What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. PlayStation 2 supports multiplayer, but the options depend on the game: some titles allow local play with multiple controllers, and network-compatible games supported online play. For local games with more than two players, you may need a compatible PS2 multitap; check the game’s requirements and your console model first.
How does local PS2 multiplayer work?
Local multiplayer uses the controllers and accessories supported by the particular game. Player counts and controller requirements vary by title, so check the game’s packaging or instructions rather than assuming that every PS2 game supports multiplayer.
Some games support more than two local players through a multitap. Sony lists PS2 multitap models SCPH-70120 and SCPH-10090, but compatibility varies by PS2 console series. Confirm that the accessory matches your exact console model and game before buying. Sony’s PS2 accessory compatibility chart also distinguishes PlayStation-format accessories; do not assume every multitap works with every PS2 game.
Could you play PS2 games online?
Yes, compatible PS2 games supported online play. Requirements depended on the console revision and the game. For example, Sony’s guide for models SCPH-90002 and SCPH-90003 calls for a network-compatible game, broadband internet, an Ethernet cable, and a PS2 8MB memory card. It says dial-up and ISDN connections are not supported. The SCPH-90002/90003 guide describes connecting through the console’s network port.

Sony’s PlayStation history timeline dates PS2 online gaming’s arrival, alongside the network adapter, to 2001. Sony says the last official PS2 server, for Final Fantasy XI, remained active until 2016. That is a historical endpoint for official service, not confirmation that every PS2 online game is playable today.

Official PS2 online service is historical. Some games may have unofficial community services, but availability is game-specific; the official history timeline does not provide a current, comprehensive list of those services. Check the status of the particular game and service you want to use before planning an online session.

Setup also varies by console model. Sony’s SCPH-90004 guide describes using a compatible game, broadband, Ethernet, a memory card, and a network configuration created according to the game’s instructions. These model-specific instructions should not be treated as proof that every PS2 revision has identical networking hardware or setup.

What to check before playing with friends
- Check the game’s mode and player count. Confirm whether it supports local multiplayer, online play, or both, and how many players it allows.
- For local play, check the controller setup. Find out whether the game needs a multitap for the number of players you want.
- Match accessories to the console. Verify the multitap’s compatibility with your exact PS2 model using Sony’s accessory chart.
- For online play, check the connection and server. Confirm the game’s model-specific setup requirements and whether a server—official or community-run—is currently available.
