Does Steam Frame Support Single-Eye Tracking, and Can You Switch Eyes?

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Not according to any publicly documented Steam Frame setting or specification. Valve confirms that Steam Frame has eye-tracking hardware and uses low-latency eye-tracking data for foveated streaming, but its official product information does not confirm monocular (single-eye) tracking, identify an independently selectable left or right eye, or describe an option to switch eyes.

The safest answer is therefore unconfirmed for both questions. Two cameras inside the headset do not, by themselves, prove that each eye is tracked independently or that software lets you choose one.

What Valve officially confirms

Valve’s Steam Frame product page, checked on October 13, 2026, describes eye tracking primarily as part of the headset’s foveated-streaming system. Valve writes: “Behind the scenes, we’re using low-latency eye tracking data to steer the best quality pixels only to where you’re looking.” In practical terms, the system is intended to concentrate the highest-detail streamed image in the area at which the user is looking, rather than sending the same maximum detail across the entire view.

The specification list names 2x interior cameras for eye tracking and foveated streaming. That is the complete camera-related eye-tracking description on the cited page. It does not label one camera as left-eye and the other as right-eye, explain whether both cameras observe both eyes, or state whether either camera can operate independently.

  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.

Valve also claims that foveated streaming typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth. This is a Valve product-page claim from 2026; the page does not provide a test method, hardware configuration, game list, or independent benchmark. The claim explains why eye tracking matters to Steam Frame, but it does not answer whether one eye can be tracked or selected.

Is single-eye tracking supported?

Valve’s public information does not confirm it. There is no statement that Steam Frame can continue tracking when one eye is covered, closed, unavailable, or not usable. There is also no published description of a monocular mode, a fallback that tracks whichever eye remains visible, or a minimum visibility requirement for either eye.

That absence is important because “eye tracking” can describe several different implementations. A headset may use two cameras to estimate gaze cooperatively, may use a camera pair to improve reliability, or may process information from one visible eye when the other is obstructed. The camera count does not reveal which design Steam Frame uses. Hardware capable of observing eyes is not the same thing as a user-facing single-eye feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accordingly, people who need one-eye operation should not treat the two-camera specification as confirmation that the headset will work in that configuration. Until Valve publishes a calibration guide, accessibility documentation, software setting, or technical explanation that explicitly addresses monocular operation, single-eye tracking remains unknown rather than supported.

Can you switch tracking between the left and right eye?

No eye-switching control is documented on Valve’s Steam Frame page. The page does not name a left-eye or right-eye selector, provide a calibration path with per-eye choices, or describe an automatic rule for choosing a tracking eye. It also does not say whether applications receive separate left- and right-eye gaze data.

That means there is no official instruction such as a menu path, button shortcut, or developer setting that can be recommended. A future SteamVR update could add an option, or the headset could handle eye selection automatically without exposing a switch, but neither behavior is established by the current public product information.

If your use case depends on deliberately choosing the left or right eye, regard Steam Frame as unconfirmed until Valve documents that workflow. Do not infer a switch from the presence of two interior cameras: two sensors can support a single combined gaze estimate just as easily as two independently selectable tracking channels.

Why the eye-tracking system exists: foveated streaming

Steam Frame’s documented eye-tracking purpose is foveated streaming. The headset uses gaze information to determine where the viewer is looking, then directs higher-quality streamed pixels toward that area. The goal is to preserve apparent detail where vision is most sensitive while reducing the amount of maximum-detail data that must be transmitted everywhere else.

This design makes latency significant. Valve specifically describes the data as “low-latency,” because a delayed gaze estimate could place the high-detail region behind the user’s actual point of regard. The product page’s “over a 10x” improvement statement should be read as a typical product claim, not a guaranteed result for every title, network, resolution, or user. Valve does not publish methodology on that page.

Nothing in the foveated-streaming explanation requires a user-selectable eye. A system can use a combined gaze estimate to steer the detail region without exposing separate controls. Conversely, the existence of foveated streaming does not establish how the system behaves if one eye is occluded. Those implementation details are not supplied.

Specifications that do not answer the eye-selection question

Several Steam Frame specifications may look relevant but describe the display or fit rather than tracking behavior:

Published specification What it tells you What it does not tell you
2x interior cameras for eye tracking and foveated streaming The headset includes two inward-facing cameras with eye tracking and foveated streaming among their stated purposes. Whether each camera is dedicated to one eye, whether both eyes are required, or whether a user can choose an eye.
2160 × 2160 LCD panels, one per eye Each eye has its own listed display panel at that resolution. Whether gaze tracking is monocular, binocular, switchable, or exposed separately to software.
60–70 mm target IPD range The headset is designed for interpupillary-distance adjustment or fit across that target range. How calibration handles one-eye use, eye occlusion, or a selected tracking eye.

