kind of base can be tricky.
For any design, judge protection by whether the enclosure is complete and lit, not by its theme. A distinctive build is still a project to finish and secure.

Creative mode versus Survival mode
This guide’s material-gathering sequence is for Survival mode. In Creative mode, resource constraints are removed, so you can choose blocks freely and focus on the layout and appearance. The same basic design principle—make the space usable and decide how open or enclosed you want it—still applies.
