The September 29, 2026 release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered made some existing mods incompatible at launch—especially mods containing XML files, scripts or w3strings. CD PROJEKT RED said those mods would not work upon the update’s release, but noted that REDkit provides a way for creators to update them. Compatibility now depends on the individual mod, its latest version, the game build and your platform; it does not mean every mod is broken or has since been fixed.
What changed for mods in the Remastered update?
CD PROJEKT RED’s cross-platform mod support guide says: “Mods containing xml files, script files, or w3strings will not work upon the release of the update.” That statement describes compatibility at release, not the status of every mod today: authors may have updated individual mods since then.
The game’s Remastered release also introduced an in-game Mods menu with cross-platform mod support. It is not the same thing as every legacy PC mod or installation method. A mod’s compatibility still needs to be checked against the exact game version and platform you use. CD PROJEKT RED announced the Remastered release on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for eligible owners on the platforms listed in its release announcement.
How to check whether a mod is compatible
- Identify your setup. Note the platform and exact game version or build shown in the launcher or store. “Latest” is not precise enough if editions or platforms differ.
- Back up important saves. Keep a separate copy before changing a modded installation, and preserve the original files or configuration where possible.
- Check each mod’s own listing. Read its latest description, requirements, comments and release notes for explicit support for your installed build. Look for updates to XML, script or w3strings files, the file types CD PROJEKT RED identified as affected at release.
- Confirm platform support. For the official Mods menu, check the mod page for the “Available on consoles” tag; CD PROJEKT RED says unsupported console mods are ignored.
- Check dependencies and conflicts. Make sure required mods are installed and review the mod page for stated conflicts. Compatibility of one mod does not establish compatibility of its dependencies or other mods.
More than 450 mods had been newly released or updated since September 29, according to PC Gamer senior editor Wes Fenlon’s count in an October 1, 2026 report. That is a dated author count, not an official total or a guarantee that those mods work on every build or platform. See Fenlon’s report for its date and context.

How to troubleshoot a crash or other problem after updating
If the game starts failing after an update, isolate the mods before assuming the save or installation is irreparably damaged. This is a cautious troubleshooting approach, not a CD PROJEKT RED-published or tested Witcher-specific procedure.
- Disable or remove mods without a compatibility confirmation. Preserve your backup and change as little as possible at once.
- Launch the game and check whether the problem remains. If it does, the unconfirmed mods may not be the cause; if it stops, investigate the disabled mods.
- Re-enable confirmed mods in small groups. If the issue returns, narrow down that group, then check the relevant mod pages for dependencies or conflicts.
- If the issue persists after removing mods, contact the official platform support channel. Include your platform, game version, mod list and when the problem began. The cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed rollback, repair or reinstall procedure.
Using the official Mods menu
CD PROJEKT RED says the in-game Mods menu is powered by mod.io and is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Installing through it requires a CD PROJEKT RED account linked to mod.io. The publisher’s steps are:

- Open Mods from the game’s main menu.
- Log in to a CD PROJEKT RED account and link mod.io.
- Subscribe to the mods you want.
- Restart the game, then check that each mod appears and is checked under Installed.
Subscriptions sync across platforms, but a mod that is unsupported on a console is ignored there. CD PROJEKT RED also says a modded save can be accessed offline if its required mods are already installed; you cannot install new mods while offline. A save created with mods enabled is marked with a mod.io cog icon.
Cross-progression saves and achievements
For a cross-progression save, CD PROJEKT RED says the same set of mods must be enabled on both devices. If a mod is missing or incompatible on the destination platform, the save may not load correctly. Check that each mod supports the target platform before opening the save there.

On consoles, trophies and achievements are disabled when playing modded save files, according to the publisher’s support guide.

The REDkit changelog lists version 5.0.1042178, dated September 29, 2026. Its notes describe creator-facing features including Witcherscript scope-based overrides, which allow script mods to specify a scope and add or override functions at runtime, potentially reducing conflicts and the need for Script Merger in those cases. They also describe script blobs, which compile script mods into small blobs loaded at game start. These capabilities give creators ways to work with scripts; they do not automatically update every older mod.