Display resolution and IPD are often confused with tracking capability because they also refer to the eyes. They are separate systems. A per-eye display does not imply per-eye tracking controls, and an adjustable IPD range does not describe calibration behavior when one eye cannot be tracked.

What is not documented about calibration and accessibility

The official page does not explain the eye-tracking calibration sequence. It does not say whether calibration asks the user to look at targets with both eyes, whether it can be repeated for only one eye, or whether it can compensate for an eye that is covered by an occluder, prosthesis, eyelid, hair, or eyewear. No public setting is listed for disabling one camera or selecting a preferred eye.

Valve likewise does not specify an accessibility mode for users with monocular vision, strabismus, reduced vision in one eye, or an eye that cannot be tracked reliably. That is not evidence that Steam Frame will fail for those users; it is a limit on what can responsibly be promised from the published specifications. The product page gives no supported procedure or expected behavior for those situations.

Applications may also need different data from the headset’s internal foveated-streaming system. Valve’s description says the tracking steers streamed image quality. It does not state that games or other software receive raw gaze vectors, separate per-eye measurements, or a preference setting. Foveated streaming and application-facing eye tracking should therefore be treated as distinct questions.

Do the listed accessories provide eye switching?

No. The Steam Frame page lists Zenni prescription inserts and the Arcturus Vision Camera among accessories, but neither is presented as a way to select a tracking eye.

Prescription inserts address optical fit and corrective lenses; they do not constitute a documented monocular-tracking control. The Arcturus Vision Camera is described for passthrough and spatial video, not as an interior eye-tracking sensor or left/right-eye selector. Adding either accessory should not be expected to create a switch that Valve has not documented.

What to verify before relying on Steam Frame for one-eye use

If single-eye operation is a requirement rather than a curiosity, check for explicit answers in Valve’s documentation and software at the time you buy or deploy the headset. The following questions distinguish a real supported feature from an assumption based on camera count:

  • Does the setup or calibration screen let you calibrate with only the left eye or only the right eye?
  • Is there a setting named for monocular, single-eye, preferred-eye, or eye-selection operation?
  • Does Valve explain what happens when one eye is covered or cannot be detected?
  • Can the user disable one interior camera or choose which camera supplies gaze data?
  • Do SteamVR release notes or developer documents describe separate left- and right-eye gaze outputs?
  • Does the accessibility documentation state expected behavior for monocular vision or persistent occlusion?

A positive answer should come from an official manual, a clearly labeled SteamVR setting, or a Valve technical document. A demonstration that the headset has two cameras is not enough to answer any of these questions.

How Steam Frame compares with a headset that explicitly supports monocular tracking

There is no supported alternative or product comparison in Valve’s page for this specific choice. If you are evaluating headsets generally, compare documented capabilities rather than camera counts. Useful axes include whether monocular tracking is explicitly supported, whether the user can choose an eye in settings, how calibration handles occlusion, and whether applications receive separate eye-tracking data.

Comparison axis What to look for in documentation Steam Frame status in the cited page
Monocular tracking An explicit statement that one eye can provide tracking data or that the other eye may be unavailable. Not stated.
Preferred-eye control A left/right selector or a documented calibration choice. Not stated.
Occlusion handling Instructions for a covered, closed, or otherwise undetected eye. Not stated.
Per-eye application data Developer documentation describing separate gaze values or eye identifiers. Not stated on the product page.
Tracking purpose An explanation of whether tracking drives rendering, interaction, accessibility, or all three. Eye tracking is described for foveated streaming.

This framework prevents a common mistake: treating a specification that confirms sensors as if it also confirms user controls and software APIs. Those are separate claims and require separate documentation.

What the current answer means for different users

Users who simply want foveated streaming

Valve does confirm the hardware and the intended use: two interior cameras provide eye-tracking input for foveated streaming, which steers higher-quality pixels toward the user’s gaze. The page does not promise a particular calibration method or performance in every environment, and its “over a 10x” figure is a Valve claim without a published methodology.

Users who need one eye tracked

Do not assume compatibility from the camera specification. The official page supplies no monocular mode, fallback behavior, or accessibility procedure. Wait for explicit documentation or a tested, clearly supported setting before making Steam Frame the basis of an accessibility-dependent setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Developers needing a selectable eye

The product page does not document a left/right-eye selector or separate gaze stream. Developers should not build a workflow that depends on either capability until Valve publishes the relevant SteamVR or headset documentation.

Bottom line on single-eye tracking and switching eyes

Steam Frame’s publicly documented eye tracking is for foveated streaming, using two interior cameras to steer detail toward where the user looks. Valve has not confirmed single-eye tracking, a preferred-eye setting, or a way to switch between eyes. The correct answer today is neither capability is confirmed; camera count, per-eye LCD panels, IPD range, and listed accessories do not change that conclusion. Valve also notes that specifications may change before availability, so the official product page remains the place to check for a later calibration or accessibility update.
