If Enshrouded runs slowly, first find out whether you have consistently low FPS, uneven frame times, or multiplayer lag: each points to a different cause. Check your PC against the game’s requirements, let shaders finish after an update, then change one setting at a time in a repeatable test location. Lowering every option at once can make the game look worse without fixing a CPU, network, or patch-related problem.
Identify what feels wrong
- Low FPS: The frame rate stays low even while standing still. This often points to a rendering limit, though CPU or simulation load can also hold FPS down.
- Stuttering: The average FPS may be high, but individual frames arrive unevenly. A frame-time graph can reveal spikes that an average-FPS counter hides.
- Network or server lag: If the camera moves smoothly but players or enemies snap position, actions arrive late, or movement rubber-bands, lowering graphics quality is unlikely to help.
Test in the same place after each change—for example, the affected base, a Shroud area, or a repeatable combat encounter. Record the game version and whether you are in single-player, hosting, or joining a multiplayer session.
Try these safe checks first
- Close Enshrouded and restart the PC.
- In Steam, let the game update fully. Install a current stable driver for your GPU. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, test a clean driver installation or a previously stable version rather than assuming newer is always better.
- After a major game or driver update, launch the game and allow shader compilation to finish before judging performance. Restart the game once it completes.
- Temporarily disable Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Nvidia or AMD recording overlays, Xbox Game Bar, and other performance overlays. Close recording software and other demanding applications, then retest.
- Change one graphics or display setting at a time. Use the same location and camera movement for each test so you can tell whether the change helped.
These are diagnostic steps, not a guaranteed fix. Keen Games has addressed frame-rate stutters, shader compilation, network stutter, and GPU-specific graphics issues in past updates, so performance can vary by game build and driver. Check the Hotfix #6 notes, Patch #7 notes, and later Hotfix #36 and Hotfix #41 notes for examples of game-specific fixes. These historical changes do not establish what is in the latest build; check the game’s current version and recent announcements.
Check whether your PC meets the published requirements
The following are the requirements published by Keen Games and Steam. Treat listed processors and GPUs as performance classes, not interchangeable guarantees; meeting the minimum does not promise a particular FPS, especially in complex scenes.

| Tier | CPU | GPU | Memory | Storage and OS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X | GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB, Radeon RX 580 6 GB; Steam also lists Intel Arc A380 | 16 GB RAM | Windows 10 64-bit; 60 GB storage |
| Recommended | Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X | GeForce RTX 2070 Super, Radeon RX 6700 XT; Steam also lists Intel Arc A770 | 16 GB RAM | SSD recommended by Steam |
See Keen Games’ system requirements and the Steam listing; recheck the listing after major releases. Keen says optimization is ongoing during Early Access. A system near minimum may need a lower resolution and reduced detail in demanding areas. An SSD can help loading and asset-streaming pauses, but does not by itself fix GPU- or CPU-limited FPS.
Find the bottleneck before lowering everything
Use a monitoring overlay briefly if you have one, then disable it again if overlays are among the suspected causes. Watch GPU utilization, CPU activity, VRAM and system memory use, temperatures, and frame time while reproducing the problem.
- Likely GPU limit: GPU usage stays near full and lowering resolution or resolution scale noticeably raises FPS. Lighting-heavy scenes, fog, reflections, shadows, and effects may make it worse.
- Likely CPU or simulation limit: GPU use remains well below full, lowering resolution barely changes FPS, and performance falls in a large base, crowded area, or multiplayer session. Check for CPU thermal or clock-speed throttling as well.
- Possible memory or streaming pressure: Hitches cluster around entering new areas, VRAM or system RAM approaches capacity, or reducing texture quality changes the pauses. Close browsers and recording tools; install the game on an SSD if possible.
These signs are clues, not definitive diagnoses. In particular, overall CPU utilization can hide one heavily loaded thread, and a busy GPU does not rule out other limits.

Set a baseline graphics profile
Use this as a troubleshooting starting point, not a universal best preset. The exact available labels can vary by game build and hardware.
- Display mode: Start with Fullscreen; compare Borderless if problems persist.
- Resolution scale: Start at 100% to make the baseline easy to interpret.
- V-Sync: Turn in-game V-Sync off while diagnosing frame pacing.
- Frame rate: Try a cap the PC can sustain consistently, such as 60, 90, or 120 FPS, rather than automatically matching the monitor’s maximum.
- Upscaling: Test DLSS, FSR, or the available native option one at a time.
- Shadows and effects: Reduce shadows first; then test contact shadows, SSAO, volumetric shadow and fog quality, reflections, and point-light shadows.
- Detail: Test voxel/detail and distant-object settings in complex bases or visually busy areas. Reduce foliage or tessellation if outdoor scenes are the main problem.
- Textures: Keep texture quality higher if VRAM is not close to capacity. Lower it one step if memory pressure or streaming hitches are evident.
Community players have suggested voxel-related settings, shadows, overlays, V-Sync, and upscaler choice as variables, but these reports are not controlled benchmarks. Treat them as test candidates, not guaranteed fixes; see the Steam Community discussion and player performance discussion.
If the GPU is the limit
- Test an upscaler at Quality, then Balanced if needed. Compare both FPS and image quality.
- Lower shadows, volumetric effects, fog, reflections, and point-light shadows, then retest the same scene.
- If GPU use remains near full, reduce resolution scale as a further test.
Upscaling lowers the resolution the game renders, so it can help a GPU-bound system; it cannot remove a CPU or simulation bottleneck. Aggressive upscaling may look soft, shimmer, or ghost, particularly at 1080p. Keep textures higher if VRAM is sufficient, since lighting and shadow options are often more useful first tests for a GPU limit.

