The original Nintendo Switch has no conventional built-in camera for photos, ordinary video, or video calls. The standard Switch and Switch OLED do include an infrared (IR) Motion Camera in the underside of the right Joy-Con. Switch Lite does not support that sensor, while Nintendo Switch 2 uses a separate USB-C camera accessory for video chat and camera-enabled games.
Does the original Switch console have a camera?
The Switch tablet itself has no front-facing or rear-facing camera. Nintendo’s technical specifications list the console’s motion and brightness sensors, while the camera appears under the right Joy-Con’s features: Nintendo’s Switch technical specifications.
That means you cannot point the display unit at yourself or a room to take photographs, record real-world video, or make a webcam-style call. The sensor people sometimes call “the Switch camera” is mounted on a detachable controller instead.
What is the IR Motion Camera?
The IR Motion Camera is an infrared sensor on the bottom of the right Joy-Con. Turn that controller over and look near its lower end—the camera faces outward toward objects during compatible play. Nintendo describes it as a feature for new gameplay experiences, not as a general-purpose camera: Nintendo’s Switch system page.

It detects infrared information and can recognize shapes or objects for supported software. It does not produce normal visible-light photographs and is not a phone camera, webcam, night-vision camera, or general 3D scanner. Its behavior depends on the game or accessory using it.
Which Switch models have camera functionality?
| Model | Conventional built-in camera | IR or external-camera support |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | No | Yes—the IR Motion Camera is in the right Joy-Con |
| Nintendo Switch OLED Model | No | Yes—the IR Motion Camera is in the right Joy-Con |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | No | No IR Motion Camera functionality, according to Nintendo Support |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | No built-in conventional camera | Supports the separate USB-C Nintendo Switch 2 Camera |
On a standard Switch or OLED, the console cannot provide the IR sensor by itself: you need a functioning original right Joy-Con. Buying Joy-Con does not add this capability to a Switch Lite.
What can the IR camera actually do?
The sensor is used by compatible games and accessories, most notably Nintendo Labo experiences. Nintendo’s support documentation describes a test in which the Switch display can show the outline of an object, such as a hand, when the right Joy-Con is aimed at it: Nintendo’s IR Motion Camera support guide.

Can a Switch take pictures, record video, or make video calls?
Photos and real-world video
No. The original Switch family has no ordinary camera hardware for photographing people, rooms, or objects. The IR Motion Camera is not a replacement for a phone or action camera.

The Capture Button records screenshots and, in compatible games, clips of gameplay. Those files are stored in the Album; they are captures of the game display, not footage from a real-world camera: Nintendo’s system feature overview.
Video chat
The original Switch is not designed to work as a webcam or video-call device. Use a phone, tablet, or computer for video chat unless you move to Nintendo Switch 2 and its supported camera accessory.

How Switch 2 handles cameras
Nintendo Switch 2 still does not have a conventional camera built into the console. Instead, Nintendo sells a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Camera, released June 5, 2025. It connects to the USB-C port on top of Switch 2 and is intended for video chat and other in-game camera features: Nintendo Switch 2 Camera.
Nintendo lists a wide-angle lens, adjustable placement and angle, automatic brightness adjustment, face detection, a privacy shutter, and an included USB-C charging cable. Nintendo describes this accessory for Switch 2; do not assume it is an upgrade for an original Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite, and do not assume a generic USB webcam will work on those systems.

What should you buy for a camera-related use case?
- Ordinary photos, recording, or webcam use: Use a phone, tablet, or computer. An original Switch accessory does not turn the console into a general camera.
- Nintendo Labo or IR-enabled play: Use a standard Switch or Switch OLED with the correct right Joy-Con and compatible Labo software.
- Switch Lite owner seeking IR features: A separate camera is not a solution because Lite does not support IR Motion Camera functionality.
- Nintendo video chat or camera-enabled games: Consider Switch 2 with the official Nintendo Switch 2 Camera.
- Missing or damaged right Joy-Con: A replacement original right Joy-Con can restore IR-camera access on a standard Switch or OLED, provided the software supports it.
