Yes, according to Sony’s estimate—but not necessarily while you are playing. In October 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment estimated that PS5 energy use would be around 11–17% lower than the PS4 launch model overall. Sony also said PS5 games typically require more power than PS4 games, so the estimate reflects a balance across different uses and power modes—not a promise that every PS5 game session uses less electricity. What Sony’s 11–17% estimate means
Sony’s comparison was an estimate of overall energy use for PS5 versus the PS4 launch model from 2013. It was not a measurement of every console, game, or household’s electricity use. Sony said the PS5’s lower demand in some modes helped offset the fact that PS5 games typically require more power than PS4 games.
That distinction matters because power draw is not the same thing as energy use. Power is the rate at which a console uses electricity at a given moment; energy accumulates over time. A higher-draw gaming session may use more electricity than a low-power mode, while hours spent in different modes affect the total. Your electricity source also affects the associated emissions.
Sony’s 2021 article also estimated that each million consoles sold would avoid around 46,000 tons of carbon-equivalent emissions annually. It estimated 6.2 TWh of avoided electricity over five years for PS5 consoles sold between November 2020 and August 2021, comparing that amount with the average annual electricity use of around 1.7 million UK homes. These are Sony’s company-published estimates, not independent measurements or guaranteed savings for an individual owner. Sony’s explanation and estimates

How much power does the PS5 use in Rest Mode?
Sony’s current environmental page says the PS5 at launch uses under 0.5 W in Rest Mode when no other features are enabled, compared with 1.8 W for PS4. The qualification is important: Rest Mode draw can change when network connectivity, USB power, or other features are enabled. These figures describe a specified low-power condition, not the console’s draw in every Rest Mode setup. Sony’s environmental policy
Sony’s earlier 2020 announcement described a suspend-and-resume capability estimated at 0.5 W, around 72% less than PS4. That figure refers to the stated capability and condition; it should not be treated as a universal reading for a PS5 left in Rest Mode with features active. Sony’s 2020 announcement

Does PS5 Power Saver reduce performance?
Yes. Sony says Power Saver scales back performance in supported PS5 and PS5 Pro games. In its August 2026 update, the company said the feature can reduce console power consumption by up to 50% when enabled. “Up to” is a maximum, not a guaranteed saving across all games or sessions; the feature applies to supported titles. How to reduce your PS5’s electricity use
- Use Power Saver where it is supported: Enable it for a supported game if you are willing to trade some performance for lower power consumption. Sony does not promise the maximum reduction in every title.
- Review Rest Mode features: Check whether settings such as network connectivity or USB power are needed while the console is resting. Sony’s under-0.5 W comparison applies only with other features disabled.
- Consider when peripherals charge: On supported slimmer PS5 and PS5 Pro models, Adaptive Charging adjusts peripheral charging according to remaining battery charge so the console can enter a lower-power Rest Mode after charging finishes.
What Adaptive Charging changes
Sony’s 2025 Road to Zero update reports 0.3–1 W after accessory charging is complete with Adaptive Charging, compared with 2.6–3.1 W otherwise, describing a reduction of up to 80%. These figures apply to the after-charging condition and the slimmer PS5 and PS5 Pro models identified by Sony; they are not a general reading for every PS5. Sony’s FY24 progress update

Adaptive Charging does not mean that a console uses that lower amount throughout charging. The stated comparison is for after charging finishes, when the feature allows the console to move into a lower-power Rest Mode.

Sony presents console efficiency as one contribution to broader environmental work. The company describes a Sony Group target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of FY2040, using FY2018 as the baseline, and says the target was approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. That is a company-wide target; it does not establish that owning or using a PS5 is carbon-neutral. Sony’s environmental policy
