Yes—with important qualifications. The 2023 Asus ROG Ally is a Windows 11 PC that can run ordinary work software and PC games, but it is not a laptop replacement for everyone. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme model is a capable handheld gaming PC, while productivity is most practical with a dock, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
What the ROG Ally actually is
The original ROG Ally is a compact Windows 11 Home computer with built-in game controls, not a traditional console. It can install normal Windows applications, browsers, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, messaging tools, remote-desktop clients, coding software, creative applications, and PC game launchers including Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, EA App, and GOG Galaxy.

This article concerns the original 2023 model, identified by Asus as RC71L. It was sold with either the six-core Ryzen Z1 or the eight-core Ryzen Z1 Extreme. Do not confuse it with the 2024 ROG Ally X or the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally models, which have different hardware, batteries, interfaces, and features.

How good is it as a gaming PC?
The Ryzen Z1 Extreme is the version to prioritize for gaming. It has eight Zen 4 CPU cores, 16 threads, RDNA 3 integrated graphics with 12 compute units, 16GB of shared LPDDR5-6400 memory, and a configurable 9–30W power range. The base Ryzen Z1 has six cores, 12 threads, and only four graphics compute units, making it substantially less attractive for demanding games.

The Ally’s 7-inch screen is 1920×1080, 120Hz, touchscreen, and supports variable refresh rate. That does not mean modern games will run at 1080p and 120 frames per second. Depending on the title and power mode, you may need to reduce resolution, textures, shadows, or other settings, enable upscaling, limit the frame rate, or use a lower internal rendering resolution.
In practical terms, the Z1 Extreme Ally is a capable 720p-to-1080p handheld gaming PC. Performance varies with the game, whether the device is plugged in, Windows background activity, and the selected power profile. It can access a broad range of Windows-compatible PC games, but compatibility, anti-cheat systems, launchers, and controller support still vary by game.
The original Ally also supports Asus’s ROG XG Mobile external GPU family, which can provide substantially more graphics performance when connected to a desk setup. That accessory is expensive and availability varies, so it may make more sense to buy a conventional gaming laptop or desktop if high-end graphics performance is the priority.

Windows compatibility is not the main problem. The Ally can handle browsing, email, documents, web applications, video calls, remote work, light coding, accounting, administration, and basic photo or video editing. Its 16GB of onboard memory is generally enough for mainstream office work and gaming.

- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
However, that memory is shared between the processor and integrated graphics, and it cannot be upgraded. Many browser tabs, large spreadsheets, video calls, creative applications, virtual machines, development environments, and games running alongside other software can reduce the available headroom.
The bigger limitation is the form factor. A 7-inch screen is excellent for handheld gaming but cramped for spreadsheets, timelines, multitasking, and long documents. There is no built-in keyboard or trackpad. Asus documents using the right analog stick as a cursor, the right bumper as left-click, and the right trigger as right-click; the on-screen keyboard can be opened through the Ally’s controls or Windows interface. These features make occasional desktop use possible, but they are not as fast or comfortable as a laptop keyboard and trackpad.
Without accessories, the Ally is suitable for checking email, browsing, editing a short document, filling in forms, or working remotely for limited periods. It is a poor choice for several hours of typing, spreadsheet-heavy work, frequent copy-and-paste operations, or precise creative editing.

Can it become a desktop PC?
Yes. A docked setup is the Ally’s strongest productivity configuration:

