Every Steam Deck model listed in Valve’s specifications has a high-speed microSD card slot, so you can add storage without opening the console. Valve supports UHS-I microSD cards rated Class 3 or better. For a larger internal upgrade, the SSD can also be replaced, but that requires opening the Deck.
How to expand Steam Deck storage with a microSD card
A microSD card is the simplest and most reversible way to add room for games. Valve’s technical specifications list a high-speed microSD slot across the Steam Deck models shown and specify UHS-I support for SD, SDXC and SDHC cards.
Choose a compatible card
Valve says any UHS-I microSD card rated Class 3 or better is supported, according to Steam Support. A UHS-I U3 microSDXC card is a suitable choice for adding game storage. A faster UHS-II or UHS-III card will work at the Deck’s supported UHS-I bus speed; it will not deliver the higher bus speeds those standards can provide in compatible devices.
Valve’s launch-era user booklet describes the option of adding up to 2 TB through a microSD card. Treat that as Valve’s published capacity guidance, not a separately tested maximum. The hardware specification confirms SD, SDXC and SDHC support.

Format the card in SteamOS
Back up any files you want to keep before formatting: the process erases the card. Valve’s instructions are:
- Insert the microSD card into the slot on the bottom of the Steam Deck.
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card.
- Confirm formatting, then wait for SteamOS to prepare the card for use.
After formatting, the card is available as storage for installing games. The menu path is from Valve Steam Support.

MicroSD card or internal SSD replacement?
Both add capacity, but they differ in effort, portability and risk. A microSD card is easy to install and remove; replacing the SSD means opening the chassis and handling internal components.
| Factor | microSD expansion | Internal SSD replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Insert the card and format it in SteamOS. | Requires opening the Deck and following a model-specific repair guide. |
| Cost | Depends on the card; no fixed price is established here. | Depends on the replacement SSD and tools; no fixed price is established here. |
| Portability | Removable and easy to move between compatible devices. | Installed internally; moving it requires opening the Deck again. |
| Game-load performance | Uses the Deck’s UHS-I microSD interface; performance varies by card and game. | Uses internal SSD storage; performance depends on the replacement drive. No comparative benchmark is stated here. |
| Risk and effort | Low: no chassis opening is needed. | Higher: opening the chassis and careful handling are required. |
Can you upgrade the Steam Deck SSD?
Yes. iFixit provides separate replacement guides for the LCD model and the OLED model. The guides are model-specific, so use the one that matches your Deck and follow its complete instructions rather than treating the swap as a simple plug-in upgrade.

Remove any microSD card before opening the device; leaving one inserted can damage it during disassembly. An SSD replacement also requires tools and careful handling. You may need to repair or re-image SteamOS afterward; the OLED guide points to Valve’s recovery instructions.
