What is included in the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition?
Nintendo’s U.S. product listing identifies the edition as a themed Nintendo Switch 2 console rather than a software bundle. Its included-items list contains the hardware and standard accessories needed to use the system:

What the design represents
Nintendo UK describes the product as a console featuring Triforce motifs across the console, dock, and Joy-Con 2 controllers. That description explains the visual theme, not a software entitlement. A Zelda logo, character graphic, or anniversary branding on a console should not be treated as evidence that a game is in the box unless the retailer’s included-items section explicitly names one.
Why the Zelda name does not mean a game is bundled
Console makers sell special editions in two different ways. A themed hardware edition changes the appearance of the system and accessories, while a game bundle adds a separately identified title, usually as a cartridge or a download code. The Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition falls into the first category based on Nintendo’s published contents.
This distinction matters when comparing prices or deciding whether you need to budget for software. Two consoles can have similar Zelda artwork while offering very different value: one may include only hardware, and another may include a game license. The reliable test is the “what’s included” section, not the product name or promotional imagery.
What is not stated by Nintendo’s listing
- No Zelda game title appears in the included-items list.
- No physical game card is listed.
- No digital download code is listed.
- No free game redemption period or software voucher is listed.
- No Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack entitlement is identified as part of the hardware package.
That absence does not prevent Nintendo or a retailer from offering a separate promotion later. It means the published anniversary-edition package itself should be treated as hardware-only unless a future listing clearly adds software.
Release date and availability
Nintendo announced October 29, 2026 as the availability date for the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition. Nintendo UK’s holiday-bundle announcement is dated September 16, 2026, and presents October 29 as a scheduled date rather than a past launch. Because that date is still upcoming relative to the October 13, 2026 product-information check, listings and stock can change before release.

- Glossy white dock with Hylian illustrations
- Hardware with designs from the game
- 7-inch OLED screen. Enjoy vivid colors and crisp contrast with a screen that makes colors pop
- Freely angle the system’s wide, adjustable stand for comfortable viewing in Tabletop mode
- Use the dock’s LAN port when playing in TV mode for a wired internet connection (LAN cable sold separately)
When the U.S. product page was checked on October 13, 2026, it displayed “Currently unavailable.” That status is time-sensitive and should not be read as a permanent cancellation or as proof that every retailer is out of stock. Check the retailer’s live page for ordering status, regional release timing, and whether the seller has added a separate game promotion.
Regional details to check
- United States: Use the U.S. product page for the American package contents and the current status shown there.
- United Kingdom: Nintendo UK’s announcement confirms the themed hardware description and the October 29, 2026 availability date.
- Other regions: Do not assume that a package, power adapter, warranty, or retailer promotion matches the U.S. or U.K. versions. Read the local Nintendo listing before ordering.
Zelda games you can buy separately
Nintendo lists Switch 2 versions of major Zelda games independently from the anniversary console. Buying one of these titles gives you software for the system, but it does not change what was included in the console box.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo has a separate official physical listing for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. It is a Switch 2 game with performance improvements and Switch 2-exclusive features, including ZELDA NOTES. The game is sold as its own product, so a buyer choosing the anniversary console should add this title separately if it is the Zelda adventure they want.
See the separate product information at Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition listing. The listing is evidence that the game exists as a separate purchase; it is not evidence that the game is bundled with the anniversary hardware.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo also lists The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Owners of the Nintendo Switch version can purchase an upgrade pack. Nintendo says eligible active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access some Switch 2 Edition content at no additional cost. Eligibility depends on the buyer’s existing game ownership and membership status.

Details about the game, upgrade route, and membership qualification are provided on Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild expansion and upgrade page. An upgrade option is tied to the game and the customer’s eligibility; it is not automatically attached to the Zelda 40th Anniversary console.
| Game option | How it relates to the special-edition console | What the buyer must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Separate Switch 2 game listing; not included in the anniversary hardware contents | Whether to buy the physical game separately and which edition is compatible with the intended system |
| Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | Separate game or upgrade path; not included in the anniversary hardware contents | Whether the buyer owns the Switch version and qualifies for the stated Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack benefit |
How to verify a listing before you pay
Retail pages often use identical product photography for a console sold alone and a console-plus-game bundle. Use this checklist to avoid paying for software you thought was included.
- Match the exact product name. Confirm that the listing says “Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition,” not a retailer-created bundle with an additional game.
- Open the contents or “what’s included” section. Look for an explicit game title, “download code,” “game card,” or “digital version.” If only the console, Joy-Con 2 controllers, dock, cables, grip, and straps appear, the listing describes hardware only.
- Read the software wording. Phrases such as “game sold separately” or “console only” settle the question even when Zelda artwork dominates the page.
- Separate retailer extras from Nintendo’s package. A retailer may add a game, case, or gift card as a promotion. Those extras are not part of Nintendo’s standard anniversary-edition contents and may disappear when the promotion ends.
- Check region and format. Verify whether the game is physical or digital, whether the code can be redeemed in your account region, and whether the title is the Switch 2 Edition rather than an older Switch release.
- Review the order summary. Before checkout, confirm that the console and the desired game appear as separate line items if you intend to purchase both.
How to compare this console with another Switch 2 bundle
If you are choosing between the Zelda anniversary model and another Switch 2 package, compare the same factors for each listing. The themed design may be the deciding feature, but it should not be confused with included software or a lower total cost.
| Comparison point | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Included software | Is a specific game, code, or upgrade named? | Determines whether you can play immediately without another software purchase. |
| Hardware design | Are the console, dock, and controllers themed, or standard? | Shows what you are paying for visually and whether the accessories match. |
| Release timing | Is the date a scheduled future release or an available product? | Prevents confusion between a preorder announcement and an in-stock system. |
| Current availability | Does the live listing show stock, preorder status, or unavailability? | Retail inventory can change independently of Nintendo’s announcement. |
| Total purchase | What will the console plus the desired Zelda game cost together? | A hardware-only package may require a separate game budget. |
| Regional compatibility | Do the console, game format, power accessories, and digital code match your region? | Regional differences can affect redemption, support, and included accessories. |
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming artwork equals a bundle
Anniversary graphics communicate the theme, not the contents. Check the written list for a game title or code.
Confusing a retailer bundle with Nintendo’s package
A store can combine a console with a separately sold game. If the game appears as an added item, treat it as a retailer promotion and verify its expiration date, format, and return terms.

Buying the wrong Zelda version
The Switch 2 Editions of Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild are distinct products from the original Switch releases. Confirm the platform label and understand whether you are buying a full game or an upgrade pack.
Overlooking membership eligibility
The Breath of the Wild benefit described by Nintendo applies to eligible active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members and certain content. It is not a universal free copy for every console owner.
Treating “currently unavailable” as a final status
The U.S. page showed that message on October 13, 2026, but inventory can change. Recheck the official page or an authorized retailer close to the October 29 scheduled availability date.
Bottom line for buyers
The Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition is a Zelda-themed console package with green-and-gold Joy-Con 2 controllers and matching hardware accessories. Nintendo’s published contents do not include a Zelda game. Budget for a separate Zelda purchase, and verify the exact game edition, format, region, release timing, and any membership requirement before ordering.
