It does not promise a locked frame rate in every scene, 60 fps, long battery life, or the same experience for every player. For a particular game, read the compatibility details and look for recent performance reports as well as the badge.
What Steam Deck Verified means
Verified is one of four compatibility categories Valve assigns after reviewing a game. Valve describes the program as a way to help players understand the experience they can expect before launching a game on Deck. The review covers more than whether a game starts: it checks controls, access to game content, text entry, display legibility, launcher navigation, performance, and compatibility with Proton and required middleware such as anti-cheat.
Valve’s compatibility checklist says the default configuration must produce a playable frame rate, specified for Steam Deck as 30 fps at 800p. That is a stated minimum criterion for the default setup—not a promise that every scene will maintain 30 fps or that the game will meet a player’s preferred frame rate.

Valve’s Deck Verified program page explains that compatibility details are provided for reviewed games, so the rating is best read with those notes rather than in isolation.

Why Verified is not a smoothness guarantee
“Smooth” can mean different things: a high or stable frame rate, even frame pacing, readable text, comfortable controls, little setup, or a long unplugged session. Valve’s badge communicates that a game meets its compatibility requirements; it does not report every one of those preferences or certify that they will be satisfied for every player.
Valve publishes separate technical recommendations intended to improve comfort, performance, and battery life, but those recommendations do not affect the compatibility badge. That distinction matters if you want, for example, a high frame rate or a long handheld session: the Verified label alone does not answer those questions.

Compatibility information can also change. Valve says it reviews the catalog on an ongoing basis as games, game updates, and Deck features change. Its Steamworks documentation says games may be retested when Proton changes, new tests are added, or reports indicate that earlier data was inaccurate or incomplete. Check the current game-specific details when making a decision.
How to check a game before playing or buying
- Open the game’s Steam Store or Library page and read its Steam Deck compatibility details, not just the rating badge. Valve says reviewed titles include details to inform play and purchase decisions.
- If the game is marked Playable or Unsupported, look at which requirement is not met. Valve says Store details identify unmet requirements; Steamworks reports can include test results and specific Proton or middleware failures.
- If frame rate or battery life is important, look for recent reports for the same game and Deck model. Deck Verified Games is a community project with submitted settings, performance reports, compatibility notes, and estimated battery information. Treat these as user reports, not Valve certification or a guaranteed result on your own device.
- Decide which trade-offs matter to you: acceptable frame rate and frame pacing, legible text, comfortable controls, minimal setup, and battery life. The badge covers compatibility criteria, but those preferences may call for game-specific evidence.
Does the rating differ between Steam Deck LCD and OLED?
Valve Support’s current search-result text says the OLED target performance specification matches the LCD model and that titles reviewed through Deck Verified retain the same ratings on both. This supports treating the compatibility rating as shared across the two models, not assuming identical performance or battery life for a particular game. How to compare two games for Deck play
For a useful comparison, consider the current rating and its detail notes, whether controls and launchers work without extra setup, and recent reports about frame-rate stability at settings you are willing to use. Also compare text legibility and estimated battery trade-offs. Valve’s rating is the official compatibility signal; community reports can add practical context, but their results are user-submitted.
