Superfetch—now shown as the SysMain service—can affect disk and CPU activity, but it is not a universal FPS switch. For most Windows 10 and Windows 11 gaming PCs, leave it enabled. Consider stopping it only as a controlled troubleshooting test when monitoring shows SysMain is active during a reproducible stutter, disk spike, or compatibility problem.

Superfetch and SysMain are the same conversation—but not every cache feature is the same thing

“Superfetch” is the older name used by many guides and registry instructions. In the Services console, the current service is generally named SysMain. Microsoft describes SysMain as a system-performance service intended to maintain and improve responsiveness over time, rather than as a game-rendering accelerator (Microsoft Learn).

Do not treat all Windows data-loading mechanisms as one switch. The SysMain service, Prefetch, ReadyBoot, the standby/file cache, game asset streaming, and GPU shader caches are separate layers. Stopping SysMain does not disable every form of preloading, and changing the EnablePrefetcher registry value is a different intervention.

Does SysMain increase or reduce FPS?

Normally, no. SysMain does not increase GPU shader throughput, rasterization, CPU simulation speed, or a game’s maximum frame rate. If average FPS changes after stopping it, the effect is indirect and specific to that machine, game, and background workload.

A background read or CPU task can coincide with a frame-time spike on a constrained system, so average FPS, 1% lows, and frame-time consistency must be measured separately. There is no authoritative current benchmark establishing a universal FPS gain from disabling SysMain across Windows 10 and 11 systems. Claims of a fixed “20% FPS boost” require controlled, hardware-specific testing rather than repeating an online tweak.

When can SysMain contribute to stutter or disk activity?

SysMain may be visible during a hitch without being its cause. A contribution is more plausible when the following overlap in time:

  • a mechanical hard drive is handling heavy random I/O;
  • the PC has limited RAM and is already paging;
  • an older or low-power CPU has little spare capacity;
  • the game streams large assets while Windows performs background reads; or
  • a particular application triggers unusual SysMain CPU behavior.

Other common sources of a 100% disk graph or hitch include shader compilation, texture or asset decompression, Windows Update, antivirus scanning, cloud synchronization, launcher downloads, storage-driver problems, and a failing or overheating drive. Correlate SysMain’s activity with the exact frame-time event before assigning blame.

A documented compatibility case is narrow

Microsoft documents a one-to-two-minute SysMain CPU spike for a specific 64-bit application compiled with /LARGEADDRESSAWARE:NO. The article, current as of February 12, 2026, describes Windows 7 SP1 and that application condition—not ordinary Windows 10/11 gaming (Microsoft Learn). It should not be used as proof that SysMain normally damages game performance.

Does high RAM usage mean Superfetch is hurting your game?

No. Windows uses otherwise available RAM for file caching. Cached pages can be placed on the standby list and reclaimed when applications need memory, so “used” or cached RAM in Task Manager is not automatically unavailable to a game (Microsoft Learn).

Look instead for low available memory, hard faults or paging during play, rising commit usage, sustained disk activity, and frame-time spikes. Do not repeatedly clear standby memory as a routine optimization, and do not disable the pagefile or unrelated memory-management features because the cache number looks large.

Should you disable SysMain on an SSD or HDD?

Situation Recommended action
No reproducible performance problem Leave SysMain enabled.
HDD with slow repeated application launches Usually leave it enabled; predictive caching may help.
SysMain activity overlaps a repeatable stutter or disk spike Stop it temporarily and measure the same scenario.
SSD with normal gaming performance Do not disable it solely because the drive is an SSD.
Low available RAM and paging Investigate memory pressure first; SysMain may not be the cause.
No improvement in a controlled test Restore the previous startup setting.

SSDs reduce loading latency, so the benefit of predictive caching may be smaller for some workloads than on an HDD. That does not establish that SysMain is harmful on SSDs. A fast NVMe or SATA SSD, drive health, RAM capacity, Windows build, game, and background workload can all change the result. MSI lists disabling SuperFetch as a possible Windows 11 disk-performance troubleshooting step, not as a general gaming recommendation (MSI FAQ 00740).

