Yes—if you want one low-power device to play Plex on your TV and optionally host a modest Plex Media Server. NVIDIA documents both roles, along with support for USB and network media storage. The main trade-offs are limited built-in storage, the space and processing demands of transcoding, and audio or video compatibility that depends on the rest of your home-theater chain.
What the Shield TV Pro can do for Plex
The Shield TV Pro can be the Plex client that connects to a server elsewhere, or it can host Plex Media Server itself. NVIDIA says both Plex components are pre-installed and describes the device as supporting real-time hardware A/V transcoding. Its user guide calls it a low-power server device; that is NVIDIA’s product description, not an independent performance test. NVIDIA’s product specifications list typical consumption of 5–10 W.
If a PC or NAS already runs Plex Media Server, the Shield can simply serve as the TV-side player. If it hosts the server, media can come from the device, a USB drive, or network-accessible storage. The right arrangement depends on where your library lives and whether your playback devices can Direct Play its files rather than requiring server-side conversion. NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV Pro User Guide describes both Plex roles and storage options.
Storage: plan for the library and server data
The current NVIDIA specification lists 16 GB of internal storage, with some of that occupied by system software, and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports. That capacity is not a practical home for a substantial video library. USB or network storage is the more suitable option for media collections. NVIDIA’s specifications list USB expansion and Gigabit Ethernet.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
USB drives: removable or adopted
Plex recommends using removable storage for content. A removable drive can remain available to Plex and other apps. If you instead adopt a drive as internal storage, SHIELD formats it and dedicates it to the device. Plex also says writes to removable media are limited to an NVIDIA_SHIELD folder; that does not move the Plex Media Server data directory. See Plex’s SHIELD storage guidance before choosing a format.
Network shares
Plex documents mounting SMB shares from a NAS, router-attached drive, or computer through SHIELD’s Network Storage settings. Plex says SHIELD needs Plex Media Server updated through the Google Play Store for SMB support. Its support material also notes that SMB opportunistic locking on mounted shares has been associated with delayed playback starts or DVR playback failures until scheduled analysis. Treat that as a possible troubleshooting factor, not a guarantee that a share will misbehave. Details are in Plex’s network-storage guidance.

Direct Play and transcoding change the server workload
Playback and transcoding are different jobs. When a Plex client can play a file as stored, the server avoids converting it for that stream. When a client or connection requires a different format or quality, the server may need to transcode. NVIDIA lists real-time hardware A/V transcoding, but that specification alone does not establish how a particular library, client mix, or number of simultaneous streams will perform.
Transcoding also needs working space. NVIDIA support guidance estimates that transcoding a full-length HD movie can require around 4–5 GB of free space on average, roughly comparable to the source file. This is an estimate, not a fixed requirement for every file or transcode. Plex’s guidance is to leave adequate free storage; see Plex’s transcoder documentation.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For a library that your usual clients Direct Play, the Shield may have a simpler server workload than one that routinely needs conversion. No fixed maximum stream count is established by the official material cited here, so don’t use a generic stream number to plan capacity.
Check your audio and video chain before relying on passthrough
NVIDIA lists 4K HDR HEVC playback up to 60 FPS and support for containers including MKV, MOV, M2TS, MPEG-TS, and MP4. Its specifications list Dolby Vision and HDR10 features, as well as HDMI audio passthrough formats including Dolby TrueHD and DTS formats. A listed format does not guarantee that every file will play as intended: the Plex client, file, HDMI route, TV, receiver, and soundbar all matter. NVIDIA’s specifications provide the device-level format list.

NVIDIA recommends connecting SHIELD to an AVR and then to the TV when the receiver supports the display formats you need. If an older receiver or soundbar cannot pass 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision, the guide describes alternate routing and settings. Confirm that each device in the chain supports the desired video mode, that the chosen TV input supports HDCP 2.2 where required, and that the receiver or TV can decode the audio formats you use. NVIDIA warns that an incapable receiver or TV may produce no audio. Consult the connection options in the NVIDIA user guide.

What the specifications do—and do not—settle
NVIDIA’s current product page lists Android 11, but that specification is not a software-support timetable or evidence that this is the newest available software. The available official specifications also do not establish current street value, inventory, performance under a particular library load, or a head-to-head ranking against current alternatives. Buy or keep it on the strength of the specific Plex, storage, and home-theater requirements above—not an unsupported claim that it is the best or cheapest current player.
