Does the Ender Dragon Always Give XP? First vs. Repeat Kills

The Ender Dragon gives XP each time it is defeated, but the first kill is listed at 12,000 XP and later re-summoned fights at 500 XP.

Yes. The Ender Dragon drops XP when defeated, but the amount depends on whether it is your first defeat or a later, re-summoned fight: the first defeat is listed at 12,000 XP, while a re-summoned dragon is listed at 500 XP.

How much XP does the Ender Dragon give?

Fight XP points
First defeat 12,000 XP
Re-summoned dragon 500 XP

The figures are reported by the Minecraft Wiki’s Ender Dragon page; the retrieved page does not state a publication or revision year. Minecraft’s official Ender Dragon page also identifies XP orbs as a reward and notes that players can respawn the dragon, but does not give a numerical total.

Why the first defeat gives more

The large reward is associated with defeating the dragon for the first time. If you respawn it and defeat it again, the listed reward is much smaller: 500 XP rather than 12,000 XP. The first-versus-resummoned distinction is the relevant one when asking whether every kill gives the same amount.

XP points are not the same as levels

XP points and player levels are different measures. The Minecraft Wiki’s Ender Dragon defeat tutorial says the 12,000 XP from the first defeat can take a player from level 0 to level 68. The number of levels gained varies with how much XP you already have, so 12,000 XP does not mean a fixed number of levels for every player.

Does it work the same in Java and Bedrock?

The cited sources support the first-defeat versus re-summoned distinction, but they do not establish that the exact totals are identical across every Java Edition and Bedrock Edition version. Treat the figures as the reported general values rather than a version-by-version guarantee.