- Connect a USB-C dock or hub to the Ally.
- Connect the dock’s power supply.
- Attach an external monitor through HDMI or DisplayPort.
- Connect a keyboard and mouse.
- Choose the appropriate display mode in Windows if necessary.
- Use the Ally screen as a second display or turn it off.
- Select a suitable power mode for the workload, especially when plugged in.
The original Ally has one USB-C combination port supporting USB 3.2 Gen 2 and DisplayPort 1.4, plus a UHS-II microSD reader and 3.5mm audio jack. Because charging, video output, and peripherals compete for that single USB-C port, a powered dock with adequate USB-C power delivery is usually preferable to an inexpensive unpowered hub.
A docked Ally can serve as a credible compact desktop for office work, browsing, remote access, and light creative tasks. It is still dependent on separate accessories, however, so it is not as self-contained as a laptop or desktop computer.
Battery, storage, and other limitations
Battery life
The original Ally has a 40Wh battery. Gaming runtime can be short, particularly at higher power settings; lighter desktop work may last longer, but no single runtime applies to every workload. Brightness, refresh rate, Wi-Fi, background applications, game complexity, and power mode all affect battery life.
The Ally is most practical near an outlet, in a dock, or for short travel work sessions. If you need a full workday away from power, a conventional laptop is usually the safer choice.
Rank #4
Storage
Asus lists a 512GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe 2230 SSD. The usable capacity is lower after Windows, recovery data, applications, and games are installed. Modern PC games can quickly fill the drive, so users with a large library may need a UHS-II microSD card, an internal SSD replacement, external USB storage, or cloud storage.
Heat, noise, and performance modes
Higher power modes can improve gaming and demanding work performance but increase power consumption, heat, and fan noise. Sustained gaming or heavy work should generally be done with the charger connected rather than relying on the internal battery.
Workplace compatibility
The Ally ships with Windows 11 Home. An employer may require Windows Pro, domain enrollment, device-management tools, specific VPN software, security policies, or other enterprise features. Check those requirements before treating the Ally as a company-issued laptop replacement.

Who should use the ROG Ally as both a work and gaming PC?
It is a good fit if you:
- Mostly use browser-based services, documents, email, and communications tools.
- Already own a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or compatible dock.
- Want one compact Windows device for handheld gaming and light productivity.
- Work mainly at a desk and can remain near a power outlet.
- Value handheld gaming more than keyboard comfort.
- Are willing to adjust game settings and manage Windows.
It is a poor fit if you:
- Type for several hours every day.
- Need reliable all-day battery life away from an outlet.
- Require 32GB or more memory, a discrete GPU, or workstation-class performance.
- Use heavy CAD, 3D rendering, 4K video editing, virtual machines, or other demanding professional software.
- Need a built-in keyboard, trackpad, multiple ports, and displays without extra equipment.
- Want a computer that works like a console with virtually no setup.
ROG Ally versus a laptop or desktop
| Need | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld PC gaming | ROG Ally | Built-in controls and compact design. |
| Comfortable daily typing | Laptop | Integrated keyboard, trackpad, and larger display. |
| High-end gaming or creative work | Gaming laptop or desktop | More sustained cooling, memory, and discrete-GPU options. |
| One device for desk and handheld use | ROG Ally | Especially compelling when a monitor and peripherals are already available. |
| Simple, self-contained work computer | Laptop | No dock, monitor, keyboard, or mouse required. |
Accessories can change the value calculation. Once you add a dock, monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, storage, and possibly an external GPU, the total setup may approach the cost of a capable laptop or desktop. The Ally makes the most sense when those accessories are already available or when handheld gaming is a major priority.
What about the Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally?
New buyers may encounter newer models under similar names. The 2024 ROG Ally X targets improved battery life, storage, and connectivity. The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally adds an Xbox-oriented full-screen experience while retaining Windows desktop functions. Their specifications and interfaces should not be applied to the 2023 Ally.
Asus’s documentation also distinguishes external-GPU compatibility: the original Ally supports the ROG XG Mobile series, while the Ally X does not support that same interface. Check the exact model before buying accessories.
See the ROG Ally X and the ROG Xbox Ally on Asus’s official sites.
Final verdict
As a gaming PC: yes, especially in the Ryzen Z1 Extreme configuration. As a work PC: yes, particularly when connected to a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and dock. As a universal laptop replacement: no.
The original ROG Ally can replace a basic home PC in a docked setup and combine a gaming handheld with a Windows computer. It rarely replaces the comfort, battery life, screen space, and self-contained convenience of a full-time laptop.
For the strongest version of this use case, choose the Z1 Extreme model, budget for a powered USB-C dock and proper peripherals, and treat the Ally as a compact Windows computer with game controls—not as a console that happens to run a few work apps.
