The available Diaspora announcement evidence supports the second model. It describes the tree alongside other selectable identities, including animal and plant options. Nothing in that description establishes an account-wide unlock, and no cited material reports a hidden achievement, quest, level or permanent progression flag.

What Diaspora announces about the tree
It is a Mutated Plant starting stock
Diaspora is described as adding selectable Mutated Animal and Mutated Plant starting genotypes. The tree belongs to the plant side of that selection. In practical terms, the player is expected to choose the plant stock while creating a new character, before starting a run.
The official Steam description reproduced in coverage lists possible identities in the form “a dog, cat, frog, chameleon, vine, tree, etc.” That wording places the tree in the same broad category as the other advertised starts rather than presenting it as a late-game transformation.
It is not described as a later mutation
A mutation acquired after character creation would be a different mechanic from selecting a starting genotype. The announcement evidence does not say that a normal character must discover, research or trigger a special mutation to become a sapient tree. The tree is instead framed as an identity available at the beginning of a run.

The purchase gate is the important gate
Diaspora is paid downloadable content that requires the Caves of Qud base game. That product requirement is the access condition established by the announcement. It is separate from progression: owning the required products lets the game expose the expansion’s added starting options, while completing activities inside a run is not listed as a prerequisite.
How to start as the tree
These steps follow the announced access model. Exact menu wording can change during Early Access, so treat “Mutated Plant” as the key term rather than expecting a final, fixed label.
- Own the base game. A copy of Caves of Qud is required because Diaspora is expansion content, not a standalone game.
- Install or otherwise obtain Diaspora. The tree option is tied to the expansion’s Mutated Plant content. Without the DLC, the base game alone is not documented as providing this announced tree stock.
- Use a build that contains the feature. The announced Early Access date is December 9, 2026. If you are checking before that date, the option may simply not be released yet; after launch, an outdated or incomplete installation can also hide newly added content.
- Create a new character. Look in the character-creation choices for the Mutated Plant category or an equivalent plant-stock selection.
- Select the tree identity. Choose the tree entry rather than treating it as a reward to claim later. The announcement presents this as a starting choice.
- Begin the run. There is no published instruction to complete a separate tutorial, quest or achievement before the tree can be used.
The evidence does not establish a specific button sequence, a required difficulty, a save-file condition or a one-time confirmation screen. Those details should not be inferred from the word “unlock.”

Before December 9, 2026
Diaspora is announced for Steam Early Access on December 9, 2026. Before that release, a player cannot use the announcement alone as proof that the tree is already selectable in a live build. A store description can establish intended content without making that content available ahead of its release date.
During Early Access
Early Access means the implementation can change while the expansion is developed. The announcement expects development to continue through 2027. The tree could receive balance changes, a different menu location, revised terminology or altered interactions in later builds. Those possibilities do not create a current progression requirement; they mean that the announced access rule should be checked against the version you are actually running.
After future updates
No published source in the available material documents a later one-time achievement that permanently unlocks the tree for every account. If a future patch introduces such a system, that would be a new rule and should be stated in that patch’s notes or updated game documentation. It cannot be assumed from the current announcement.

Use the following checks in order. They address access and version problems without assuming an undocumented unlock mechanic.

- Check the date and release status. If you are playing before December 9, 2026, Diaspora’s announced content may not yet be available.
- Verify both products. Confirm that the account owns the base game and the Diaspora expansion. The expansion is not described as a standalone product.
- Confirm installation and updates. An installed base game without the DLC, or a client that has not downloaded the current build, may not show expansion character stocks.
- Start a genuinely new character. The tree is described as a creation-time option. It should not be expected to appear as a retroactive choice inside an existing run.
- Look for the plant category. Search for Mutated Plant or equivalent plant-stock wording rather than a separate “unlock” screen.
- Check current documentation if the option still does not appear. Because development continues through 2027, a patch may have renamed, moved or temporarily changed the feature. Use notes for your installed version rather than relying on an older description.
If all product and version checks pass and the option is still absent, the available announcement does not provide enough information to identify a hidden prerequisite. It is more accurate to report a version or implementation discrepancy than to claim that a secret achievement is required.

How to interpret “sapient tree” in this context
The phrase describes a playable tree identity, not necessarily a standard character who later receives a cosmetic tree form. Diaspora’s advertised list places “tree” with other playable animal and plant identities, while the Mutated Plant label explains the category used for character creation. That distinction matters when searching menus, reading patch notes or comparing saves: the relevant choice is the starting stock selected before the run begins.
It also explains why the question has a simple answer despite the word “permanent.” A player may use the tree in one run and choose another stock in the next; nothing in the announcement says that selecting it once permanently changes the account. The durable requirement is ownership of the expansion, not completion of a character-specific objective.
What could change without contradicting the current answer
A future Early Access build could reorganize the creation flow, rename Mutated Plant, add a confirmation step, rebalance the tree or change which modes support it. Any of those would alter the practical instructions while leaving the current announcement’s central description intact. A genuinely new progression requirement would be different: it would need to be introduced explicitly in later documentation, because no such requirement is present in the available announcement.
For now, the safest way to evaluate a missing tree option is therefore chronological: first verify that the expansion has released for your platform and that your installation is current; then verify ownership; finally inspect new-character creation for the plant stock. Do not spend time grinding levels or hunting achievements unless a later version’s own notes specifically add that rule.