Test SysMain instead of applying a permanent tweak

1. Record a baseline

Use the same Windows build, game and graphics-driver versions, graphics settings, resolution, refresh rate, background applications, save point or benchmark route, and warm/cold launch state. Record average FPS, 1% lows, a frame-time graph, launch and level-load times, CPU and GPU utilization, disk active time and throughput, available memory, paging or hard faults, and SysMain CPU and disk activity. Task Manager and Resource Monitor are sufficient for basic checks; Windows Performance Recorder/Analyzer or reputable PresentMon-based software can provide deeper traces. Microsoft recommends monitoring CPU, memory, and disk usage when diagnosing slow Windows performance (Microsoft Support).

2. Change only SysMain

Do not disable Windows Search, antivirus, Game Mode, hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, fullscreen optimizations, startup programs, visual effects, memory compression, or the pagefile at the same time. Multiple changes make any result impossible to attribute.

3. Repeat both conditions

Run each condition more than once. First launches can differ from later launches because of file-cache state, shader compilation, asset compilation, or launcher behavior. Compare frame-time distributions and loading times, not just one average-FPS number.

4. Keep the change only when evidence supports it

A useful result requires a reproducible original problem, SysMain activity during that problem, a repeatable improvement after stopping it, and no meaningful deterioration in application launches or normal Windows responsiveness. Otherwise, restore the default configuration.

How to stop and restore SysMain safely

Services console

  1. Press Win + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find SysMain, open Properties, and record its current service status and startup type.
  3. For a reversible test, choose Stop, test the game, and then reboot or restore the previous setting.
  4. Use Disabled for startup only if a controlled test shows a repeatable benefit.

Optional elevated PowerShell commands

Open PowerShell as administrator. These commands affect the entire Windows installation, not one game:

Get-Service -Name SysMain
Get-CimInstance Win32_Service -Filter "Name='SysMain'" | Select-Object Name, State, StartMode, PathName
Stop-Service -Name SysMain
Set-Service -Name SysMain -StartupType Disabled

To restore automatic startup:

Set-Service -Name SysMain -StartupType Automatic
Start-Service -Name SysMain

A reboot can make a comparison cleaner. Do not change Prefetch registry values as a first-line gaming tweak; that would test a separate layer.

What to check before blaming SysMain

  • Use Task Manager or Resource Monitor to identify which process owns the CPU, memory, and disk activity.
  • Check storage health, free space, firmware, temperature, and chipset/storage drivers.
  • Update graphics drivers and relevant platform drivers from the hardware manufacturer.
  • Reduce unnecessary startup and background applications; Microsoft identifies these as common performance factors (Microsoft Support).
  • Use an appropriate Windows power mode. “Best performance” can increase power use, heat, and laptop battery drain (Microsoft Support).
  • Check whether the game is compiling shaders or streaming assets during the hitch.
  • If paging is the limitation, add RAM or reduce workload; cached memory alone does not prove a shortage.
  • If HDD loading or streaming latency is the limitation, moving the game to an SSD addresses storage performance directly.

Keep these Windows features separate

Game Mode, GPU shader caches, the pagefile, Prefetch, and SysMain are different systems. Windows 11’s optimizations for windowed games are also unrelated: for supported DirectX 10/11 games in windowed or borderless modes, Microsoft says the feature can reduce presentation latency and enable Auto HDR or variable refresh rate on supported displays (Microsoft Support). Microsoft explains the presentation-path changes separately in its DirectX developer guidance (DirectX Developer Blog).

The Bottom Line

Verdict: Leave SysMain enabled by default on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Stop it temporarily only when measurements show that its CPU or disk work overlaps a reproducible problem; keep it disabled only if repeated tests improve that problem without harming launch times or everyday responsiveness.