If performance drops in bases or busy areas
A large, heavily decorated or brightly lit base can expose CPU, rendering, and asset-streaming limits that are less visible in a fresh world. Compare the affected base with a new world, an outdoor location, and—if relevant—a multiplayer session. If only the base suffers, test voxel/detail, distant objects, shadows, foliage, and point-light shadows before putting every setting on its lowest value.
- Close background applications and check CPU temperatures and clock speeds for throttling.
- Compare single-player with hosting or joining multiplayer. Note whether other players see the same delay.
- If lowering resolution barely helps, prioritize detail and distance settings rather than continuing to lower resolution.
- If hitches cluster around area transitions and memory use is high, lower texture quality one step and check whether the game is on an SSD.
A base-specific drop suggests a scene or simulation load, but does not prove the world is corrupted or that rebuilding is necessary. Establish which comparison changes the symptom before taking disruptive action.
Handle shader compilation after updates
Shader work can make the first launch after a game or driver update take longer or hitch during play. Keen’s November 2024 update notes describe moving VFX shader compilation to startup on Steam Deck. In Hotfix #29, dated August 25, 2025, the developers acknowledged unusually long VFX shader compilation times. Hotfix #41, dated May 11, 2026, warned that compilation could take longer after changes affecting many VFX files. These notes document past behavior, not a diagnosis for every hitch.

- After a major update, let the title-screen shader process complete; avoid repeatedly cancelling and relaunching it.
- Restart once compilation finishes, then retest the same location.
- If compilation appears stuck indefinitely, verify the game files using the steps below.
Clearing shader caches is a last-resort diagnostic, not a routine first step. It can force shaders to rebuild and make startup or gameplay temporarily worse. If you try it, use the relevant GPU or Steam guidance for your system and allow the next compilation to finish.
Test V-Sync, frame caps, and variable refresh
V-Sync can improve tearing for some setups and worsen pacing for others; there is no universal setting for every PC. For a controlled test, turn off in-game V-Sync, disable overlays and recording, then apply a stable cap through the GPU driver or a trusted limiter. Set it below the monitor’s refresh rate—for example, around 58–60 FPS on a 60-Hz display—or choose another rate the PC can actually sustain. If you use G-Sync or FreeSync and the issue is unusual or began after a driver change, compare behavior with the feature enabled and disabled. Keep the setup with steadier frame times, not just the highest peak FPS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use DLSS, FSR, and frame generation carefully
Results depend on GPU, resolution, driver, game build, and image-quality preference. Test DLSS and FSR separately if both are available; do not assume one is always better. Frame generation can raise the displayed FPS counter, but it does not increase native rendered frames in the same way and does not fix CPU or simulation limits. Avoid it when underlying FPS is already very low. Third-party frame-generation tools are optional experiments: possible drawbacks include added latency, ghosting, UI artifacts, and uneven pacing. Player reports about tools such as Lossless Scaling are anecdotal; see this frame-generation discussion.

Verify Steam files and reset settings safely
Verify the installation
- Open Steam Library and right-click Enshrouded.
- Choose Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- When verification finishes, relaunch and repeat your test.
This is a reasonable recovery step after an interrupted update, crash, or unexpected graphics behavior.
Reset graphics configuration only with a backup
Do not delete files based on a guessed configuration path. Record your graphics settings first. If you need to reset a configuration, back up saves, rename the relevant configuration file or folder rather than deleting it, launch the game to create a fresh configuration, and retest before restoring custom settings.
Keen Games lists local saves at %USERPROFILE%/Saved Games/enshrouded and Steam Cloud saves at userdata<SteamUserID>1203620remote. Back up saves before manipulating them; see Keen Games’ save-management instructions.
Tell rendering stutter from multiplayer lag
| What you observe | More likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Camera movement visibly hitches as local FPS falls | Rendering or frame-time problem |
| FPS stays high but players or enemies teleport | Network or server simulation delay |
| Everyone in a hosted session experiences delayed actions | Host, server simulation, or network issue |
| Only one player sees the problem | That player’s hardware, driver, or local software |
| The issue appears only in a dense base | Scene rendering or simulation load |
| The issue begins immediately after an update | Possible patch, shader, or driver interaction |
Keen addressed reports of laggy or stuttery network connections in Patch #7. That history is another reason to check symptoms before changing graphics settings: texture quality cannot repair network delay.
When to report the issue or consider another option
If a capable PC still has repeatable low FPS or stutter after these tests—especially if it began with a particular update—send Keen Games a reproducible report instead of assuming one more setting will solve it. Include the game version, GPU and driver version, whether the issue occurs in single-player or multiplayer, the location and steps that trigger it, and which tests changed the result.
- For a DxDiag report, press
Windows + R, enterdxdiag, press Enter, and select Save All Information…. - For the client log, use Steam Library → right-click Enshrouded → Manage → Browse local files. Include
enshrouded.logand thebackupfolder. - Attach the relevant save only if requested and after backing it up. Keen’s reporting instructions explain the requested files and save precautions: Reporting Bugs.
If your PC is below the target hardware and local settings are not enough, Enshrouded is listed as available on GeForce NOW in supported countries. Cloud play avoids local rendering demands but depends on service availability, connection quality, data-center location, and tolerance for latency and image compression; see the official FAQ. Consider a GPU upgrade only when testing shows a sustained GPU limit; an upgrade will not solve a CPU-bound base or server-simulation issue.
