The server and each player’s client must use the same Create release and compatible dependency versions; otherwise the mod handshake normally rejects the connection. Create is therefore a client-and-server mod, not a server-only mod.

What “server-side” means for Create
“Server-side” can mean two different things in Minecraft discussions. It can mean that a mod must be present on the server, or it can mean that a mod works only on the server. Create falls into the first category, not the second.

A dedicated server needs those rules to load and run the world, but a player’s game also needs the mod to render the blocks, show the items and understand the network messages exchanged with the server. Modrinth lists Create’s platform as “Client and server” [C1]. A player cannot normally use an unmodified client to connect to a server that has Create installed.
That means a valid multiplayer installation has two sides:

- Server: Create is installed in the server’s mod set so the world can load Create content and process contraptions.
- Client: Create is installed in every player’s Minecraft instance, using the matching loader, Create release and dependency versions.
A server-only installation is not a supported arrangement for Create. Installing the jar only in the server’s mods folder does not make it a server-only mod; it leaves connecting clients without the code they need.
Do clients need Create when the server already has it?
Yes. Every connecting player needs Create on the client. The common symptom is a disconnect during the mod-list or handshake stage: the server appears online, but the client is refused before the player reaches the world. A setup guide identifies a missing client installation as the usual reason a player cannot join a server running Create [C3].

The requirement applies to every player separately. If three people join a Create server, all three clients need the correct installation. One player having the mod does not provide it to the others, and putting the jar on the server does not download it automatically.
Single-player worlds do not bypass this rule. A single-player game runs an integrated server inside the client. The same Minecraft instance supplies both sides, so Create still has to be installed in that instance with the correct mod loader.

Client, server and version requirements
Matching the name “Create” is not enough. The handshake checks the mod and its declared metadata, and incompatibilities can stop a connection even when both sides appear to have Create installed.

Do not assume that the newest Create file is compatible with an older server pack. Choose the Minecraft and loader version first, then obtain the Create release and dependency set made for that combination. Supported Minecraft and loader versions change as Create releases change, so there is no permanent compatibility rule that can replace checking the release’s current metadata.

The CurseForge listing identifies Forge and NeoForge support and also notes a port in the Fabric ecosystem [C2]. These are separate installation paths, not interchangeable jar choices.
Forge
Use a Forge server when the pack was built for Forge. Install the Forge server corresponding to the pack’s Minecraft version, then place the Forge-compatible Create file and its required dependencies in the server’s mods directory. Each player must use a Forge client on the same Minecraft version with the same mod set.

NeoForge
Use NeoForge when the pack specifies NeoForge. A NeoForge installation is not made compatible simply by copying a Forge-only Create jar into it. Select the Create build whose release metadata supports your NeoForge and Minecraft combination, and give clients the corresponding NeoForge setup.
Fabric ecosystem port
A Fabric-ecosystem port is noted in the CurseForge listing [C2]. Treat that port as its own platform: use the port’s stated loader, dependencies and Minecraft version on both server and client. Do not mix a Forge or NeoForge build with a Fabric server, or assume that a port has identical release numbering or dependency requirements.
How to install Create on a dedicated server and clients
The exact launcher labels differ, but the order below prevents most side and version mistakes.
Prepare the server
- Choose the Minecraft version and loader. Decide whether the server is Forge, NeoForge or the supported Fabric-ecosystem port. Record the exact Minecraft and loader versions before downloading mods.
- Install the loader’s dedicated-server files. Start the server once so it creates its normal folders and accepts the required terms. Stop it before adding mods.
- Install Create in the server’s
modsfolder. Use the release built for the server’s Minecraft and loader versions. - Add Create’s dependencies. Copy every dependency required by that release, using versions compatible with the same loader and Minecraft version. A dependency missing on the server prevents the server from starting.
- Start the server and read the log. Confirm that Create loads without a missing-mod, wrong-loader or wrong-version error. Do not proceed to client testing while the server is still reporting startup failures.
Prepare each player’s client
- Install the same loader family and Minecraft version. A Forge client must join a Forge server, a NeoForge client must join a NeoForge server, and a Fabric-port client must follow that port’s loader requirements.
- Install the identical Create release. Copy the same version used by the server into the client instance’s
modsfolder or install it through the launcher’s mod-profile workflow. - Install the matching dependencies. The client needs the dependencies required for Create, not just the Create jar itself. Keep their versions aligned with the server pack.
- Launch once and check the mod list. Before joining, verify that the loader reports Create as loaded and that no dependency or mixin error appears in the client log.
- Connect using the server’s address. If the connection fails during the handshake, compare the two mod lists before changing world or network settings.
Where Create’s configuration files live
Create separates settings by side and scope. Its configuration files are named create-client.toml, create-common.toml and create-server.toml [C4]. They are not interchangeable.

The server configuration is attached to a world save. Consequently, changing create-server.toml for one world does not automatically change another world, and editing a similarly named file in a global config directory may not affect the active save. Stop the server before editing configuration files, keep a backup, and let Create regenerate a file if a manual edit leaves it invalid.
Fixing “I can’t join; the server has Create”
Work through the failure in this order. It distinguishes a missing client mod from a loader or dependency mismatch without deleting the world.

1. Confirm the client actually loads Create
Open the client’s mod list or startup log. If Create is absent, disabled or marked incompatible, install the correct client-side file and restart. Merely seeing a Create jar in a downloads folder does not prove that the active profile is using it.
2. Compare exact versions
Read the server log and the client’s mod list and compare the Create release, Minecraft version and loader version character for character. “Both have Create” is insufficient when one side has a different build.

3. Compare dependencies
Check the dependency errors printed by the loader. Add the missing dependency to whichever side lacks it, or replace it with the version required by the selected Create release. Do not copy random versions from another modpack; dependency compatibility is tied to the pack’s Minecraft and loader versions.
4. Check the loader family
A Forge client cannot substitute for a NeoForge client, and a Fabric-port setup cannot use a Forge or NeoForge Create jar. Recreate the client profile with the loader named by the server pack.

Two Create versions in one mods folder can produce an ambiguous or failed load. Stop the game, remove older duplicates, and leave only the release selected for the server. Apply the same cleanup on the server.
6. Read the first meaningful error
Ignore a long cascade of secondary errors and find the first missing-mod, dependency, registry or loader message. That line usually identifies whether the problem is a missing client installation, an incorrect version or an unsupported loader combination. If both sides show the same mod set and the handshake still fails, compare the complete pack rather than only Create; another mod can also declare an incompatible requirement.
Updating Create without breaking a world
Update the server and clients as one planned change. First back up the world, then verify that the target Create release supports the server’s Minecraft and loader versions. Replace the server jar and dependency set, start the server once, and inspect the log. Only after the server starts cleanly should every player update their client profile to the same set.
Do not update one player’s client ahead of the server and expect a compatibility fallback. A Create release change can alter registries, recipes or network expectations, so a mismatched client may be refused even when the Minecraft version remains unchanged. Keep the previous server files and backup until players have connected successfully.
Bottom line
Create must be installed on the server and on every client. Use one supported loader path, match Create and dependency versions exactly, and remember that the server configuration belongs to each world save. If a player cannot join a Create server, check the client installation and the complete version-and-dependency match before troubleshooting unrelated network settings.
