If you need a break, putting the Switch to sleep may keep the session open, but that is community-reported advice, not a guaranteed save.
When can you save?
The Trial of the Sword has three sets: Beginning, Middle, and Final. A Gamer Guides walkthrough says saving is unavailable during an individual set and becomes possible after you reach its end. Finish the set before quitting if you want to preserve progress.
Do not assume that a room or rest area is a save point. The guide’s rule is that you cannot save partway through a trial; it does not establish room-by-room autosave behavior.
Can you pause and continue later?
Players report that putting the Switch to sleep may let them resume the live game session later. That is different from saving a checkpoint: it keeps the game suspended rather than recording progress you can reliably recover after closing the game. This is anecdotal community advice, not a behavior Nintendo confirms.

If you try sleep mode, avoid quitting the game or powering down the console. Do not count on returning to the same room if the session is interrupted.
What is the Trial of the Sword?
The challenge is included in The Master Trials DLC Pack 1 for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo describes it as a series of enemy encounters in which Link advances from room to room; its DLC listing does not explain the challenge’s save behavior.
